ALPHABET CITY: WHERE TWO WORLDS COLLIDE
Alphabet City
Alphabet City is an example of two worlds colliding. It's come a long way since its RENT inspired days, but one thing is clear: the buildings aren't in the best condition, the rent is too high, and the man who owns your building is probably a slum lord. Once considered the most dangerous area in New York City to live in, due to gentrification, the area has changed. It houses large Hasidic Jewish Families, Latino Americans, and young trendy people trying to cut corners while living in Manhattan. It's safe enough to walk around with friends at 3 am in the morning but still shady enough that all the parks are gated after dark. It's also best to avoid going down lonely avenues alone. Still, what's not to love about the area? There's probably a Starbucks in walking distance from a high traffic drug ring, just remember to pack a switchblade in your Fendi! People who live here can see a glimpse of what New York City used to be and what it's become.

RIVERSIDE DRIVE: AVOID CITY LIFE WHILE STILL LIVING IN IT
Riverside Drive
Riverside Drive is a known for its beautiful pre-war architecture. Many people come to Riverside Drive to settle down, yet they find themselves unable to cut out city life completely. In this stone grey retreat littered with brightly colored foliage and tight streets, this area caters to a more laid back and family oriented set of people. Raising families, and maintaining the area's lush and quiet environment is important for residents. The view of the Hudson River is the perfect background to walk a dog, push a stroller, jog safely at dawn or just do what people so often forget to do when they live in New York City: relax and breathe.

THE VILLAGE: 'CAUSE YOU GOT IT LIKE THAT
Greenwich Village
The Village is what people usually imagine all of New York City to look like. It is: vibrant, bright, busy and lovely. Full of life and in high demand to live in. Consequently, it caters to an often wealthy clientele of people, to live in the Village is to live in luxury. It's a mecca of consumerism. Often, residential buildings share their space with bars and restaurants downstairs. With the influx of young, trendy professionals and more bars opening in an ever changing city, long time tenants fight with these businesses owners and do not hesitate to fight with the drunk patrons (and even throw things at them from their windows) that yell at all hours of the night. Still, with everything assessable, it's up to the individual to decide if the noise levels are worth it and if being constantly stimulated is something they can finally get used to.

BED STUY: 'CAUSE WE ALL CAN'T AFFORD TO LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG
Bed Stuy
Bed Stuy is full of history. Known as the Brooklyn equivalent of Harlem, this area is in a state of unrest. Some areas are cleaning up, the rent is rising. People who have lived in Bed Stuy their entire life are being uprooted while landlords play monopoly and try to figure out what area they can demolish and build back up to cater to more wealthy individuals. Then there are other parts of this area where the people have not and will not leave. These are the artists, the people who have lived there for better and for worse, Latino and Caribbean families, and the broke ass hipster or new, single young professional that can't afford to live anywhere else in the city but still wants to feel close to it. Some of the schools are the worst in the nation, but for people living here, it's a struggle. Slowly but surely, however, places are being renovated and rent is rising. It doesn't mean the quality of life is, though.

PARK SLOPE: RAISING FAMILY, NOT THE RENT
Park Slope
Park Slope is considered to be what the American Dream embodies. Diverse families of different incomes come together bearing one goal in mind: to raise a family and raise them well. Voted one of the best places to live in the nation, Park Slope has fought for what it has now. The community takes an active role in ensuring their pubic institutions remain open and well funded; they also fight to ensure their schools are maintained as some of the best in the State. The residents also do their part to keep things green, their parks are well maintained. The community also works together to ensure people are safe. People who live in this area have an active role in their community's zoning policies to ensure they keep their homes and their costs of living stable. Park Slope caters to activists, artists, established professionals, parents and domesticated people that want nothing more than to raise a progressive American family in the heart of Brooklyn.

WILLIAMSBURG: 'CAUSE WE ALL CAN AFFORD TO LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG
Williamsburg
Williamsburg, an often controversial subject, is New York City's epicenter of youth culture. The rent is rising, old deteriorated buildings are being rented in or demolished and young, well off individuals are making this area their home. As a highly sought after place to live in, most apartments double as homes and creative spaces. Yuppsters have succeeded in gentrifying the area completely and despite the often shoddy facades of most places, it is not to be mistaken for an underprivileged neighborhood. However, despite the arguably pretentious aspect of the area, it's a fun place to live. Some of the best bars and nightclubs are in Williamsburg. There's always a party - no matter the day of the week - and the streets come alive when the sun goes down. Although it was once voted as one of the most toxic places to live in, it's up to the resident to decide where the PROS and CONS lie.

FORDHAM: A PRODUCT OF FAILED GENTRIFICATION
Fordham
Fordham is an interesting neighborhood. There's Fordham Road, one of the largest shopping centers in all of the Borough. It is miles of hills, lined up with stores and restaurants. The people who shop there come from different neighborhoods for the prices and the excitement. The smell of honey roasted peanuts is prevalent and once the stores end, there's Fordham University and the street vendors usually lined on tables in Fordham Plaza with their homemade and speciality goods. Further up the Grand Concourse, there are a combination of decomposing buildings and old pre-war walk-ups. This area was once pushed forward into gentrification, however, the locals wouldn't budge. Lost investments from greedy landlords resulted in even cheaper rent. Mainly Immigrants or their third and fourth generation children live in the area, making it colorful, diverse, loud, and full of culture and confrontation. However, with mainly private schools, The Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Little Italy in walking distance, there's enough space for everyone to get along and try to make it in the big City.

CO-OP CITY: A LITTLE CITY WITHIN A CITY
Co-op City
Co-op City is an example of a little city inside of another. A diverse range of people live in this neighborhood, however, they must all have a clean record, make a certain amount of money and pass a series of interviews before moving into the community. Once that's out of the way, the area open its doors to anyone. The landscaping is beautiful and it's hard to think that the place was originally built on a swamp. However, that doesn't deter the locale from admiring the area and reveling in its peacefulness. Retired people, young middle class singles, and families call this intricately constructed area home. In walking distance, there is the famous and popular Bay Plaza that has several stores, restaurants and a movie theater. The only downside to this almost surreal little world of its own, is that there are no local trainlines that come to stop in Co-op City, instead, one must venture forth onto a bus or drive to leave the neighborhood. Many residents happen to like that sense of seclusion from the rest of the five Boroughs.

WOODLAWN: ON THE EDGE OF THE CITY
Woodlawn
Woodlawn is on the very edge of the city. Often known as "Little Ireland", this area caters to wealthy immigrants, usually of Irish, Italian, and Albanian heritage. Surrounded by some of the best pubs in the Borough and a plethora of Catholic schools, Woodlawn is also known for its faint floral scent. Relaxing and serene, it shares its space with the famous Woodlawn Cemetery. Also at the resident's disposal, is the equally famous Van Cortland Park. Instead of crowded buildings, a majority of the residents live in houses. Although not the easiest place to live in, Woodlawn is beautiful and far removed from city life. However, there are several trainlines in walking distance that make it possible to still enjoy an urban lifestyle at the expense of nothing.
