Bret Michael McKenas was the only child born to his parents Carol and Marcus McKenas. His mother was a homemaker, and his father a mechanic. His father was the one who started his love for music of all genres, and Bret's earliest memories include everything from Johnny Cash to Bon Jovi while hanging out at the garage his father worked at. The first album Bret ever purchased himself was the Salt-N-Pepa album "Blacks' Magic", after he heard classmates talking about it. His parents weren't too thrilled with the album choice, but figured their son could figure out what kind of music he liked, and what he didn't. From that point on, Bret saved all of his money from mowing lawns, raking leaves, and whatever odd jobs he could get until he landed a job at a resturant as a dishwasher to buy new albums -- a little bit of everything. By the time Bret was in college, he had collected quite the selection of albums, and didn't really have any idea what he wanted to do with his life. He was reading through the student newspaper, and found an ad looking for a part time DJ at a local student hangout.

Bret applied for the job, and with his serious collection of music he quickly landed himself a spot in regular rotation through the other kids who hung out and spun records for the crowds. It was a learning process for Bret, and when he first started playing around with his own personal style. He began first remixing songs that he liked, and soon found himself with a local, and quite vocal, following for his electro remixes. It wasn't long before Bret switched majors from general education to music production at the University of Sryacuse, and found this was what he really liked doing, and had a passion for. Music.

As he gained a bit more fame for his remixes and his club sets, he started booking gigs outside of Syracuse around the state of New York. It was a bit nerve-wracking for Bret at first, he had never really considered himself a performer by any stretch of the imagination. It took awhile for him to really become comfortable with himself enough to realize that people were going to think whatever they wanted about him regardless, so he just concentrated on the music. He soon was delving into creating his own work, and from his earnings DJing clubs around the state, he purchased a small set of his own equipment to record in his own time. By the time graduation came around, Bret had a steady gig travelling around and playing shows at clubs all around the East coast. After he had his degree, Bret spent a lot more time travelling the country and playing shows all over. But Miami was where it really ended up biting, and Bret soon made the move from his home state of New York to the warm beaches of Miami.

In the summer of 2002, his first "official" single started climbing up the dance charts. Satisfaction became a huge hit that Bret really didn't expect. In fact, he didn't even have a record deal, and he wasn't sure how the song ended up in so many clubs around the country, as well as overseas. The song was more of a success overseas, hitting #2 in the UK and #4 in France. It also landed Bret a record label offer on a small label based in Miami. He jumped at the chance, and went to work on putting together a full album. The next year, the album released, and Bret has never looked back. Currently, he still is based out of Miami, but it isn't uncommon to find Bret playing sets, or producing records for various acts all over the country. He's more than content with his level of fame, and considers himself more of a nightowl due to his crazy late-night schedule out in the clubs.
