Spruce is the brainchild of designer and entrepreneur Kate Vaughn, and her business partner Elliot Jane, who is a carpenter and furniture designer. Tired of struggling to find all of their favorite things by shopping online or making a dozen trips in one day, Kate and Elliot combined their expertise to conceptualize a retail establishment that was built for a specific customer with a specific goal in mind. Having worked in the retail buyer's world, Kate imagined a place where you could find everything from artisan-made jewelry to hand screenprinted tees, from a small selection of the newest book titles to kitchenware and furniture. Elliot took charge of creating a cohesive and varied look with the idea that everything should be eyecatching, original and well-crafted. From there, the pair invested in the concept of a mid-century mercantile store, where every item is handpicked by Kate or Elliot to be put on the shelves.
