Shy. Penelope is almost painfully shy. She does not like being the center of attention and does her best to stay out of the spotlight. When she comes out of her shell, however, she makes friends easily. She is friendly and pleasant to be around. One of her biggest quirks is the tendency she has to worry about things. She's very slow to anger and when she gets really angry she withdraws. She has to work things out in her head before she can function, though she is quick to forgive. Always on the go, Penny has to have something to do at all times.
Penelope was the only child born to Bradley and Jenny Dalton. They lived in a large house in Mistlethwaite thanks to Brad's work as a prosecution lawyer. But when Penny was six years old, her father died of a heart attack and left she and her mother alone. For a few years this seemed to work. They lived off of the money in their savings account and his life insurance. But Penny's mother wasn't suited to life alone and in her fifth grade year, Penelope was dropped off at Royal Fire Academy for Girls.
For the first year, Jenny visited her daughter on holidays and the occasional weekend. But soon even those visits tapered off. The child was lonely, and though she had a couple of friends at school, she was painfully shy. Most of her friends went home during the summer, but she had to stay. It seemed that her father's insurance money was paying for her tuition up until her senior year. She was stuck at the Academy until she was 18.
One weekend when Penny was 14, she snuck out of the school and went back to her home. Looking in the windows she could see her mother smiling and laughing with a strange man and a three year old toddler. Her mother had a new family. Heartbroken, Penelope returned to the Academy. Her heartbreak led her to the kitchen for a midnight snack. This is where she began to experiment with baking. The delicious smells from the kitchen began to attract the other girls who ate her experiments with the voracious appetites of teenage girls.
With permission from the head of the academy, Penelope found a job at Westin Bakery for a few hours after classes during the week and on the weekends. She learned to bake things other than pies and tarts and she also learned that she had a strange ability. She didn't often come into contact with dead things and she wasn't sure how long she had the eerie ability, but one day while she was going through the fruit at the back of the bakery, she accidentally put her thumb through the rotted portion of a peach. To her great surprise, it healed itself and became a whole ripe peach again. She put it down abruptly and stared at it for several minutes before picking it up again. But the second she did so, the rotted area returned and the oozing juice ran down her arm.
It took several other rotting fruits to substantiate her suspicions, but she realized that she had the power to bring dead things back to life. She was leery of trying it on other living things, but insects seemed the next logical step to her. She touched dead flies on the windowsills of the Academy and watched them zoom back to life. But she noticed a detrimental side effect of bringing them back to life. After a short amount of time, another fly would fall down dead. It was this that made her realize how powerful and awful her gift was.
Penny only uses her power on fruit these days. The thought of bringing another human back to life terrifies her and she won't go anywhere near a funeral or graveyard.
