Mattie!
Flynn was sure the day was never going to end. It didn’t help that he kept checking the clock to make sure it was still working, though usually he was able to banter with the customers when they came in to make a purchase – his knowledge of music had grown significantly after spending so much time around the Dorny’s. One of them was usually singing along with whatever song was playing in the background, and they were usually very theatric about it. It was like working with performers who didn’t actually sing or play instruments, but he found them more entertaining if he had to be honest. They let him do pretty much whatever he wanted when he was at the store, so long as he also did his job of course.

Today, he had done everything he needed to do before his shift had started: he reorganized all the albums since the afternoon crowd had shifted a lot of them around, he restocked the receipt paper, swept a bit, and as he had promised, moved a few copies of Mattie Scarpin’s record to the front of the store so they were more prominently displayed. He was glad to see a few copies had sold since his shift had started, though if he had to be honest he was kind of glad the store was pretty quiet since it gave him time to finish some sketches he had been working on. He was just starting on the shading of Wolverine when he heard the bell of the door jingle, signaling a new customer had walked in.

His eyes lifted from the paper, the beginning sequence of ‘California Dreaming’ playing in the background as he looked over to acknowledge the woman who had just entered. He gave her a few seconds to look around before placed his pencil down and approached, keeping his distance since some people thought it was more bothersome than helpful whenever he offered assistance.

“Need help with anything?” He asked with a slight lift of his brows, showing she had his attention if she needed or wanted it. There was something awfully familiar about her, though he couldn’t place his finger on where he had seen her before… She was beautiful though, and he hoped she didn’t just brush him off and send him back to watching the clock and shading. He only had another half an hour or so until his shift ended and the store would close, but minutes were starting to feel like hours because of how dead it was.

Her eyes lit up as she caught the salesman's attention. Mattie had a feeling he was who she was looking for, but she pointed a finger in question and took a few steps forward, “I’m looking for Flynn?”

She usually wasn’t one to take up offers given by men she’d never met, but this bloke worked in a music store where her music was actually known, where she appreciated what they were doing for the muggle/wizard music industry, and hey, discounts were always welcome when it came to her very empty vault at Gringotts. Mattie had been in the store to browse before because she loved the unique idea of mixing the two worlds of music, and she’d found herself listening to bands she had been sure were purely muggle, but, no! They’d graduated from Hogwarts, or they’d studied abroad at another wizarding school. It was amazing how the melodies and rhythms and lovely lyrics could unite the two worlds.

Mattie pointed to herself, then at the album that had been, as promised, moved to a more prominent place in the store. It still thrilled her to see. “Mattie Scarpin, hi—I figured I’d take you up on your offer."

"You're looking for me?" He asked, surprised. As she explained who she was and why she was there, his brows lifted again. "Oh! Yeah, cool!" A slow smile spread across his face. "Glad you decided to drop by." He sounded just as pleased as he was, turning to acknowledge the album she had pointed at to explain who she was. It almost seemed like she thought he wouldn't recognize the name unless she reminded him of why it might be relevant. Truth be told, he had listened to the album since having spoke with her through journals, and he discovered he was a fan of her work, even before he knew how gorgeous she was.

"The display was full at some point," he pointed out, indicating that some had been sold that day, turning back to watch her reaction to the news. He could always tell the difference between true artists, and those who did it for the money, all based on how they reacted to knowing there music was doing well. He had a feeling she was really passionate about what she did because it came through in the way she sang - it was one of the things he had liked most about listening to the record.

Mattie's eyes widened; it was one thing to be told by your less-than-professional agent that you'd sold some records, it was another to actually see the empty slots on the shelf. She put a hand to her chest and moved closer to examine the display, amazed that something she created was something that other people wanted to hear. Mattie let out a breath at the thought, and reached out and grabbed the album of a different artist that rested next to hers.

"I'll pay someone back the favor," she said, looking over the cover. Mattie brought it up to the counter where Flynn was stationed, reaching into her purse to find the coins to pay for it. As she dug around, her eyes landed on his sketch book. She tried not to be nosy, she really did (unless it came to her sister), but her attention focused on the lone drawing on the opposite page of all the apparent superheroes.

It was a slender drawing of a woman in a form fitting pink dress, but what had caught her gaze was the black mask with pink rose resting on her face. She felt her heart begin to race, ready to burst through her chest. That was her outfit from New Year's, that was....

"How much?" she said, straightening up but unable to look him in the eye. He looked younger than Nicola, how could he be the man who---Mattie dared to look at Flynn, but immediately dropped her gaze again. No, no, it was just a coincidence! But that mask...Mattie rolled her shoulders, smiling tightly at the album on the counter. She felt like she couldn't breathe.

Flynn couldn’t help but smirk at the look on her face as she examined the empty spots in the ‘Mattie Scarpin’ display. It only confirmed his assumptions; that she actually cared about what she created, and wasn’t in it for the money. He could understand how the latter was certainly a perk, since he too sold his craft for a few galleons, but drawing had always been his passion. It made him happy, and that was more important than wealth. When she finally plucked out an album, explaining her reasoning behind it, Flynn gave a nod to show he understood. He allowed her to step passed him in order to get to the register, though as she brushed by, he caught a whiff of her perfume.

It was so unbelievably familiar… He had heard once that scent was the strongest link to memories – the scent of apple pie would always remind him of Christmases at his Grandmother’s house – but he could not for the life of him place his finger on what the scent of her reminded him of. It wasn’t like he could stand there and sniff her until it came to him. He was known for being a bit…well, odd, but he wasn’t that odd. He just marched to his own drum.

Stepping behind the counter, he worked on ringing her up. He noticed that she had seen the last drawing in his sketchbook, but it wasn’t until he looked up to tell her the price did he realize that she seemed to be avoiding eye contact. When she forced her smile, he noticed the dimples that appeared on either side of her lips, and-

Suddenly it clicked. Those dimples, her eyes, the perfume, the fact that she was acting so strange after seeing that picture of the woman in the mask; was this really the girl he had spent so much time wondering about? Was this the girl whom he had kissed so passionately on New Years? He knew it was all a spell, he wasn’t daft, or delusional, but he had never felt such a magnetic pull towards another person before. He could still remember how he felt as though there were something hooked behind his naval, pulling him towards her, not even knowing who she was.

“…11 sickles with the discount.”

He wanted so desperately to be able to say something - anything else, but words were escaping him. How did one bring something like that up? He certainly couldn’t outright ask her if she was who he had thoroughly snogged that night. Well, he could have, but he wouldn’t. His lips rolled under, hands resting against the counter, as she sorted through her purse for the coins. A breath was taken and his mouth opened as though preparing to speak, but before his voice could escape, the jingling of the shop door stole his attention.

This was the first time that Allyson had stepped foot in the shop since she stormed out, but is had been too long. So long that her sister had gotten pregnant and had a daughter and they still weren't speaking. Ally had a niece she had never met and nephew was turning three. It was time that they mend their relationship.

She took a breath as she opened the door to the shop. She was determined to stay calm. Giada would have to hear her out. Though she wasn't quite sure what she was going to say that she already hadn't.

Ally barely acknowledged Flynn as she walked straight past him into the back offices of the store, he was helping someone, and she certainly didn't need him to show her around. It didn't take her long to realize that Giada wasn't around.

She going back out front she finally took in the scene, well that was something she didn't have time to deal with. "Have you seen my sister?" Ally asked ignoring the awkwardness filling the air. "I need to speak to her." She caught sight of the record on the counter and the price rung up.

"Also I don't think you should be giving out discounts randomly."

Mattie had never been happier to hear a bell jingling. She nodded quickly at Flynn as he gave her the price and was ready to drop the coins in his hands when the apparently not-a-customer scolded him. She looked over in surprise, wondering if she was his manager and---had Flynn been lying about the discounts? No, he wouldn't---she barely knew him, what was she thinking?

Oh, she was so dumb!

She left the regular priced amount of sickles on the counter and pulled the record to her chest, feeling her face heat up. It was suddenly very hot in here! The excitement of her album sales, Flynn being the man from midnight, this woman---! Mattie muttered a quick thank you and turned on a heel, rushing quickly through the aisle of albums. She had thought that she had found a place where she could comfortably share her love for music, magic and muggle, but--how could she ever go back there knowing that she'd randomly snogged the boy behind the counter, or that he was bending rules over the chance that a girl might visit?

Merlin's Beard, she felt like an idiot Hogwarts student again. Stupid, stupid!

Of all the people to walk into the shop at that moment in time, it had to be Allison Davies, didn’t it? The woman hadn’t stepped foot through that door in over a year, so why wouldn’t she decide that now was a good time? He and Mattie tracked her progress from the front of the shop to the office that was located in the back, only to watch her come back up front. Flynn also felt his face getting hot when Ally spoke to him, partially because he was annoyed and partially because she had just embarrassed him in front of the musician who was standing on the other side of the counter. He was about to answer the tiny redhead when he heard coins drop onto the counter, making him turn to Mattie just as she was pivoting away to leave.

“Wait-…!” He started, but gave up when he realized she had no intention of turning around. Flynn lifted a hand to wipe it down his face, letting out a frustrated sigh before he looked back to Ally. “No, I haven’t seen Giada. Why did you wait until the shop is about to close to come looking for her? She hasn’t worked a night shift for months.” He was unable to mask the fact that he was annoyed, though he was more disappointed than anything. Mattie was probably never going to want to speak to him again. “And as for the discount, we reduce prices for local artists, I’m not an idiot who just spontaneously gives things away.” He reached over for his sketchbook, closing it before he worked on picking up the coins Mattie had left behind, completing the transaction.

“Should I tell Gi you were looking for her, or do you not think I should be doing that either?”
