Greta!
He lifted his chin, examining the bruise that was forming along his jaw in the window of Flourish and Blotts. Jake scowled and dropped his head, only to catch sight of his already black eye. He wished he could remember the concealment spells that didn't make his face twinge, because now he had to walk Diagon Alley looking as if he'd just gotten mugged. He tugged the collar of his scarlet robes a bit tighter, making sure that his auror badge was fully visible so that there could at least be a chance that people would think he'd been doing something useful.

Jake had been incredibly surprised this morning when arriving at work today. Instead of the usual busy paperwork he was shoved, Auror Booth and Dawlish led him to the training area and told him that today would be the first day of his physical rehabilitation. Jake had been too stunned to argue, and far too stunned to avoid the first few hexes that were hurled at his head. That hadn't been a pretty sight. The training had only lasted a half hour, much longer than Jake had expected himself to manage, but that was only the beginning of his morning.

Parchments were signed, healers were talked to, the bloody minister had come down to congratulate him on making his way back into the ranks. Jake had spent his morning in utter shock and complete silence, unable to argue against their desires to get him back into fighting shape. He was an auror, he took orders when they came, but what in the bloody fuck was going on?

He was supposed to be meeting Lottie for lunch in half an hour, but he wasn't entirely sure he could handle having to explain his morning, let alone his face. Jake slowly made his way through Diagon, meandering to waste time and try to think of an excuse to cancel. Maybe he could use work as an excuse, as it was giving him a splitting headache. He turned to head to the nearest owl post to begin this lie of a letter and almost rammed straight into a walking by pedestrian.

"Sorry!" he let out in surprise. His instincts needed to be better than that. Jake's eyes widened and he felt his ears grow extremely hot as he realized who it was that he'd almost knocked clear off the pavement. "Greta! Hi!" He cleared his throat gruffily. "Hello," he repeated, straightening his shoulders.

Greta yelped slightly, reaching out blindly with one hand to grasp anything that would stop her from losing balance and falling over. Something that appeared to be a shoulder saved her and her groceries from tumbling to the ground.

Jake Bexley's shoulder, as it turned out.

"Hello," Greta returned cheerily, smiling once recognition dawned on her. "Nice bumping into you." Belatedly, she realised she still held tightly onto his shoulder and released him when she saw the bruise marring his face.

Face crinkling with concern, she hitched the bag in her other arm so it rested more securely in the cradle of her arm. "Although it seems as if that wasn't the first time for you today."

The dark colour marked it as a fresh one, and, heedless of what might be considered personal boundaries for some people not her, Greta waved her finger at it. "That looks very painful." Particularly if no potion or salve could quicken the healing process.

She'd certainly teased Jake about being mysterious the other day, but she hadn't meant it quite so literally!

It made sense that he was standing on the pavement worried about what Lottie would say about his face that he'd run into the other girl he'd fancied like mad in Hogwarts. Jake had become a bit distracted the past few months with Ollie's troubles, the world cup, and Venice, that he'd lost track of his very slow-moving attempts at getting Greta to notice him. Merlin, that felt like quite a bit of time ago.

"I solved the mystery," he said with a nod, agreeing that it was indeed painful. Jake patted his chin lightly, wincing. "They want me back on the field."

It felt strange to say that out loud and even after enduring the past few hours it still didn't feel real. There wasn't a war going on but there were still dark wizards that were up to no good. Jake had learned early on that it wasn't only the cause of war that fueled people; there were plenty of reasons why people made bad decisions. Jake just didn't---it was one thing to deal with hexes he knew were not going to kill him because he could see the familiar face of the auror across the room, but there was already a panic swelling in his gut at the idea of heading back out into the world.

But that's what his healing sessions had been going for, right? He kept telling himself that he'd agreed to them for a reason, and this was supposed to be it. To become what he'd once been, even if that felt like a completely different life. Maybe it was a different life.

"Let me take those for you," he offered, gesturing to her groceries, "I'd look like a bum in these robes if I didn't help out the pretty girl I nearly bowled over."

"Congratulations!" Greta said, but then immediately frowned because she saw the bruise again and remembered exactly what it was that he did, and what that field was. It wasn't the same field, so to speak, that it had been less than four years ago, but that didn't make it much less dangerous. She, for one, had been happy to leave all of that life behind.

Consideringly, she then asked, "Is that the sort of thing one should say congratulations for?" Without much thought, Greta pushed her groceries into Jake's proffered arms, and continued, "It feels quite insensitive. But not saying congratulations also feels insensitive because it is an accomplishment, isn't it? And accomplishments deserve congratulations, that's just the polite thing to do."

She sighed. "What would you prefer?" Turning to Jake, she looked at the bag he was now clutching as if seeing it for the first time. "Oh, thank you!"

She was a bit confusing. Jake watched her thought process with bewilderment, but he smiled anyway. He shrugged, shifting the bag to get a better grip on it.

"Congratulations are welcome, I think," he said with a nod. It was almost like he was reassuring himself that his re-training was not a bad thing. The whole point of seeing Healer Diggle was to get back to the person he'd once been. While Jake...personally did not see that happening, maybe it was and he simply hadn't seen it occurring. The auror department seemed to have faith in him, why shouldn't he?

It felt invigorating. Invigoration was not a feeling he'd had in a long time. There had been no need to do anything, and now Jake felt like he'd wasted so much time. He hoped it wasn't the adrenaline rush he was currently feeling. Hope. Hope was another word that was a stranger in his recent vocabulary.

"I think it deserves to be celebrated," Jake said, straightening up. What would Ollie tell him to do right now? "With drinks, come out for drinks with me."
