Dannie Claire Jonsson was born in Iowa in 1986. Her mother, Vanna, is Swedish and her father, Curtis, is an Iowa native. Dannie grew up in Des Moines, but moved to Providence, Rhode Island when she was fifteen and her parents separated. Vanna and Curtis were never married, so it wasn’t so much a legal wrangle for them to part ways as it was an emotional one. Dannie didn’t want to leave her father in Iowa, but Vanna had family in Providence and wanted to be closer to them since she knew no one else in the country who wasn’t connected to her ex-partner. Moving Dannie in the middle of her high school years seemed like a cruel, if necessary, punishment for something she hadn’t even done.

In high school, both in Des Moines and Providence, Dannie was far from popular. She had an interest in auto mechanics that her mother found weird and her classmates had varied opinions on - the guys thought it was kind of weird, too, but in an intriguing way, while the girls thought it was weird and frankly gross that she should have such a hobby. Dannie took auto-repair and electrical electives instead of the normal girly classes like those related to art or poetry. She didn’t mind getting her hands dirty. She never has, which is what women find peculiar about her. Working with cars ruins your nails, means you have to wear unflattering overalls, and is generally considered completely unfeminine. It bothers Dannie that she’s viewed as less of a woman because she can do what’s considered a man’s job and do it well. She feels like it should make her more of one, but how can you argue with mob mentality?

The only person who seemed to understand her fixation with cars and their engines was her mother’s new boyfriend, Steve, who knew a lot of people in the auto trade. He let her tinker with his car - under his supervision, of course - and took her to kart races as an observer. Dannie’s pretty sure that’s where her love affair with karts began, seeing as she had no knowledge of it beforehand. Her mom and Steve would split up a few years later, and she didn’t see much of him after that, but she hasn’t forgotten the man who helped nurture her obsession with cars and karts.

She graduated from high school in Providence in 2004 and headed out to Chicago to go to college with her best friend from high school, Monica Guerra. Dannie studied Physical Science at college, and the time she spent at North Park University was quite strange. She didn’t date, really, and she and Monica, who had in truth been her only friend and ally throughout high school, were studying for different majors and so didn’t share any classes. Dannie was left to fend for herself during those times she spent in class, and it was just weird not to have Monica around as her human shield. However, Dannie survived the experience and even enjoyed parts of it.

When she returned to Providence in 2008, she was more than ready to begin her apprenticeship at a local garage, the Tech Bench. Dannie still works at the Tech Bench today, although she’s an accredited mechanic now thanks to the mechanics there helping her learn her craft and hone her skills. She’s not sure that she wants to work at the Tech Bench forever - everyone’s got to move on sometime - but she’s in her comfort zone there at the moment, and she would feel bad about abandoning the family-run business after all they’ve done for her. It’s a decision she won’t take lightly when the time comes, but she’s not worrying about it at the moment.

Recently, Dannie started karting. She signed up to one of the races after buying a kart and having some help from one of the guys in the shop to do it up. She’s not great at it, but she’s only a beginner, and she knows she can get better with time and practise. One thing everyone should know about Dannie Jonsson is that she never gives up - no matter how much you tell her she can’t or shouldn’t, she’s not a quitter. Unless it’s illegal. Then, she’ll probably reconsider.

QUICK FACTS
• is definitely not the most feminine of girls. she’s not afraid to get dirty and she would consider herself a tomboy if she wasn’t just a little too old to subscribe to that description.

• is practically an insomniac and on average gets about three to four hours of sleep a night, five on a good occasion.

• is an only child, although she has a couple of half-sisters back in iowa.

• didn’t really want to go to college and wouldn’t have minded attending community college in providence instead of trekking out to chicago, but her mom and best friend were persuasion enough for her to go.

• sometimes thinks like a man in terms of relationships. she’s sometimes treated guys as though they’re disposable when they’ve wanted more from her, and although she regrets it, it hasn’t stopped her making that mistake again.

• other than racing or anything to do with cars or vehicles, she’s really not interested in sports.

• doesn’t smoke cigarettes or pot, or do any other kind of illegal drug - she doesn’t have a problem with those who do, but she knows that monica would kill her if she found out, be it by murder or just lecturing her to death.

• is very serious about her job. most of the time she’s a pretty free spirited individual, but when it comes to cars, just let her go and do her work because she’ll get frustrated and snappy if you try to tell her that she’s doing something wrong.

• is allergic to peanuts, bee stings, and suffers from hayfever. her mom likes to say she’s allergic to fresh air, but it’s not all that bad and pretty easily avoided - well, except the hayfever.

• her favorite band are coldplay. haters to the left.

• occasionally gets blindingly bad migraines. they come out of nowhere and she has to sleep them off for hours, and sometimes a whole day. fortunately, they’re fewer and further between than they used to be when she was a teenager.

• grinds her teeth in her sleep. it’s probably her worst habit.
