In the desert between time
Moments ago, the MacEndale's powers were doing their best to rip him in two. Doubtless, the other current arrivals have similarly interesting stories as to what they were up to the moment everything changed.

What they have in common now is falling. Falling out of the sky and into sand. A lot of sand. Rolling hills and vast expanses of it.

The only things breaking up this desert is a small, non-walled kitchenette and classroom combination, with small desks and a blackboard set up on one side, and a counter and over on the other, with black and white tiled floors.

In said kitchen is a middle aged, balding man with a bow tie, who seems to be cooking blueberry muffins. A pot of coffee goes from brewing to ready on the counter nearby.

One second he feels like John Hurt must have in Alien, next he's falling from the freaking sky! He tried to summon his glider, but instead ended up face first in the sand. He manages to get himself to his feet and sees the setup.

"What the fu..?" He has no words for the sudden change in scenery.

Well this was certainly a change of scenery from the rolling green hill of home.

"Am I still drunk from last night or something," Casey says to himself as he picked himself off the ground. He really didn't know what the hell was going on here.

"Yes, but you're also not hallucinating." the man responds pleasantly.

"Coffee?"

"Really," Casey says kind of wanting it just to be one.

"Make is a hard coffee and sure."

"What is this place? What's going? And who are you and why am I not bed? Not that I don't appreciate breathing or anything," Jasoin said trying to get his bearings.

"In point of fact, from one point of view, you are dead. Because your reality, in both of your cases, is broken. Mr. MacEndale, you've recently encountered the Exiles - and while they mostly stabilized your reality, there's a lot of fallout from the events that broke it that are keeping that stability... tenuous.

When your timelines were corrupted, I was able to save both of you from non-existence of one sort or another. How is a long story. But what's happened to your timelines, your realities, is happening to thousands of others. Time, in a manner of speaking, is broken. And ripples from the source of that breaking are moving through other universe's timelines. Sadly, the resources to fix the problem are very few."

Casey just gave a long confused blank look. He had not idea but the strange man was talking about. It sounded like he was speaking English but he didn't really get what he meant. Hell Casey was starting to suspected that leprechauns where trying something stupid again.

"The Exiles? You mean those guys that got rid of the demons?" Jason looks around. "Where are they?"

"Yes. They are en route to their next destination."

He looks between the pair of them. "I'll try to simplify, though I believe both of you have at least a basic conceptual understanding of the timestream and the existence of alternate universes.

Based on that assumption - something, currently unknown, destabilized time in one universe. Like dropping a rock in a pond, this had a ripple effect. These ripples cause disruptions in the timestream in other universes. When that happens, time changes, events change, things don't happen the way they were supposed to. And every time a universe changes, it sends further ripples up the timestream, damaging time in worlds that universe is tied to... currently, thousands of universes are affected. Some in small ways, some in very large ones.

Every now and then, a being emerges who is so central to the reality of their universe that they don't entirely cease to be, or cease to exist as they were, when things change. This allows me to pull that individual here and try to recruit them. The odds are... not good. But its all I have to work with to try and fix time.

You see, when things change, there are opportunities to stabilize worlds too, by putting the house back in order, as it were. When worlds become stable, it helps stabilize the worlds around them. Eventually, if enough worlds are fixed, I may be able to send the Exiles back to the source of the disruption."

"OK," Casey says still a little confused but about as close to understanding it as he is probably capable of it. He barely took things serious in his own timeline so this was all very new to him.

"Unfortunately, you're absolutely correct. In your case, your world was made stable by the Exiles, its no longer damaging nearby realities - but a lot of damage has been done. Heroes have died, the world was placed in a state of virtual anarchy... it will be ripe for invasion when the Shi'ar fleet comes. They will term it 'protection of a vulnerable world' - correct, to a degree, but a conquered world is a conquered world.

In Casey's case, he had a hand in the destruction of his world. When the Scarlet Witch suffered a mental breakdown, and tried to meld her powers with chaos sorcery to reshape the world - she had help. Cthon, for one, the Octessence for another - the latter in a bid to try and make Dr. Strange vulnerable. Indeed, Strange was killed, as were a lot of others, with magic gone rampant. Her powers are based, however, on probability manipulation. The mutant Forge attempted to fight back, when he came to his senses, by gathering several other probability manipulators - Roulette, the Black Cat, Domino, Crosshairs, Casey, his mother... and use his device to heighten powers to try and fight back, to fight fire with fire. Their powers protected them - and broke probability. Now, two conflicting realities are vying for control and tearing the world apart - with one in a billion odds happening daily. Planes collide, black holes open and close, lightning hits people from clear skies. The faction Casey is in, is fighting with, may eventually win - but they'll inherit a demolished world.

These are the states of your worlds right now. You will have the opportunity to change these events back to fanciful lies by helping the Exiles. Save enough worlds, and your realities may shift back the way they should be. However, the risks are real. You could fail, you could die. Several Exiles have fallen in the line of duty. The handful of you that I've been able to save from collapsing universes are all that uncounted realities have. If the Exiles fail, there isn't a second chance. I won't be able to help you outside of this place - I don't exist in 'the real world'. Any of them.

Any questions?"

That was certainly a lot to take in. Especially all that talk about events at home that he did not remember and really sounded very far fetched to him. But at the same time it did not sound like a world he wanted to return too.

"I think I'm going to need some time to think this through before I can ask questions."

"I'm willing to bet we can't go back home," Jason surmised. He looks at the Timebroker. "Right?"

"On the contrary - if you doubt me that much, you can go home. All you need to do is ask. But I won't be able to pull you out a second time, and the lie would become 'normal'. In Casey's case, one of the engineers of a broken reality. In yours, Mr. MacEndale, a very lonely cemetery plot."

Well Casey didn't know what to do there so he just did what he usually did in this type of situation. He pulled out a coin and flipped it putting the choice to chance since that usually did work to his favor.

"OK. I'll take your word for this but what does this mean I'm doing," Casey says after the flip.

"You'll be joining the Exiles, as they've chosen to call themselves. A small group of individuals pulled from their realities. They move from universe to universe, and in each one, you'll be given instructions by a device called the Tallus. Its an indestructible artifact - which there is only one of, temporally bonded to the wrist of the longest serving Exile, Sarah Rogers. It transmits information to her on how to attempt to fix the damage the ripples in the timestream caused. When you finish fixing one reality, you'll be moved to the next."

"So it's one big old multi-verse tour," Casey says, "Well I guess I can lend a hand there." It was the kind of thing his ma had taught him to do.
