biography. quick facts Nadalia dos Santos da Silva had never been away from home for any length of time when she left Lisbon, Portugal to attend University in New York. She had dreamt of going to the United States, of learning in one of their largest cities and when she was granted a scholarship to attend Columbia University she was excited. She had been at the school for two years before she met a man that would change her life. Their love was fast and hard, looking back Nadalia could say just where she had gone wrong but at the time all she wanted was the passion she felt. She was a semester shy of graduation when she turned up pregnant. She had the delusion that things would end in a fairytale between her and the man she had been seeing but it was when she told him that it all fell apart. He told her he was married and he wasn't going to leave his wife for some baby he didn't even know was his. It broke Nadalia's heart and instead of graduating from University she packed her things and returned to Portugal, back to her family and the support of the people who would help her with her daughter. They stayed in Lisbon for three years, until Nadalia got a job as a nanny for a rich family in Virginia, where she moved with her daughter. Nadalia met Alex when Ava was five years old. The pair had been living in Arlington, Virginia and one afternoon while Nadalia had her daughter at the park a man sat down next to her. He was on his lunch break and wanted to get out of the office. The pair clicked and Ava was curious about the man who was talking to her mommy. Little Ava didn't really understand what it meant for her mommy to be dating, the woman never left the little girl with a sitter and the three of them always did things together. When Ava was six years old her mommy sat her down and asked if she wanted Alex to be her new daddy. Ava knew her little friends had daddies and she wanted one, Alex was nice so she said yes. Within a year the couple had moved with little Ava to Sleepy Hollow, New York where Alex was from and started their family. Ava didn't understand what her step father did for a living, she didn't care. Ava was seven years old when her mommy and Alex sat her down again and this time they both asked if she wanted Alex to be her daddy. Ava replied with "but he already is" she didn't understand what they meant, to her the minute she said yes before that was that. He was her daddy, she didn't tell people he was her step dad, she said her daddy. So it was settled, Alex adopted Ava before her eighth birthday. Another big change that occurred the year she turned eight was the addition of her baby sister, Miri. She wasn't really sure what it meant to have a baby sister but she was told constantly that all she had to do was protect and love the little girl and all things would be okay. She took that to heart and spent the next two years watching over the little girl like a hawk. Ava was ten before she went back to Portugal. Her mother decided that the little girl needed to meet her family. While her grandmother had made the flight from Lisbon to New York many times over the years, the small family had never made the trek themselves. Nadalia had made sure both of her children spoke Portuguese. The first few days of the trip were awkward for Ava but after getting to know her cousins, Ava fell in love with the city. She told her mother one evening she never wanted to leave. Her grandfather only made that feeling stronger when he took her to her first football match, showing her what the sport was about. When she returned home to NYC she couldn't understand why she couldn't watch the matches here, why kids looked at her funny when she wore a Portugal jersey. But she didn't care, the little girl was nothing if not persistent and she had goals now of returning to Portugal. From an early age, Ava had been enrolled in ballet classes. She'd excelled in dance and it kept her body in pristine shape. When she was fifteen years old, that hard-work paid off when a local model scout spotted her at a cafe with her mother and baby sister. She was asked to come to an open call for Forever 21, they needed a fresh new face for their next season line. Her mother was hesitant, but Alex suggested that it couldn't hurt anything. If she made the cut, then maybe she'd make enough to attend college and if she didn't well, then it wasn't meant to be. Ava made the cut and she was one of five girls picked for that first shoot. Ava's life and career took a small pause after two years working with Forever 21, before she landed a job with Flamenco in Spain in 2007. She had been visiting family in Portugal, a weekend trip to Barcelona landed her with an Agency there and the rest, as they say is history. She's become a major fixture in Europe, not modeling nearly as much here in the states but she doesn't care. She enjoys doing runway shows during Pairs and Barcelona's respective fashion weeks, having also landed two spots in New York's fashion weeks. She has moved up enough in her recognition in Europe that she's landed campaigns here in the states, Guess, Beach Bunny swimwear and Armani Exchange among a few others. She's landed covers of national magazine's, from Bridal, GQ, Vogue to lesser known things. As far as she is concerned it's work and she loves it. Currently she's living in New York and has no desire to move. She flies between Western Europe, namely Barcelona, Pairs and Milan and New York City. She doesn't spend enough time in the other places to really see a need to move there, and enjoys where she lives and being close to her family. She has two younger siblings she's still very close to and usually makes it to a weekly family dinner.
