Brief Biography:
Ryder Illidge knew he was destined to fall into the world of showbiz. He had his little five year old heart set on it after he watched Stand By Me with his father, David Illidge. He looked straight at his father and said, "I want to be an actor". The words stunned his father since the boy was so young but he knew how much of a determined child Ryder was. David discussed the boy's future with his wife, Rita, and the two agreed to help Ryder pursue his dreams. Ryder knew that it was going to be a long road ahead of him but he wasn't afraid. It was something exciting to look forward to and he had his dad to help him out with the tough decisions.
He starred in a few random commercials ranging from Burger King to Jif to a few random toy commercials but it was a start. Ryder continued to be in a few commercials to try and get himself known but his big break didn't come until 1998 when he was cast in She's All That. He was cast as the popular jock/bully, Dean Sampson Jr. and it was one that Ryder had fun with. He didn't see himself becoming one of those that did nothing but teenager comedies for most of their career. In response, he worked hard to gain the lead role in Requiem for a Dream but his age was a hot topic. While Ryder was only eighteen by the time they were casting, his father fought for some time and in the end, Ryder was given the role. It was a very tough role for Ryder to take on mentally, emotionally and physically. He had to drop at least twenty pounds to fit the character and it was draining from day one to the final day of shooting. However, the grueling tension on his physical form was enough to garner him various amounts of praise.
After starring into two Disney films, The Princess Diaries and Finding Nemo, and an independent film, Highway, Ryder got his big break in Batman Begins as the psychologist, Dr. Jonathan Crane whose alter ego was Scarecrow. He had such a blast with the role that he even went around the set playing pranks with the other cast and crew members. Ryder was soon cast in The Departed and received plenty of Oscar buzz from the film. He ended up going home with the Best Actor Oscar and was overwhelmed from the beginning of the night to the following day. In 2007, Ryder received his second consecutive Oscar for Into the Wild, a role that Ryder has had the most fun on and says is his most favorite role of all. That same year, he was a host on Saturday Night Life and he returned to hosting duties in 2009 to help promote The Hurt Locker. He had his first comedy movie with Pineapple Express and was soon in The Hurt Locker, in which he received critical acclaim for it. He was nominated for his third Oscar but lost though Ryder has had no regrets about it. He used to say that "It wasn't always about winning, it was getting noticed that mattered". His other film was the sci-fi film, Star Trek, which was a reboot of the original series, where he played Leonard "Bones" McCoy. Having been a huge fan of the show growing up, it was something he was forever blessed with being apart of. After that, he recently completed Priest but hasn't given word on his next film project.
Ryder had shocked the world when it was reported that he was taking up the role of Steve McGarrett in the remake of Hawaii Five-0. When asked, Ryder said that it was something he wanted to try out and he had loved working on SNL enough to the point where he wanted to try out a television role. He had packed his bags and moved to Hawaii to begin filming in May. The series premiered in late September to raving reviews and a large number of viewers. Ryder has high hopes for the show and has been looking forward to filming the next episode every single day he's there on the beautiful island.
