What to Wear
Characters: Abernathy, Bobby, and Sunny
Setting: Out on the town, Wednesday after classes
Rating: Probably SFW, some language
Summary: Distraught over her nomination to homecoming court AB appeals to Sunny and Bobby for help finding something to wear to the dance.

Abernathy was more than a little flustered about her nomination to the homecoming court. She hadn't sussed out who had nominated her yet, but when she did they'd be dead. It wasn't so much that she didn't want to go, but dances were complicated things. Everyone would be looking at what she was wearing, who she came with. Normally Abernathy didn't care about things like that, but whatever had changed with her and Sam over the summer had changed her a bit as well.

She begged Sunny and Bobby to help her find something nice to wear. She figured Sunny would prevent her from showing up in overalls and Bobby would give her an honest, masculine opinion on the matter. She'd been through three dresses already, but this was only their first stop of the afternoon.

As much as Abernathy wanted to think that she could quickly find a dress and call it done, this was going to take a while.

Sunny was always quick to help a friend in need, but it always helped when the task was fun. They were only three dresses in, Sunny knew you could never find a good dress after only trying on three. She pawed through a rack near the changing room with no success and walked back over the door. "Any luck with this one?" she asked tentatively.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 02:46 am (UTC) (Link)
Bobby couldn't see what was wrong with the first three dresses. Or the dozen shoes AB and Sunny had tried on. Or the tiaras. Or the little handbags. But no, apparently there was something wrong about every item, be it the measurements or the precise shade. He was starting to wonder why he'd been dragged along.

He had started off leaning against the wall next to the changeroom, but after the first ten minutes had started to slump down the wall, and was now sitting on the floor. He could see AB's feet and ankles under the dressing room door, and as she kicked aside another dress he realized that were it not for the door, he'd be seeing her undressed. He blushed furiously, though all he could see were feet, and looked away back to Sunny. "Naw, it's on the floor too."

"Can we try another store?" Abby begged from inside the dressing room. She hated the idea of standing in a little box in her underwear while Bobby was just outside the door. He wasn't like a "real" boy to her, but he was still a boy and that made it weird.

All of the dresses so far had been too girly. She figured if she started off with something a little over the top she could ease into something more her speed, at least talk Sunny out of the bubble gum pink creation she'd just kicked off.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 03:07 am (UTC) (Link)
"Of course!" Sunny bounced right back into action, grabbing Bobby's hand and practically pulling him up from the ground. She knew that the first few selections were a bit too much for AB's style but it never hurt to try. She had to admit she found herself admiring Abby's courage to try on some of those dresses.

They met Abby on the other side of the door and walked to the next store together. Without thinking of the consequences Sunny rambled right along about the dance. "So are you guys going to the dance with anyone?"
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 03:10 am (UTC) (Link)
Bobby found the question odd. Sunny knew that neither of her friends were 'seeing' anyone, nor did either act outwardly inclined to doing so. "I was gonna walk up with Sam," he offered, deliberately misunderstanding the question. "Why? Did that scumbag ask you?" His face darkened. Anastas de Kooning was such a... scumbag. He didn't know why Sunny was so interested in him. And for that matter, why he was interested in her, beyond horribly corrupting her or something.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 03:15 am (UTC) (Link)
Abby was still wearing her vintage hippy throwback for spirit week. She couldn't be bothered to change into something else when she'd just be in and out of dresses for most of the afternoon.

When the conversation turned to the subject of dates AB cringed. "I don't know," she replied. "No one's asked."

Then she turned to Bobby. "You know Sunny, she likes a fixer-upper."
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 03:23 am (UTC) (Link)
Sunny instantly regretted asking. She just thought maybe her friends had found a friend to go with or maybe a group. "You and Sam," he said to Bobby. "Ultimate bromance."

Her face fell a little when he brought up Stas. It was her own fault though, she should have known better than to ask. A little shyly she nodded and did her best to hide behind Abby's comment about fixer-uppers. "He's not a scumbag," she said quietly. "He's just... oh look! Cute dresses!" she said pointing at a window display and turning into the closet store.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 03:26 am (UTC) (Link)
AB rolled her eyes at the ultimate bromance. For all she knew Sam and Bobby said "I love you" to each other before hanging up the phone.

"This is your fault." AB accused Bobby quietly as Sunny steered them into the cute dress store. "If I end up looking like a birthday cake I'm going to kill you."

She turned to Sunny with a little shrug. "How did that happen anyway? I kind of thought he was too big of a jerk to ask a girl to a dance."
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 03:31 am (UTC) (Link)
"How is it my fault! I shouldn't even be here, man, all I tried to do was stop you looking like a big fat lesbian from 1987. Not that you're fat. Or a lesbian." He clamped his mouth shut and regretted saying anything at all.

He snorted at AB's question to Sunny. "Because of the Homecoming 'tradition'," he muttered to nobody in particular.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 03:39 am (UTC) (Link)
Sunny turned on Bobby and glared at him when he rambled on to Abby about looking like a fat lesbian from 1987. Her look said one more word Robert Eisley and your head is on a platter.

Sunny shrugged and fussed over a few dresses. "He's not so bad," she said without looking at either of them directly. "I asked him to come to the homecoming game, you know, I just want all my friends there. And he suggested that we make a weekend of it and go to the dance together. Trust me, I was just as shocked," she explained. "Oh! Look at these!" she pulled two dresses off the rack and handed them over to Abby. "What tradition are you mumbling about over there Bobby?"
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 03:47 am (UTC) (Link)
Bobby turned a fluorescent shade of red; he didn't think Sunny actually heard that part. "You're a muggle, Abby, you know what I'm talking about, right? ... right?"
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 03:53 am (UTC) (Link)
"Uh... I think that's the prom night tradition," she replied nonchalantly. "Though I bet you there are a few backseat romances during homecoming too."

She perused the dresses Sunny picked out. "Not horrible," she replied. Clearly she had a different sense of style than Abernathy. "Maybe something with a little less sparkle?"
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 04:08 am (UTC) (Link)
Prom night tradition. Backseat romances? Oh. Oh fffffffff. To say Sunny was mortified when she connected the dots was an understatement. "BOBBY!" she smacked his arm perhaps a bit harder than she normally would when he made an offense. She turned a deep shade of crimson and got back to work on the dresses. "Not that it should matter but Anastas is not getting anywhere near my backseat," she said stubbornly.

"Less sparkle," Sunny nodded. She grabbed another dress, not to plain but not too loud and held it out. "It' a little dark, but maybe worth a go?"
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 06:17 am (UTC) (Link)
"Ooooww." Bobby rubbed his arm where she smacked him. He couldn't think that she hit hard 'even for a girl' because the facts were she hit hard even for Mike Tyson.

"Yes, that one's nice," he said of the latest dress, gameface on. It looked exactly the same as the last dress to him, although both Sunny and AB insisted that these things looked different on. "Try that one."
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 06:38 am (UTC) (Link)
"She's got junk in her trunk that she doesn't want him to touch," AB teased and made sure to stay out of Sunny's reach.

Holding the dress out at arm length she gave it a quick examination. "It's still sparkly," she replied with one eyebrow quirked. It was very pretty and kind of posh; AB hated to admit she almost liked it.

She shook her head when Bobby chimed in. "Oh fine."

Taking the dress into the changing room she shrugged out of her hippy couture and into the dress. She gulped loudly, staring into the mirror as if the thing were lying to her.

"Sunny," she called, her throat constricted in a mild panic. "Get in here. I need your help."
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 09:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sunny blushed and laughed. "Yeah, no touchy," she folded her arms across her chest. "It's a bit sparkly," she admitted. "But it will look nice with your skin tone."

She waited patiently for AB to change, poking at Bobby every so often, still a little sore about his assumption that Stasi only wanted to get in the backseat of her car. "I'm coming Abby," she left Bobby to his own devices to see to her friend.

She knocked on the door and pushed it open. Her eyes flew open. "Abby! Wow! That dress looks great!"
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 09:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
Bobby rolled his eyes as Sunny went into the changeroom so they could discuss whatever invisible flaw this dress had. One of the sales attendants smiled kindly at him from the rack she was rearranging.

"You're a very patient boyfriend," she said.

Bobby looked over his shoulder to the closed changeroom door. "Huh? Oh, I'm not her boyfriend."

"Oh..." She raised her eyebrows and left it at that.

"But I'm not the gay BFF either!" He added quickly. "Totally into girls."
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 09:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
Abby placed her hand on her chest as if it could stop her heart from beating so frantically. "I'm not supposed to look like this!" Her voice was more panicky than it was before and she was struggling to breathe.

She couldn't figure out why a simple dress was causing her to absolutely lose her shit. "I can't... There's no way I can go to this thing looking like this."
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 10:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Why not?" she asked looking worried. "You look amazing! You're supposed to look like that because you look like that," she placed a gentle hand on Abby's shoulder and smiled. "Just breathe," she said gently.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 10:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
"I don't look like this," AB replied. Her voice wasn't as constricted, but it didn't change the fact that she was in full on freak out mode.

She looked away from Sunny, back to staring at herself in the mirror. She was falling in love with this dress even as it was terrorizing her. "He can't see me like this," she squeaked.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 29th, 2010 10:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Him?" she asked. "Sam?" she covered her mouth quickly, realizing this was definitely a sensitive subject. "Bobby?" she tried to cover it up. "The figurative him?" she bit her lip and rushed ahead anyways. "Look, this dress is super cute and it does great things for you but if you're not comfortable then you shouldn't get it."

"I for one think you look stunning, but it's your call."
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 29th, 2010 11:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
"What? No." Abernathy fussed with the skirt a bit. It looked like it had a hard surface with all that black glitter, but it was actually quite soft. "Who?"

She shook her head. "Fuck. Sunny? Whoever. Boys can't see me like this. They don't think of me this way." Well, except the occasional ex-boyfriend. Sam can't think of me this way.

"What in the world would I even wear with this? Don't I need a mask? And some shoes. Oh god who nominated me? This is too much freaking pressure."
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 29th, 2010 11:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
"100% not gay." Bobby didn't even know why he was still talking at this point. Flustered, he turned back to the changerooms. "You guys cool in there?"
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 12:03 am (UTC) (Link)
"Yes Bobby, for the love of god get in here."

Then she realized she'd just called Bobby in to look at the dress. The dress that boys couldn't see her in. Even if it was just Bobby.

Fuck my life.

He shuffled into the tiny changeroom obediently. AB looked stressed out, and Sunny was looking at him expectantly.

"It's nice." He said dutifully. "I like the, uh... mosquito guard at the bottom? Very practical."
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 30th, 2010 12:25 am (UTC) (Link)
"Bobby! It's not a mosquito guard!" she slapped her own head and sighed. "How does the dress look?" she emphasized the word with big eyes. She knew Abby looked distressed but she pulled it off amazingly.

"We can get a dark pair of flats," she wasn't going to push her luck and try to get her in heels. "A mask should be easy enough to find in black," she shrugged, fussing with the shoulders.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 12:47 am (UTC) (Link)
"Mosquito guard, huh? I suppose I could wear it out fishing after the dance." AB giggled nervously. Even if Bobby's comment hadn't been particularly helpful it had eased some of the tension.

"I'm going to look like a gothic fantasy." She laughed a again, a little more ease working back into her muscles. She could breathe again.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 30th, 2010 12:54 am (UTC) (Link)
"It looks... black?" He responded defensively to Sunny, though a little unsure. He thought 'nice' was talking about how the dress looked. Clearly she meant something more specific. It was definitely black. Even he could see that. He nodded in agreement as Sunny continued. "All masks come in black. And it's the new... black." That was the extent of his fashion knowledge, that something was always 'the new black'. In this case, it just happened to be black as well. "You'll look..." Apparently 'nice' wasn't descriptive enough. "Pretty?"
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 01:17 am (UTC) (Link)
"I think pretty is what Sunny was going for," AB said when Bobby finally finished rambling. It was a horrible, good sign that he was flustered and nearly speechless. "If I have this effect on you maybe no one else will be able to talk to me the whole night." Won't that be nice?
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 30th, 2010 01:21 am (UTC) (Link)
Sunny laughed more freely as Abby relaxed more. "Oh fff Abby, you can not go fishing in this dress," she laughed. "It's too nice although..." shut up Sol Maria Anabella Garcia! It doesn't matter if Sam would appreciate her dress on their fishing trips, she doesn't want to hear it.

"You won't look like a gothic fantasy unless we let Bobby' girlfriend do your make up," Sunny teased. "And yes, you look pretty."
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 30th, 2010 01:42 am (UTC) (Link)
Bobby screwed up his nose and made a face akin to a child being told he was to be given nothing but broccoli to eat for the rest of forever. "Emilie is not my girlfriend!" He shrieked, a panic attack rising in his chest. Oh god. She's going to BE. THERE. She's going to BE THERE and I don't have a date to hide behind. "ABwillyoubemydateforthedance?"
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 01:53 am (UTC) (Link)
This was an unexpected turn of events, but it solved a lot of Abernathy's problems. She could go with Bobby. They were just friends. It wouldn't complicate things. In fact it would keep things from getting complicated. "I'd love to," she answered before she had a chance to really think about it.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 30th, 2010 02:09 am (UTC) (Link)
"Uh..." That was unexpected-- both his asking and her accepting. Shit. Sam was going to have a lot to say about this. Or worse, nothing at all. "Cool," he said awkwardly. He couldn't look either of the girls in the eye.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 30th, 2010 02:28 am (UTC) (Link)
"Oh," Sunny said feigning her bright tone, she noticed the sudden shift in awkward, it was hard not to notice while being crammed into a tiny dressing room with three people. The wheels were turning in her head already and she was quietly beginning to freak out about the whole situation. They had really made a mess out of things.

She knew Sam and Abby had an unspoken thing. They had changed over the summer and she hadn't been the only one to notice it. But now Bobby was asking her to the dance? Didn't he know the trouble that would cause?! He asked her because I brought up Emilie! But only because Bobby brought up Stasi and said he was a scumbag! No one calls my... Her face contorted a little in confusion. What was Stasi anyways?

"Let's go look for shoes!" she made to go out the door but couldn't move until Bobby left the fitting room. "Bobby..." she said. "Shoes... out there, not in fitting room," she indicated the door.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 30th, 2010 02:33 am (UTC) (Link)
"Oh, yeah." Red-faced, he stumbled backwards out of the changing room so AB could get back into her normal clothes-- well, normal-er clothes. And then there would be shoes. This day was never going to end.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 02:37 am (UTC) (Link)
Abernathy wanted to thank Bobby, but then Sunny started acting all awkward and that's when she realized they were all crammed into the little changing room. She was thankful Sunny was ushering them out so she could change and once her friends were back outside the door she changed out of the dress that had caused such a panic (and was now causing all kinds of other problems).

"Maybe we can find some colorful shoes?" she said while shimmying into her bell-bottom jeans. "I might have a pair of dress converse," she said, though she knew Sunny would shoot that down. She'd let her wear flats, but even the dressiest converse were out.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: September 30th, 2010 02:41 am (UTC) (Link)
"Colorful works!" Sunny said from the other side of the door. "But no converse. It doesn't matter how dressy they are, you can not wear converse to homecoming," she said already feeling more comfortable but still insanely guilty about the whole mess.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: September 30th, 2010 02:57 am (UTC) (Link)
"... you can't wear converse to homecoming?" Great. Now he needed to buy shoes too.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: September 30th, 2010 03:00 am (UTC) (Link)
"Bobby if you want to wear converse to the dance I'm totally okay with it. You have my permission. But I'm afraid Herr Garcia won't let me out of the dorm unless I'm wearing appropriate shoes."

She emerged from the changing room clothes again and feeling much less ruffled than she was going in. As far as she was concerned this was a great idea. "Converse are classics," AB argued.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: October 2nd, 2010 06:44 am (UTC) (Link)
"Bobby, you can not not not wear converse to the homecoming dance," Sunny said crossing her arms. If Anastas could wear nice shoes, which he usually did, so could Bobby. Her logic was flawless.

"They are but there is a time and place for converse. Cute dress on a weekend, skirt and tee shirt. Completely casual, totally fine. Semi-formal... no, no way."
From: [info]spiceitup Date: October 14th, 2010 10:38 am (UTC) (Link)
Bobby wasn't a particularly mature looking young man. Even less so when he screwed up his face in a pout. In fact, he looked much like he did as a five year old having a tantrum.

"I don't want to buy new shoes. I like my sneakers. They're comfortable." He poked at some ridiculously high-heeled things on a shelf next to him. How girls teetered about in these he'd never know. "I don't care if she wears them too." Jesus, what if someone stepped on your feet dancing in THOSE?
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: October 14th, 2010 10:57 am (UTC) (Link)
Abernathy gestured at Sunny as if to say see! He doesn't care! This battle was already lost though. "Oh hell no," she said looking at the same shoes Bobby poked. "There's no way. I'd fall over and make a giant spectacle of myself. I'm already going to get stared at with my glorious mosquito net."

She moved to another section of the shoes. "Flats," she said plainly. "Flatly flat flats."
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: October 14th, 2010 09:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Flats are perfectly fine," she said brightly. "I bet we can find you a cute shiny pair," she said already busy at work in the shoes. She pulled four boxes out for inspection and handed them over to Abernathy. "You finding anything?" she asked.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: October 15th, 2010 12:13 am (UTC) (Link)
His eyes went wide. "Oh jeez, no. I wouldn't want you to wear those." He moved away from the big heels a little too fast, and knocked over a display of more of them. "Ahh, shit. I mean damn. Crap!"

He let the girls move over to the 'flats' area while he stacked the shoes he'd upended haphazardly on a table, eyes darting about for annoyed salespeople. See, they couldn't even stand up on their own; people shouldn't be wearing them. When finished, he slunk over behind Sunny.
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: October 15th, 2010 12:38 am (UTC) (Link)
"Why does everything have bows on it?" Abernathy complained rather loudly, tossing another pair of shoes back into a box when she realized it was an open toed flat with a big bow at the heel. She slammed the lid shut. "This. Is. Horrible. Who wears this crap?"

She was so absorbed in the fashion offending shoes that she didn't even notice Bobby turning their little sideshow into a three ring circus.
soleada From: [info]soleada Date: October 16th, 2010 10:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Ugh, bows," Sunny commented pulling a little face. "Shoes are so hard to find," she shook her head. "They're either too flashy or ridiculous looking." She pulled a few more boxes, some of them were metallic, some were shiny, and there were no bows, no flowers, no frou frou.
From: [info]spiceitup Date: October 18th, 2010 07:46 am (UTC) (Link)
"What about shiny chucks?" Bobby asked helpfully. "They're flat and shiny!" Sunny gave him a withering look, and he clammed up again. "This is your own fault for bringing me shopping. Boys don't know shit about shoes." And, picking up another massive platform monstrosity, adding, "Though, I don't think a lot of shoemakers do either. It's a freaking doorstop!"
atotheb From: [info]atotheb Date: October 18th, 2010 08:09 am (UTC) (Link)
"I'm glad you came with us," Abernathy piped up.

She picked through the various boxes Sunny handed her. There was a pair of silver flats in her size, another pair of black and white checkerboard, and a pair in shiny purple. She tried a left shoe on each time and turned her foot this way and that

"It's a piece of modern art," she joked. Doubtless, Sunny and Bobby knew her opinion of modern art.

Abby was settling on the purple shoe and put all the ones she'd tried on back into their various boxes. "I think I'm set," she said, though she was certain Sunny would try to talk her into some other accessory. Poor Bobby would really start to whine soon; she didn't want to deal with that.
