If someone had spoken to an 18 year old Max Stone back in 1980 and told him that he would be happily married someday, he would've laughed in your face. If that same person had followed up that news with the fact that he would be a father, he probably would have spit on you. Fatherhood, as well as marriage, were the last things on the New Jersey native's mind at that time. Max Stone and his best friend Crosby Brooks had just started a band together. Max played guitar and handled the vocals while Crosby drummed. The idea of ever having a wife and kids seemed inconceivable and would only slow down their plans for the total domination of the punk rock scene. Their plans were to be bigger than the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Stooges combined. Crasting Knives, a band name meaning "stealing drugs" that was derived from the fictional slang language known as Nadsat in the classic novel A Clockwork Orange, may not have surpassed those bands in fame and notoriety, but they have certainly carved a path for themselves over the decades. They've headlined countless tours, played to sold out stadiums, and have earned their place in the fabric of punk rock music history. They've lost previous members to drugs, jail, and creative differences, but Crosby and Max remain the backbone and spirit of the band. Along the way, both men struggled with drug addictions, alcoholism, and have seen their fair share of legal troubles. However, as they've aged their lifestyle has begun to mellow out while their live shows remain just as electric as ever.
Things really didn't begin to change for Max Stone until he was nearly 30 years old. Crasting Knives had just finished playing a show at CBGBs as part of a local punk rock extravaganza and were enjoying drinks backstage when a roadie allowed a few groupies in to meet the band. This was when a then 27 year old Max first met 18 year old blonde bombshell, Veronica Cross. The two became completely inseparable; it was a whirlwind romance. Veronica began touring with the band within days of their first meeting and worked as their merch girl. During a stop in Vegas on the tour, after only 3 weeks of knowing one another, Max and Veronica were married in the famous Little White Chapel. Though no one expected the couple to make it through the rest of that tour, let alone decades, Max and Veronica have led a very fulfilling married life. Less than a year after their wedding, Veronica gave birth to twin boys that they named Daxon Blaze and Dexter Phoenix. Contrary to what he had originally thought about marriage and children, Max discovered that he actually enjoyed his life more than he ever had before becoming a father. Dax and Dex were literally born and raised on punk rock. They toured with the band from the time they were infants and actually took their first steps on the Crasting Knives tour bus. Max loved his wife and his boys more than anything, but what goes up must eventually come down.Previously a heavy cocaine addict, Max dove back into the nose candy head first after finding out Crasting Knives had been dropped from their label due to a corporate buyout with another label. Although they still had more than enough money to live comfortably on, Max, Crosby, as well as the other members of the band began to worry about the future of Crasting Knives and what would eventually come to pass. The longer it took to develop some semblance of a game plan, the further Max delved into his tried and true coke habit. At this time, Dax and Dex were 3 years old and Veronica was pregnant for the second time. She grew increasingly worried about her husband, but didn't allow herself to fall back into her old ways with him for the sake of herself and her children. Though Veronica had pleaded that he go to a rehab center so that he could get back on track and take care of her and the children like any good husband and father would do, but what set him straight was the birth of his daughter. On September 9th 1992, after a particularly vicious argument, Max left Veronica to go "for a walk." She of course knew this meant that he was going in search of more drugs. It was about an hour after he'd left the house that she went into labor and had to phone for an ambulance to be taken to the hospital; she'd called Crosby's wife, Samantha, who was also pregnant at the time and asked her to come over and keep an eye on the twins. Meanwhile, Crosby went out in search of his friend and band mate. He eventually found him and drove him up to the hospital to be with his wife. Max was high as a kite when they first arrived and it wasn't long before they moved Veronica into a delivery room where their daughter was born half an hour later. |
history (cont.)
Directly after her birth, their beautiful baby girl was given no name. Veronica was too drowsy from the pain medication to think clearly and Max was still too messed up on cocaine. They took "Baby girl Stone" from her parents for a little while and when they brought her back, Max held her. He began making up little sing-song rhymes to her and in his ramblings he stumbled upon the phrase "nixie pixie crushing bones, moxie roxie magic stone." Veronica sleepily told him that she liked the last part of his rhyme and suggested that they name the baby after it. Max, having misunderstood that his wife didn't mean the entire thing called in the nurse and filled out the paperwork officially naming their daughter, Moxie Roxie Magic Stone. She was an incredibly healthy, beautiful, and vocal newborn. The nurses all agreed that naming her Moxie certainly made sense because she was full of a pure fighting spirit. If she was uncomfortable, in any way, she would let you know within seconds with a blood curdling scream. Veronica and Max weren't quite sure how to handle their tiny, screeching daughter. Her older brothers had been very calm and rather quiet babies, but Moxie was a completely different story. Despite her extremely loud cries, she was an overall contented child. Unfortunately, her mother couldn't stand her screams for lengthy periods of time and often passed her off to her father or any of their other friends or family members that were around. To this day, Moxie believes that this early sense of abandonment, despite living in the same house, is what has damaged her relationship with Veronica.
From infancy on through toddlerdom Moxie loved her older brothers. They adored their baby sister and would spend hours doing everything in their power to make her stop all her racket, calm down, and just laugh. Most of the time it worked, but when it didn't there was always another method. Samantha, Crosby's wife, also gave birth to a little girl just a couple of months after Moxie was born. Her name was Sabrina and she became Moxie's best friend in the entire world. In fact, the two are so close that they're practically sisters. When the situation got desperate with Moxie's crying, Samantha would bring Sabrina over and Moxie would almost immediately calm down. No one could explain why, perhaps there's no real reason, but because they saw each other so frequently they formed a bond stronger than any other bond Moxie's ever experienced. The real problem came about when the girls were old enough to start kindergarten. Moxie, like her older brothers before her, was going to be home-schooled so that whenever the band needed to tour, Veronica and the kids could go along with them; they liked to keep the family together as much as possible. However, Samantha firmly believed that Sabrina needed a more stable environment for learning and after discussing it with Crosby, they both agreed that when the band toured Sabrina would stay home in New York with Samantha so she could attend a normal school. Being so young, the girls didn’t understand why they couldn’t be together and were both very heartbroken at the news of not being able to see each other every day as they’d grown so used to doing. As they both got older, Moxie and Sabrina learned to live for the summers when they could be together and play as much as they’d like no matter if the band was touring or not. They enjoyed watching their dad’s shows and loved being around the music in general. For Moxie, the time without Sabrina meant that she saw far more of her own mother than she would have liked. Veronica, no matter how much she tried, just didn’t seem to be able to relate to her daughter and it became obvious to Moxie that her brothers were the favored children in her mom’s eyes. She put up a tough front, never wanting anyone to think she was weak, and pretended it didn’t bother her. The summer before the girls were supposed to enter 7th grade, Moxie boldly told her parents that she didn’t want to be home-schooled anymore. She wanted to go to school with Sabrina and had already asked Samantha if it was ok if she lived with them during the school year. Samantha had told her that would be fine, but she needed her parents’ permission. Moxie didn’t care if her parents gave her permission or not. After talking over everything, Veronica and Max reluctantly agreed to let their daughter live with Samantha and Sabrina; Moxie was overjoyed. As inseparable as ever, the girls took on 7th grade together and head first. From Moxie’s point of view, it was a brand new adventure, one that she’d never had the chance to experience before. Sabrina proved to be a saving grace when it came to showing her how things worked, but even with the help Moxie was continuously in trouble. She didn’t understand how to act in a formal, school setting. She barely understood how to act around other kids her own age because she was so used to being around the band and her family. Samantha wasn’t bothered by the trouble that Moxie seemed to be getting into at first; she understood why it was happening and had many long conversations with her about how her raising was different from those of most other kids her age. Moxie grew to love Samantha even more than she had already and really did view her as a mother figure who genuinely loved and cared about her. It was something she’d been missing for so long. The only regret that Samantha had about Moxie living with them was that Sabrina seemed to be getting into even more trouble that she had before. The girls had been trouble makers early on, even as toddlers. They would color on walls, throw things in the toilets or out the tour bus windows and it continued as they grew. Moxie was anything but a good influence, and yet she’d never have the heart to completely separate the two again. The girls spent their school year together, with Moxie getting better all the while in dealing with social situations, then spent the majority of their summers with the band if they were on tour. When the girls were about 13 they began working as merch girls for their father’s band and they had a really great time doing it. They felt a lot more grown up and began to enjoy a lot more freedom as the years went on. Halfway through their teen years, around the ages of 15 and 16 is when the real troubling streak began to break through in both Moxie and Sabrina. They were beautiful, outgoing, and they had money which made them well-liked in social circles. They were invited to every party and they went to each one as well. It was around this time that they started having sex, smoking and drinking on a regular basis, and also experimented with drugs like marijuana and club drugs such as LSD and MDMA. Moxie in particular cut loose around the age of 16 and regained the attitude she had when she was younger. She constantly bucked authority and over the last few years has been arrested several times for offenses including disorderly conduct, reckless driving, drug possession, assault, underage drinking, and vandalism. Both Sabrina and Moxie have been in the public eye their entire lives due to their father’s fame. They’ve never really minded and just recently they’ve begun to take advantage of their particular situation. Moxie, who’s played guitar since she was 6 years old when her dad began teaching her, began writing songs with Sabrina really early on. As they got older they started toying around with the idea of starting a band of their own which they did the second they graduated from high school. The girls aren’t in a rush to make it big, however. They’re more into the idea of perfecting their craft and have only played a few local shows here and there so far. Most of the time, they’re just like any other person their age. They go to parties, they date, they enjoy concerts, movies, and shopping. The things that set them apart are minor and directly linked to their father’s fame, not their own. They’re often recognized by random passerby and spend quite a bit of time trying to avoid the paparazzi photographers. They still don’t understand why people find them interesting, but as one magazine headline stated they’ve become, “the princesses of punk rock" so people find them intriguing and seem to enjoy watching what they'll do next. Moxie, of course, is always ready and willing to give them a show. Currently, both girls are unemployed and sharing a high-priced apartment in the Tribeca area. Moxie's tried holding several different "normal people" jobs, as she calls them. Unfortunately, her behavior and more specifically her attitude tend to cause these ventures to be rather short-lived. For now, she's focusing on music and enjoying her youth. She still tours with Crasting Knives from time to time, selling their merch and being a complete daddy's girl. Her relationship with her older brothers has only gotten better, while she and her mother are still forever butting heads. Also within the last year, Moxie learned that she has an older half-sister by the name of Holly. She was the product of one of the many one night stands that Max had long before he'd ever met Veronica. Though Moxie hasn't really gotten much of a chance to get to know her yet, she's looking forward to the prospect of having an older sister. She's only hoping that she doesn't turn out to be a complete and total tool. |
personality
COMING SOON!love life
Moxie Stone has never been in love. Whether this is because she just hasn't found the right person or because she's blocking anyone from really getting that close to her, it's hard to tell. She's been in a couple of relationships in which she really cared for someone, but it was never love. She's far too guarded when it comes to emotions other than happiness and anger and really doesn't show her tender side to many people. However, despite the fact that she's never been in love and isn't particularly sure she believes that it really exists, she does enjoy having a boyfriend. Granted, she goes through them a little faster than most because she can be a little hard to get along with.
She likes the comfort, the fun, the dates, and the physical intimacy associated with being in a relationship, but at the same time isn't above the occasional one night stand or brief romantic affair when she's in between boyfriends. Moxie's attracted to guys that have beliefs and interests similar to her own, but there are times when she wonders if things might last longer if she found someone that was more her opposite. There's a good bit of confrontation involved with dating Moxie and she's not afraid to tell her boyfriends when they've pissed her off, hurt her feelings, or just been a dick in general. If a guy ever plans to really keep her, it'll require a lot of love and patience.
