biography This child hailed from a rather unconventional setting: both of his parents were of the female persuasion. Lila and Catherine were going on four years together when they decided they wanted a child, and after a few months of discussion reached a mutual agreement that impregnation by a close friend would be the best—and easiest—option. The fate of the entire plan rested in the hands of the reluctant Declan, and over the course of a year this, along with Lila’s unwillingness to go another route, sent their relationship into a bit of turbulence and almost destroyed it completely. Declan eventually came around, and soon after the trio was doting on their first and only baby boy. Declan stayed in the picture, though only as a family friend and not a father figure. Throughout school he was teased, but it wasn’t until he hit double digits that Sid started to realize that his family was anything but the norm and why others couldn’t accept it. It was a confusing time in his life, only made worse when his mothers finally disclosed all the details of the real story to him. What followed was a period of questioning his life, though he’d never have admitted it. Where before he had been docile, letting the sneers and jabs roll off his shoulders, now he was defensive and irritable. He got into (and lost) his first physical fight in the 7th grade and earned a few more suspensions over the course of his teenage years. It took a couple years and a lot of self-exploration before he got his head back on straight and started acting more like himself again, but those dark days didn’t leave him completely unscathed. Sid focused on himself, his work and his dancing—something he’d enjoyed as a child but inadvertently abandoned during his little crisis. He took a few different classes, even, but never learned any style to perfection; instead, he preferred to take what he could get from a couple weeks and incorporate bits into his own self-taught style, something that could be described mostly as a contemporary hip hop hybrid. For the most part he was happy again, though not quite satisfied. When it came time to determine the next step in his life, college was the winning decision only because he had no idea what else to do. He chose to stay close enough to home to commute and ended up at NC State in Raleigh as an undeclared humanities and social sciences student. Sid cruised through the first year with as little responsibility as he could manage, blowing most of his savings on the night life and adventures with his new friends. With the third semester came the realization that he actually needed a job, especially when his parents attenuated their donations. It was a good change for him, even if it meant cutting his social life a little short, and for the first time he was honestly directing his own life. That little taste of freedom wasn't enough; he felt that if he was going to be independent, he needed to go all the way. This semester he is leaving the nest, transferring to a school a little further away and looking to live out of his parents' line of sight. He chose to major in Dramatic Arts at UNC, figuring it would just be something light and fun until he could figure life out, but he quickly discovered an interest in the technical aspects of theater and decided to stick with it. |
