history

Howard and Ethel Barker were never exactly keen on having children of their own. Living in the small Iowa town of Lamoni, they were perfectly fine with their reputation of the conservative couple on the block, and having a house full of screaming little ones wouldn't have fit in very well with the image they strove to maintain. Perhaps unluckily for them, fate had other plans. On November 12th, 1986, at the age of thirty-nine, Ethel gave birth to twins Katrienne and Cassius, and conservative was the last thing life would ever be again. From the start it was obvious that neither parent had any idea how to raise a child, and it quickly became clear that investing time and energy into parenting wasn't something they were particularly interested in. Dumped into the local daycare from the moment they were potty-trained, Kat and Cassius were something of the neighborhoods forgotten children. Due to their non-existant upbringing Katrienne was extremely awkward with other children and often resorted to hitting, biting and kicking them in order to get her point across. The only company she wanted or would accept was that of her brother, and even his attempts to take her toys resulted in fights between the two of them. At home few toys existed, so she found other ways to entertain herself. Digging in the dirt outside and creating pools of mud and water seemed to top her list, something the other parents in the neighborhood advised their children to avoid at all costs.

By the time she entered middle school, Katrienne was well aware of what the other kids thought of her. She was the freak that came to school in clothes that were either far too baggy or far too loose. Her hair was always a mess (the result of no mother teaching her how to comb it), and she never had any friends or people to spend time with aside from Cassius. It didn't help, either, that she didn't do very well as far as grades were concerned. With a C average and no motivation to push to anything higher than the occassional B, her teachers paid her as much attention as her parents did. Her saving grace, especially once she got to high school, was gym. Competitive by nature (though still socially inept) Katrienne excelled in everything from running to basketball and volleyball. Her favorite thing, though, seemed to be tennis. Something about whacking a ball back and forth as hard as she could in an attempt to outwit her opponent seemed to suit her perfectly. So, while she wasn't included in her senior yearbook for much, she was featured as co-captain of the Central Decatur High Tennis Team.

As the end of her senior year approached, Kat found her options were limited, and her college chances were slim to none. Not to mention the fact that she didn't particularly want to go to college, but she didn't want to stay in Lamoni anymore either. The tiny town was too judgemental and closed in for her, she wanted to explore and make a new place for herself somewhere a little more advanced. The unfortunate passing of her grandfather Russel Barker, while tragic, could not have afforded her a better opportunity if she had planned on it. For decades the man had run the Motel 6 in Altoona, just a short distance from the far bigger city of Des Moines and its downtown nightlife, and she was presented with the opportunity of taking it over. It wasn't as big as Chicago or Kansas City, sure, but she would still feel at home there, and she was bound to meet someone that could understand her. In 2005 ownership of the building passed to the young woman, and though she was only twenty years old at the time, for once she believed she could make something of her life.

While the quality of the Motel hasn't much improved over the years, Katrienne's life and outlook have changed drastically. Upon moving out of her parents corrosive home she discovered what it meant to be able to be herself. Nowadays instead of oversized hoodies she can usually be seen sporting bright colors and outrageous hairdos. Her shoe collection outnumbers her current insecurities, and while still fairly socially awkward and unable to relate to people, she does have some friends and places that she can go to relax without worrying about what people think of her. She lives in her Motel and runs it effectively while simultaneously submersing herself in the community and figuring out what it means to be her own person.

→1992-2001: Lamoni Community Schools.
→2001-2005: Central Decatur High School.
→2005-Present: Owner of Motel 6 in Altoona Iowa.

Favorites: cats, spiders, coffee, cigarettes, dance music, macaroni and cheese, heels, tennis.
Hates: big dogs, little dogs, stuffed dogs, judgemental assholes, unnecessarily slow songs, school, tomatoes.

Fun Facts:
♥Has three cats named Bovine, Baxter and Persephone, as well as a baboon spider named Buttons.
♥Katrienne is very involved in the Altoona community, she frequently volunteers for neighborhood projects, helps out with concession stands at South East Polk High sporting events and is a regular at various establishments on their karaoke nights.
♥While she no longer plays in mud puddles, she can often be found in the motel swimming pool, which is arguably the cleanest thing on the property next to her own rooms. She often keeps her keys with her while she's there, so she can just hand them to people instead of checking them in properly.

Quirks: →Seeing as she doesn't make her sexuality known, and is rarely seen out and about with her twin Cassius, a lot of people assume they're one person with severe gender identity issues. She doesn't really care, though, and in fact things it's sort of hilarious.
→Her motel allows all manner of pets aside from dogs. She has no particular reason to hate them as much as she does, she just does, and she has the tendency to hiss at them if they're bothering her.
