"but you came around and you knocked me off the ground from the start."
biography in both zoey and jeremy evans' minds, krista sommers should have never been a mother. there was never any indication that she would be a bad one as she was growing up, and to her husband at the time, she seemed like a good person to settle down with. the twenty-four year old, at the time of her wedding, was a beautiful, leggy brunette, outgoing, though a little on the wild side when alcohol was introduced, but she seemed like a decent person. plus, as carl evans would later say to his defense, she was great in bed. and so, despite the age gap of five years and the fact that carl's parents assumed that krista was a gold digger, they got married in february of 1984. mistake number one. barely a month later, she found out that she was pregnant with her first child, a daughter she named zoey renee evans, born on december 11th, 1984.

from the start, zoey's childhood wasn't ideal, or perfect, or close to anything she would want to remember. she grew up in irvington, new york, in a fairly big house, and got little to no attention from either of her parents. she might have been the oldest, but she didn't stay the only child for long. zoey was barely three months old when krista found out she was pregnant again with her second child. jeremy was born on september 28th, 1985, just ten months after his older sister. the fact that krista was unable to handle caring for two young children became apparent almost immediately, and her marriage suffered because of it. her and carl fought a lot, and he spent a lot of time working rather than home. it was when zoey was four and jeremy was three that the problems really escalated. the parents were struggling with zoey's behavioral problems and failed attempts to put her into preschool at a young age, and the blame was being put on each other. the fights became more frequent, though they were mostly on the phone while carl was at work. krista became obsessed with finding out what carl was doing at all times, sometimes dragging her own children out in the middle of the day to show up at his office unannounced. the fights would carry on all through the night, until carl stopped coming home on some nights. the fights never became physical, but sometimes krista's anger carried over towards the children, especially zoey. and from a very young age, the little girl became the object of krista's ridicule, especially when the teachers suggested that she repeat kindergarten, leaving her in the same year as her brother.

it all came to a very dramatic end in 1989, when krista (finally) caught carl with a mistress. he had met her through his business, and had started a year long affair before krista finally found out. in a fit of rage, she threw all of his things out of the house (though he owned it) and exploded in a heap of angry tears in the middle of the kitchen, just in time for her kids to come off the bus and find her there, drunk and sobbing. carl filed for divorce, though what came as a surprise to everyone was that he didn't fight for custody of his two children. it was obvious that krista was unstable and not a fit mother for the two, but he was clearly not interested in raising zoey and jeremy. what the two would find out (years later) was that erin, his mistress, did not want children, and had no interest in getting to know the two that carl had. after a very messy, two year long divorce, krista got their children, the house, and quite a lot of his money, and carl got remarried just two months after the papers were signed.

elementary school was rocky for zoey. after her parents went through their divorce, her mother became even harder to deal with, and zoey started to act out. with both her and her brother being in the same grade, a lot of people started comparing her to jeremy, which never went over well. it was obvious that the two were polar opposites in every sense. jeremy was a good student, very gifted and a hard worker, one that hardly ever missed a homework or handed in an assignment late and always had good grades. zoey, however, never paid attention in class, acted out, was constantly in trouble and failed exams all the time. her teachers tried to push to have her tested for adhd or any learning disabilities or behavioral disorders, but both her mother and maternal grandmother dismissed it. there was hardly any discipline at home for zoey, and so she continued to act out. most people just wrote it off like a kid going through a bad divorce, and that she would grow out of it. she struggled in school, but as she got older, people saw that she just didn't care. she also struggled socially, getting into fights with other kids and was in trouble more than once in awhile for physical violence, but again, it was written off, as the teachers hoped and prayed that she would grow out of it.

by high school, they were mostly correct. zoey did grow out of most of her wild antics that she had with a child, but that didn't mean she did a complete one-eighty and changed completely. school still didn't matter to her, and she was still getting low grades and even failing classes. she went to summer school almost every year up until her senior year, and she didn't get involved with any sports, clubs, or activities. school related functions bothered her, and she wanted to get out of the building as fast as possible. during classes (when she showed up) she was mostly civil, and at least following directions and not acting out, and she didn't have any physical altercations with classmates anymore, so he behavioral problems were mostly dismissed by administrators and teachers. on the weekends and some school nights she was out, late, sneaking out and cutting classes, and by the time she was sixteen she was out drinking with her group of friends. they were in trouble more often than not, but nothing too serious, and zoey usually stayed out of the police radar. zoey relationship with jeremy didn't get much better, however. the two ran in completely different circles, were in very different classes, and just didn't see eye-to-eye on anything.

the only reason zoey was able to even get through school was because of two of her best friends. she had a handful of friends that came and went here and there, some that grew tired of her antics and others that ewren't allowed to hang out with her because of her family drama, and there were some that just grew apart from her. one of her closest friends growing up was emma morris, who grew up across the street from her and, despite knowing the drama from her mother, remained friends with her throughout the years. it was her best friend that was her rock during high school. the girl was her opposite but they had enough in common to stay best friends, and she kept zoey grounded and from getting into too much trouble. texas shipps, however, was her partner in crime. from a young age, the two were peas in a pod, very alike and always working off of each other, either getting each other into trouble or saving their asses. from elementary school all throughout high school, the two were glued to each other's hips, and even when zoey moved, they remained close. they leaned on each other through their terrible and failed marriages, and to this day, remain as close as ever.

by senior year, zoey was fed up with new york and just ready to leave. her brother was set to go to a good school on scholarship, her mother was acting up as usual, and she had just gotten out of a bad relationship with an older high school dropout. her grades weren't the best but she was able to graduate on time with her peers, and despite the fact that she had no college plans, she was heading out of there. just after graduation, her and her best friend packed up their things and headed across the country to seattle, washington. (FRIEND) was going to be attending college there, and so zoey tagged along, with the idea of getting an apartment together and zoey attending community college.

it was in seattle that zoey met mike hunter. he was four and a half years her senior and ridiculously good looking, and also an ex-con. at the time she had been taking a bunch of random classes at a local community college, where she found something she actually enjoyed doing: cooking. things hadn't changed too much for her and her friend (and new found friends), and she spent a lot of time at the bar. one night she met mike, and it was an instant connection. the two were not even close to meant to be, and it definitely wasn't love at first sight, but she couldn't stay away from him. the more time they spent together, the more it was obvious they were just not made for each other, but they just couldn't stay away. the physical part was great, but the fighting was even greater, and most of the time they were getting the cops called on them for the screaming matches. and then, at the age of twenty, zoey made the dumbest decision of her life. they went to vegas, and while they were ridiculously drunk, they got married.

the marriage only lasted a year, which was probably a little bit longer than anyone expected. mike had been working at a strip club as a bouncer while they were dating and married, while they lived together in a small, crappy apartment and zoey worked as a waitress. their relationship still wasn't amazing, and they fought constantly, and then it all ended when mike got arrested again. zoey found out it was because he was breaking and entering (with a weapon), into a strippers home, one that he had been cheating on her with. the stories were all messed up, and she heard all sorts of things (there was a sex tape, there were others, etc.), but it was enough for zoey to throw in the towel. she served him the divorce papers while he was in jail, serving his eight year sentence, and she packed up her things. by the start of 2006, zoey was moving back to irvington, her tail between her legs.

while living back in new york, zoey hopped from job to job, and her life was a roller coaster as usual. she worked in the kitchen at various restaurants, starting her job at the horsemen diner in sleepy hollow in 2010, which only lasted about two years. in the beginning of 2011, zoey started a physical relationship with ethan morgan carter, a friend of hers that she had met through mutual friends a few years prior. things started purely physical, but as usual, she struggled with forming anything romantic with him or letting him in. her fights with her mother and brother got more frequent, and zoey was drinking heavily. it got worse by the end of the year, around november when emma got married, and after the wedding, zoey spiraled out of control. she was drinking herself into oblivion, not showing up to work, and acting like a complete train wreck. ethan was trying to help her, but she slowly started to drive him away. with the help of her best friends, however, by the new year zoey was able to pick up the pieces of her life and start to get help. she stopped drinking, even after she lost her job at the horseman, and finally decided to see a therapist for the first time. it was a very steep uphill battle, but soon she was able to figure things out and calm herself down.

after a few months into 2012, zoey's life began to pick up. she got a new job at a pizza place in irvington, which was just a stepping stone for her. she was tired of making pizza. she was finally able to admit to ethan that she loved him, and that he loved her, and the two of them moved into an apartment together. things started to look up. now with her twenty-eighth birthday coming up and the promise of 2013, zoey has finally decided to make a career move, by taking a job as a line cook in an italian restaurant in sleepy hollow, called isabella bistro, that she got through a friend. zoey has no contact with her mother or her brother, and has calmed down considerably, still attending sessions with her doctor. she may not be perfect, but she's at least happy now.
