Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
who: IRVS AND ONE NICK.
where: IRVINGS' HOUSE.
when: DINDIN. YESTERDAY.

Cor was excited, she was thrilled. Her new best friend, college edition (!!), was coming over for dinner tonight. The only problem was, while her brother, Hamish, remained relatively unmoved, and her mom grew happier that her only daughter was bringing a boy home, her dad was 'not happy'. It was beyond Cor's understanding why. It was just Nick, her King Bee, her King of Sparkle, her BFF. Where was the harm? Apparently her mother knew. Cor went to help out in the kitchen to see why.

"Why is Poppa Elf all weird?" She asked as she barged through the doors. Her dad got really into the holiday season, wearing an elf hat on Christmas day. Cor took to calling him Poppa elf the year she saw the movie from which it came. Her mother had responded with a confusing, "You're father is having a hard time accepting you growing up." Still way over Cor's head. What the heck did best friends have to do with growing up? 'Absolutely a very little' is the answer you're looking for, thank you.

"What for?" She demanded. Her mom shook her head and told her, "Your dad just wants to keep you under his wing forever is all. You bringing a boy into the house is telling him it's time to let go." Of course, to Corinne, this still didn't make sense. "But he's just a friend, mom, it's not a big deal." To that, her Momma Irving just raised her eyebrows in a knowing manner. Cor made a face. If only her parents knew.

After that she vacated the kitchen and stationed herself on the sofa. While she waited for Nick to arrive and the meal to be finished, she tried to imagine her families reactions to her extraordinary friend. She giggled to herself visualizing her family, all neat and tidy and probably a little overdressed and then threw Nick in the picture, everything but subtle.

Dinner with the Irvings. Huh, imagine that. Nick felt privileged for one thing. What sort of amazing things about him must Corinne have told her parents? I mean, was it really her idea? Maybe she had told mom and dad about his UGG boot collection and they were like, oh snap, invite that kid over now, honey!

He was much too outgoing to be nervous about meeting someone's family anyway. Especially that of someone that he technically only knew for a few months. But from the first day they had met, Corinne and Nick were destined to be biffles. If he was any more of a girl, they'd probably be the same person - making up words, getting the scoop on scandalicious gossip, flailing around without any sense of direction or purpose. Plus, on that fateful first day? She had made a puppet out of the orientation pamphlet. How awesome was that!

He pouted at himself in his mirror as he expertly ran a flat iron through his hair one last time. Obviously it was a high-class flat iron too. Nick didn't mess around with that crap from Wal-Mart. The GHD MK4 (coincidentally known as "The Diva", and coming only in pink, both of which Nick strongly approved of) was as hot as a straightener could get, and used floating plate technology. Whatever the hell that meant. He just remembered reading it on the box as he (literally) skipped over to the cash register, dropping down three hundred dollars for it without a single regret.

And, hours of primping later, with just as much exuberance, he skipped up the porch steps to the Irvings' home. He rang the doorbell over and over intermittently. Not to be obnoxious though. In his own head, he was working on a remix here. "I'm still, I'm still, Jenny from the block..." he murmured to himself.

The doorbell started going nuts and right away Corinne knew it was Nick. She sprang from the couch and pounced on the door before her mom could even finish wiping her hands on her apron.

"I GOT IT MOM," she bellowed at the kitchen door. She yanked the front door open to greet her friend.

"Hi!" And with that, she promptly tackle/hugged him. Behind her, the rest of the Irvings were arranging themselves in a neat line to be introduced to Nick. Mr. Irving could be heard groaning in disapproval at her greeting.

"HEY, BABY GIRL!" Nick more or less shrieked at her because it was his first instinct. Also because she had just tackled him, and hard enough to remind him suddenly of getting knocked over during football. And secondly, he hadn't seen her for like, what, a week or more over the break? SEPARATION ANXIETY.

He got his arms around her in turn and whirled her around theatrically before noticing out of the corner of his eye that not only Corinne had come up to answer the door: about three other people did too. He cleared his throat and stopped spinning her, but still leaned on Cor heavily even though she was about half a foot shorter than he was.

"Hey y'all!" he said brightly, waving excitedly.

She shrieked and giggled happily, momentarily forgetting why he was here because she was just so darn HAPPY to see the King Bee! But then pout her down. Then she remembered. She turned to see her waiting family.

"Oh yeah! Mom, this is Nick Rawlinson, that's Poppa Elf-- I mean my dad, and that's my brohadre, Hamish." She gestured toward each person in turn. Her family gave Nick awkward waves. Corinne just kept beaming.

"Is dinner done yet?" As if on cue the timer went off. "That must be it," said her mother as she escaped to the kitchen. Cor turned to Nick. "We're having lasagna!" She clapped her hands because obviously lasagna was the best thing in the world. Food wise.

Nick only waved back possibly more excitedly than he had in the first place, looking slightly like he was trying to shoo an invisible fly in the process but oddly happy to do so. Not really sensing the whole awkward vibe going around, he matched Corinne's beaming, greeting the fam enthusiastically with a, "Hey mom! Hey poppa elf!"

"Ohmigaw, I am starving!" he remarked suddenly, as if he hadn't noticed until just then. Nevermind that he could probably wolf the whole dish of lasagna by himself even if he wasn't hungry. "Buuuuut, do you like my jacket? It's new. I'm wearin' it for the special occasion." He stuck his hands in the pockets, turning from side to side to let her notice all the details and pouting exaggeratedly. Dayuuum but it was a hot jacket. Even if he did get it out of the women's section.

'What the hell,' would probably be the best description of what Corinne's family was thinking. As her mom went back to the kitchen, her dad just gave another awkward wave. What a strange boy.

"Oh, Nick, that's so cute! And I'm honored that you'd wear it for us!" She rand her hands over it. "Oh and it feels good too! Let me take it!" She put her hands out expectantly, grin still firmly in place. It was a wonder her face wasn't splitting all around her head she was smiling so hard.

Nick nodded approvingly to all this admiration (of his fly style), not really giving a second to the fact that it kind of looked like Cor was molesting him. In front of her family. A second later he frowned.

"What? I can't wear it inside?" He peered beyond the door curiously.

Cor's jaw dropped. "What if you get food on it?! I will never forgive you for it," she practically shouted.

"By the way, I forgot to tell you, come in, it's cold outside."

"I'M A CAREFUL EATER!" Nick shouted back. Okay so technically that made him a liar. But no one needed to relive that terrible night he got ketchup all over his brand new Juicy Couture cardigan. A ridiculous amount of dry cleaning couldn't even save it. Technically it was still in the closet because he couldn't bear to throw it out, even if he wouldn't be caught dead wearing stained outwear.

He sniffed delicately, peeling his jacket off reluctantly and holding it out to her between pinched fingers as he hurried out of the dreaded cold. "Well, yeah, I kinda noticed. Fuckin' snow-" He stopped abruptly, ducking his head slightly as he looked around quickly, making sure none of her family was in earshot to hear him drop an 'f' bomb.

She took his coat and hung it in the closet right by the door. "Okay now let's eat!" She pulled him to the kitchen, choosing to ignore the naughty word because she's learned that if you don't react to things, her parents won't notice anything.

"Anyway," she began as she entered the room, "I really hope you like lasagna, 'cause me and my mom slaved over it." And by that she meant she briefly visited the kitchen throughout the day and held a dish while her mom labored away.

"Yeah, I sure do." Actually, Nick didn't really prefer lasagna over any other type of food. But food was food, and it's not like Nick ever passed anyone up on that kind of offer. He gave her a lop-sided grin as he drew one arm around her shoulders, ruffling her hair playfully and snickering at the strands sticking up every which way. "Awww, you're so sweet, hon."

And, remembering his manners, he glanced over at her mom and aimed that too wide grin at her as well. "Thanks, Momma Irv! Smells good up in here."

She smiled back and nudged him. They were just touchy-feely kids. But then her mom called her away to help set the table.

Once that was done she pulled out a chair and patted it eagerly. "Sit here, sit by me!" She quickly sat in the chair beside it. "OH WAIT!" She jumped up with a look of horror on her face. "I almost forgot to wash my hands!" She ran off to the bathroom.

Nick was in the process of walking over to the chair and froze in mid-step when Corinne leapt up and ran out of the room. He looked between his hands and everyone else, then back at his hands. Well, fuck, he thought, wrinkling his nose. When in Rome or whatever.

He smiled sheepishly and skipped over to the kitchen sink, giving his hands a quick scrub before finding his seat again.

She returned, looking winded, just as Nick was sitting down. "Sorry about that. Everything is good now." She sat down again and thrust her hands under Nick's nose. "Smell." She grinned. "It's my special soap."

Nick quirked his eyebrow at her, mouthing "WHAT THE FUCK?" right before she unceremoniously shoved her hands in his face. He spluttered in surprise for a second.

"Erm, 'kay," he chuckled as he gave her palm a quick sniff. "Oooh, pretty!"

She frowned when he spluttered. Did he not like it? But then he said the Honest to God Truth so she smiled again. "It zaps all the germs off, AND smells absolutely scrumptious!" The Irvings didn't seem phased by her actions for the most part. Hamish served the Lasagna and set what was left in the middle of the table for whoever wanted seconds.

"We're in agreeance then." Nick nodded resolutely, snatching up his fork like a spear before her brother even came to their side of the table. "Kinda like... Twizzlers and Juicy Fruit," he added as an afterthought, but he already had a faraway look on his face as he tucked in and started shoveling lasagna in his mouth.

"Yeah!" she agreed. "I've never been able to place it before!" She smelled her hands more and 'mmm'ed in satisfaction.

Then she dug into her food. Cor wasn't exactly a neat eater. With each bite, lasagna sauce layered thicker and thicker on her face until she had to eat directly over her plate to avoid dripping on her clothes. She paused. "Napkin?" She just realized she was missing one.

Nick, however, looked less like a zombie finishing off its prey. He occasionally remembered to chew, breathe, and dab his mouth with a napkin. Mostly for the sake of trying to get as much food in his mouth as possible and make the least amount of mess in front the Irvings. He was polite sometimes okay?

Until he took one look at her face. He ended up spitting a mouthful of thoroughly chewed up pasta all over the table cloth, cackling with laughter.
