Business Call.
Kristoff watched the news and was... vexed. He telephoned Tony Stark.

Sitting on the couch in his living room wearing nothing but boxers and an open robe, Tony watched several news programs at once, though with the sound turned down, not wanting to awaken the woman upstairs in his bed.

Head supported in one hand, Tony watched with growing consternation the fury on his face. He had been completely mindless with rage, fixated on nothing but... had he really seen Obie, or had he imagined that? Rhodey reminded him, Obie was dead, and...

He had to get up and pace. Just thinking Stane's name was making him angry and restless again. Tony headed for the stairs, fully intending to wake Monica... Monique... whatever - and find in her the therapy he'd found earlier, but the ringing of his phone arrested his movement, as he decided whether or not to answer.

Finally, Tony backed down the stairs, moving slowly. He had the sudden presentiment that if he picked it up, his former C.F.O.'s voice would be on the other end, and he hated to admit that the idea frightened him.

The name on the display was for Kristoff, though, and Tony exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding before answering, ignoring one last shiver of alarm that it still would be Obie who answered his:

"Stark."

"Mr. Stark, I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but I wanted to confirm that you are currently in good health, all things considered." Because one does not simply ask a man if he has gone out of his mind. Kristoff was not brought up that way.

Tony smirked wryly to himself. Who would have guessed the Latverians had tact?

Pretending not to know that Kristoff was asking if he'd lost his marbles, Tony answered, "Me? Oh, sure. Never better, actually. Fit as a fiddle, I think the expression goes. Very kind of you to check up on me, though. What about you? How's you're health? It's not flu season in Latveria, is it?"

"That is good to hear. I am well, thank you. It is not, although on the whole we are attempting to ensure that seasonal effects of influenza cease to be an issue in Latveria. Disease displeased Doom. "So we are, as you Americans say, 'still on' for Strelsau?"

"Strelsau!" Damn! "Yes! We're still on." He'd almost forgotten. "Tomorrow, isn't it?"

"Yes, tomorrow," Kristoff says simply.

"Right." Shit. He didn't need this right now. Probably. If something like what happened yesterday, happened again...

"Everything will be great. Just... great. Great." He was feeling a little agitated.

And Stark's rambling repetitively. How to be a gentleman about this?

"If any kind of conflict has arisen, it could be possible to simply keep in touch in case of difficulty, rather than your being personally present."

Tony stopped pacing and frowned. "What kind of conflict might there be?" He asked.

It was sounding like Kristoff didn't want him there. Was he making some sort of deal with Stane that would destroy his project and allow that bastard to steal his business out from under him a third time?

"Hey - there's no conflict," he tried to keep the anger out of his voice, but he was barely hanging onto it. "I'll be there tomorrow with bells on - you can count on that, and there won't be any 'difficulties' either. Got it?"

At the initial question, Kristoff is frank. "I'm a mathematician, not a legal expert. I don't know under what circumstances Americans are asked not to leave the country." If one Latverian subject assaulted another, Kristoff would guarantee neither would be leaving the country until the matter was sorted out. "But if you say there isn't a problem, I'll assume you would know better than I in this case." He's hearing something on the edge of Stark's voice, and he doesn't much like it. He's not twelve years old anymore. Only his father gets to talk to him like that.

"No, no problems," Tony muttered.

Truth be told, he didn't know if there were any problems or not. Tony's attorneys took care of all those matters, and he assumed Pepper would tell him if he couldn't leave the country for one reason or another - wouldn't she?

...of course she would. What was he thinking?

"No problems," he repeated again, more confidently. More in control of himself. "But if there were, like you said, we could arrange matters, either for a check-in, or I could send one of my engineers their in my stead. I may end up needing to do so after tomorrow anyway, depending on my schedule, but tomorrow is very important."

"Very well, then. Rest well, Mr. Stark. We will see you tomorrow."

"Yeah, yeah. Sure. Uh. Tomorrow. See you then, Kristoff." Tony hung up the phone and ran for the sink to splash water on his face before the other man could answer.

What was wrong with him?
