The Monster That Wanted to be a Real Man

Quasimodo walked over the crumpled bodies of the AIM personnel as he began his search of the lab. The location was on a small unmarked island in the Pacific. Norman Osborn had discovered this group of AIM scientists, but saw them as little threat and wrote them off. Normally Quasimodo would agree, but this group had been studying a subject that interested him, biomechanics. They were looking for ways to create humanoids with bionic enhancements of a less mechanical nature. What the Living Computer wanted more than anything, was to attain a human body. If what these AIM scientists had tried to do worked, then feasibly not only could Quasimodo create a body for himself, but a body that would allow him to transfer his power as well. On that glorious day, his life would begin anew. He'd use Osborn's archives to make him a power unto himself.

"At last I will be the master. It will take time, but if there is one thing a living computer has, it's patience."

Quasimodo then began to sift through AIM's files.

In truth, Doom did not truly have to search for the Living Computer. He was aware from the outset that Quasimodo wanted most to acquire a true body for himself. Few people or groups possessed the knowledge or resources to make such things happen.

All Doom had to do, in truth, was wait to learn who Quasimodo went after. When the reports came in regarding the AIM facility, Doom nodded to himself in satisfaction. Of the five locations he'd chosen that Quasimodo might move on first, Doom had chosen the most likely.

Doom teleports into the room and watches the Living Computer at work.

"Quasimodo. Doom would have words with you." he says without preamble.

Quasimodo had been absorbed in what he was doing, thus the voice caught him off guard. He turns to look at Doom.

"I can only imagine one reason you'd seek me out, Doctor." Quasimodo was instantly reviewing all the data he had collected on Doom for Osborn. He knew what the man was capable of. Hell, he probably understood more than most did. If a fight became necessary, he'd need it all.

"You presume much to claim to know the mind of Doom." Victor says, arming his weapons with a metal command, but not attacking.

"Impress me."

"I suppose it was inevitable that once it was discovered who had Osborn's archives that any number of individuals would hunt me. I'm flattered you came yourself. I know you are not a man who deals in trivial tasks." Qusimodo picks up on the various energy signatures of Doom's weapons. Many of which had been logged as being a part of Doom's various armors. There were also new weapons, though that itself was also a calculated likelihood. Quasimodo prepared the countermeasures most likely to work. "You are among the foremost geniuses in the world and certainly don't need anything Osborn would have, you'd simply make it yourself. Due to the events of Wakanda your financial infrastructure is destroyed. While monetary value is something normally beneath a man of your ambitions, one does what is necessary. You desire Osborn's various currency stockpiles."

Bah. Computers.

Even a stopped watch was right twice a day. Still, Doom gives no hint that Quasimodo's information is correct. That would give him away too easily.

"Allow me to return the favor, Quasimodo. You are a living computer, a bastion of information to those who hold you loyalty. However, there is one bit of knowledge that has constantly eluded you, one piece of knowledge that you yearn for, and yet do not find.

You seek a body of true flesh and bone, one that can hold your considerable intellect and allow you to no longer be used as some tool to be cast aside once your usefulness to the current wielder has ended." Doom says, narrowing his eyes.

"There are many who hunt you for the things you know. One in particular would have me turn you over to him once I have what I desire.

However...you and I need not work at cross-purposes." Doom says simply.

"We may even...aid each other."

Quasimodo's humanoid eyebrow raisesat Doom's offer.

"Indeed you do know me and what I desire above all else. In fact, before I was forced into Osborn's service, I may even have agreed. However, I learned a great deal cataloguing potential enemies and allies for him. While even I would not presume to know your mind, Doctor, I have detected a pattern over the years with those you have 'allied' with in the past." Quasimodo's weapons were prepared, just in case.

"You firmly believe yourself the most capable man in the world, and there are few who could dispute that, your accomplishments speak for themselves. Any you ally with eventually earn your scorn or derision as they cannot match you. The illusion of a true alliance is gone and you no longer seek their equal participation, but to control them utterly. A prudent pattern of behavior, don't get me wrong, but it leaves me little assurance that this particular case would be different."

"Oh, I do not seek a long-term alliance, Quasimodo. One either controls or is controlled, but I can even agree that you and I do not need to do battle or disrupt each other's goals.

Provide me with /everything/ you took from Osborn. His monetary infrastructure, his designs, past, present and prototype and any information he obtained on the super-heroes from H.A.M.M.E.R. Purge those files from your database after giving them to me and I will help you with that which you most desire." Doom tells him.

"I, with my son, will craft you a body that can store your vast knowledge and power, and allow you to move among the human herd as you will. You will take no action against Latveria, be it direct or indirect...and you will have the human body you crave Think hard upon this, Quasimodo.

Few others will offer you what I am offering and they will make you jump through hoops if they deliver at all. Your records should inform you that when Doom gives his word, he honors it." Doom tells him.

Quasimodo considers this. Various case files flow through his mind, but he knew Doom spoke truly. He analyzed the words Doom said, attempting to detect possible loopholes Doom could use against him. In the end, it probably was the best offer he'd get and there were certainly worse people to have as a temporary ally as Victor Von Doom.

"You speak truly, Doctor, as you yourself have said. Very well, I agree to your terms. Though I find myself curious, what of your ally? I expect he will also desire the information I possess."

"And he will have his information, as I agreed upon with him. I did not, however, say I would turn you over to him. I said only that I would provide him what he sought." Doom tells Quasimodo.

"And I do not believe he would be as charitable to you as I. Blackheart is not known for his congeniality."

If Quasimodo could gulp, he would. He had enough data on the Son of Mephisto to steer well away from him.

Kristoff will make all the appropriate technical and security modifications that the guest Doom has just informed him of requires, and when they arrive, the boy in armor will go to one knee before his father in greeting.
"Welcome home, Sir."

Quasimodo says nothing for the moment, believing that speaking before Doom returned his son's greeting would be an insult. He would endeavor to maintain a solid working relationship with Doom and his son, if for no other reason than for them to be more willing to aid him in his dream.

Quasimodo's larger eye takes in Kristoff's image, quickly cataloguing everything he had learned of the boy for Osborn. Something a scientific prodigy at a young age, though it was debated if whether this intelligence was natural or as a result of the modifications once performed on him by Doom's Doombots. Has ties to the Fantastic Four that can't be discounted. Also, while loyal to his father, often has conlficting feelings in regards to Doom's methods. This factor may prove of crucial importance in the future. End of log.

"Rise, Kristoff." Doom commands, looking at the younger man.

"Quasimodo will be our guest for a short duration. In return for providing pertinent information and resources to Latveria, we will create for him a body to house his vaunted intelligence." Doom tells him.

"Quasimodo, this is my son, Kristoff Vernard. He will aid us in creating the body you see. I will need to consult my library for the proper alchemical and biological information to use toward your new home, Quasimodo.

For the time being, you will be granted a guest room and limited access to the premises." Doom says.

He would have to consult the Great Library in his possession, but he was certain the necessary tools were there.

"Have you questions?" he asks.

Kristoff stands and nods to Quasimodo. "A room is already ready." One far from unauthorized areas.
The young regent has no questions for his father yet. But he's smiling rather eagerly. The scope of the project is fascinating.

He just hopes the drive behind the project does not involve the demon overmuch. He will not ask that. He'd rather not know.

Quasimodo doesn't have quite the aversion to alchemy that most beings of science did. After all, if one studied it's base components, it was very much a science unto itself.

"Not at the moment, Doctor Doom." Quasimodo turns to Kristoff. "Thank you, Dr. Vernard. However I require little in the way of nourishment or sleep so you need not waste such things on me. However, I certainly mind access to a computer terminal. I would certainly like to gauage the state of the word after the lunatic, Osborn's, fall."

"Kristoff can prepare a terminal for you without issue. It will allow you the access you seek." Doom says, nodding to his son.

Doom does not consider if Kristoff is thinking far enough ahead to engage all of the safety measures to keep their databases from being infiltrated, or if Kristoff knows to provide a terminal that does not have access to Doom's private network.

He does not consider these things because he knows that Kristoff will do so without prompting.

Like father, like son.

"Of course, Sir." Kristoff has indeed, already considered those precautions. "There is always much to keep up with," he agrees with the living computer. Which reminds him. He looks to his father before ushering Quasimodo off to said computer accomodation.
"Sire, I hope to talk to you shortly about that design work I commissioned for the project in Strelsau." About Stark.

And Kristoff will nod politely and do exactly that. Once Quasimodo is situated -- and under discreet observation -- he will go to dinner.

"Lead the way, Dr. Vernard," Quasimodo says pleasantly. He takes notes of the "Streslau" comment but doesn't press the matter. He allows Kristoff to lead him to were he would be situated. He has to admit, even limited access to Doom's technology is an exciting prospect. This could be worthwhile afterall.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]latverianregent
2011-06-16 09:11 pm UTC (link)
And Kristoff does lead the way. And during the course of the path there, he comments, "The Thinker played his part in the Intelligencia's ...excesses, did he not?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]legends_baddie
2011-06-16 09:22 pm UTC (link)
Quasimodo turns to Kristoff at that comment, his larger eye appearing to glisten a bit. "There's no need to give that wannabe scientist the courtesy of calling him by his chosen title. He is, whether he wants to admit it or not, the MAD Thinker. And yes, last I heard he was among their number." Quasimodo's humanoid eyebrow raises. "Why do you ask?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]latverianregent

[info]legends_baddie
2011-06-16 09:39 pm UTC (link)
Now Quasimodo is interested. "Something happened in the last year..something significant. So much so that Doom couldn't afford for this to be known to Osborn lest it be taken as a sign of weakness. This event was caused by the Intelligencia. Significant enough that even after a year you still desire vengeance for it. I can relate to putting vengeance off for greater purposes." Quasimodo says no more. Rather he waits to see what affect his analysis has on Kristoff.

2011-06-16 09:48 pm UTC (link)
If Quasimodo was bothered by Kristoff's tone, he didn't show it. "I make it a point to know where to find him if the urge to destroy him is strong enough. My last reliable piece of information on him was that he was hiding under the patronage of a Lichtenstein noble."
