 who :: samantha and freddy
what :: a chitchat
where :: the library
when :: recently

Samantha was standing on her tiptoes on top of the stool and still couldn't reach the book she needed. "My New Year's resolution should be to get taller," she grunted to herself as she stretched as far as she could, still failing to slide the book off the shelf. She looked around for any signs of spying eyes, and then scaled the shelf, climbing to the top and dropping the book she'd needed to the floor with a thud. After nearly slipping and falling to her certain demise, Samantha made it down from the shelf, no thanks to the awful stool and her short legs.

Of course, the book was useless in the long run.

It wasn't like he was following her. In fact, he hadn't even known that she was in here until much later, when he was staring at the works of Shakespeare below him and she at Yeats, one row over. It was her cough -- he could pick it out anywhere, though he swore he denied it before.

Freddy chuckled softly to himself when she reached for the book, staring at her from behind and then pretended he wasn't paying any attention, staring into his book, facing the other direction.

After a few moments, he decided that this charade was stupid. She probably noticed anyways. Sneaking up behind her, he covered her eyes with his hands. "Guess who?" he whispered in her ear.

Samantha hadn't, in fact, noticed. Libraries were her absolute favorite, and even though she had to read poetry (something that, while beautiful and meaningful, she found difficult to understand), she still loved searching through the many books, always mystified about how there could possibly be so many.

"Freddy," she grinned in reply, taking his hand off her eyes and turning to show him her smile. "If you've been here all this time and didn't help me get that book off the shelf, I will slaughter you."

Freddy grinned slyly but just shook his head, patting her head with a silly expression. "Did you see me?" he asked. "Because if you didn't see me, then no, I was not here."

"Always the existentialist," she commented, rolling her eyes and turning back to her book of poetry.

Freddy took the book from her hands and leafed through it, feigning interest. "Whatcha reeeeeading?" he asked in an annoying tone, not letting her have the book back.

"Bad poetry," she groaned, putting her face in her hands and sighing. "I can't it it. How's anyone supposed to make sense of it?"

He shrugged. "It's not that hard, you just have to find the meaning in it. There's a lot of metaphor and hidden meaning and things like that. You can't just say what you mean in poetry."

Samantha frowned. "Why not? Wouldn't it take less time to just say what you mean? All this dancing around the issues. It's like politics, only worse."

"Ah, that's the whole fun of it, though," he reasoned, smiling down at her. "Do people ever say what they mean? Or is everything just under the surface?"

She blinked up at him, wide-eyed and smiling. "Freddy, you're giving me a headache, stop it."

Freddy grinned, throwing his hands in the air in defeat. "Well, I don't make the rules, I just state them. Just saying. I mean, it's all very theoretical and stuff. What you think it means is what it means. You know?" He shook his head in mild disbelief. "You're right, it is giving me a headache."

"Maybe I'm just meant to fail this class," she sighed as she massaged her temples. "Why did I think I could take a poetry class? I never liked poetry."b

Samantha thought about this for a moment. Would it really be such a bad thing if she asked Freddy to help? Freddy Chopping, her ex-boyfriend? Things had been getting less awkward with him since she broke up with him, after all. It probably wouldn't be so bad, would it?

"All right, Freddy. Would you help me?"

He raised his eyes uninterestedly. "I don't know. What'll you give me for it?" Freddy asked skeptically, crossing his arms. Of course he was teasing, but he was going to keep up this charade for as long as he could.

Hadn't she already given him enough? she asked herself, but knew better than to ask out loud. She feigned deep thought until she came up with an answer.

"Bottle of wine?"

Samantha looked at Freddy for a moment, hesitating. She shook her head slightly, just enough to throw her worries out of her head, and she smiled back at him.

"Haikus are silly."

"Seven syllables? Okay, if I must," he sighed, watching her with an amused expression. "Ummm..."

"I do not care if... Samantha is a ho or not... because of your mom." Freddy winced. His poetry skills weren't so good, after all. "Uhhh your turn."

He wrinkled his nose. "Say it like S'mantha. So it's like two anyways. Okay I win."

"But I can help you analyze your poetry. That's a little different. I'm not a poet, but I'm good at interpreting things." Freddy shrugged. "It's what I do."

"Do not," she argued back.

Samantha sighed and pushed her hair out of her face. "I'm not sure I--" she shifted uncomfortably, remembering the context of each poem. "No, really. It's okay."

Samantha shifted again and fiddled with her hair.

"No, it's okay Freddy. All the poems, they're--" she took a quick glance at him then looked away. "They're a bit on the romantic side. I don't want to make things...uncomfortable."

During her hesitation, Samantha came to the conclusion that failing her poetry class just because she wanted to avoid Freddy wasn't exactly an intelligent decision. She straightened her back and nodded, gesturing to the seat next to her.

"All right. I could use your help," she conceded.
