ABOUT CHARLEY
the baby of the family, charley was spoiled and indulged growing up in staten island. her father, a real estate magnate born of french descent, and her mother, an artist, were content to let their free-spirited youngest daughter do as she pleased. in turn, she respected and obeyed them, always coming home by curfew even if her exploration of the city had led her far from home. her mother's creativity and her father's experience in the world of real estate sparked an interest in charley, even at a young age. she would often tag along and explore the inner workings of the buildings - finding secret passages and hidden details, her fingers finding some intricate detail in the wooden railings or graze the floor as she laid on the tile, staring up at an archway. and her father fostered that interest, answering her endless questions about the way the buildings were constructed, how they worked, what went into making one. she was endlessly fascinated, and as senior year approached, she began to set a path for herself and a future in architecture.

she was accepted into the bachelor of architecture program at the prestigious pratt institute and immersed herself in her studies. it helped that her family was never more than a short train ride away. her studies opened her eyes to the aspects she'd been unable to get her hands on growing up - the engineering, the planning, the policies, the future. it was exciting and she truly enjoyed her studies. her family, a tight-knit group of four, supported her and made it possible for her to live in the heart of the city to take advantage of all the learning and educational opportunities it had to offer while easily commuting to the brooklyn campus. she even served as maid of honor in her older sister jane's wedding in 2007.

but in the fourth year of her five year program, tragedy struck her family. jane passed away suddenly in 2009 in a fatal accident, leaving behind her one-year-old daughter, ryan, and her husband, landon. charley was devestated. jane had been her best friend, her rock through thick and thin and she'd always considered herself lucky to have an older sibling she was so close to. she could only imagine the grief she felt multiplied by a thousand for her brother-in-law who suddenly found himself a working single dad with a toddler to take care of. charley was only too willing to help out her extended family, and the afternoons of babysitting turned into sleepovers and grocery runs and doing everything she could for the little girl that reminded her so much of jane. it wasn't long before she officially became ryan's live-in nanny, moving back to staten island from manhattan to help landon not only with his daughter, but the house as well. having suffered the loss of someone they cared so much about, and essentially co-parening ryan from the time she was a year old, charley considers landon one of the most important people in her life, as not only a brother but a best friend. in some ways, he and ryan have helped fill the hole left behind by her sister's untimely death. but she still wears both a silver star and a half moon around her neck. her sister had given the star to her on the eve of her wedding, taking the moon for herself as a symbol of their family bond and close friendship. now, charley plans to give the moon to ryan when she's old enough to appreciate what the charm means.

as ryan grows older and school means that she no longer needs a caregiver all day long, charley has toyed with the idea of returning to her architectural studies. truthfully, she's spent so much time with ryan that she's also considered returning to school for something else entirely - teaching, spurred both by what she's seen with landon's career and by how inspired and creative she found ryan to be. as someone who never anticipated wanting children of her own and subsequently becoming the maternal figure for her niece, charley has gained a new perspective on life - and her future.
