Background Info

One hot summer night in 1978, Evelyn Kirkland was having a girl's night out at a local piano bar when a young man stepped up to the microphone and began to sing. Christian Kimbrough's voice captured her immediately once the final note of Teddy Pendergrass' "Close the Door" was sung he was just as enamored of her when he spied her in the audience. In a word: sparks - in both a good way and not so good. Despite their rather passionate relationship, they married one year after the night they met. Six months later, just about to the day, Devon Elise was born. Two years, one divorce and a remarriage later, Kellie Janette arrived.

For as long as her parents can remember, Devon was always the take charge type of person. When she was little she had a neighbor that used to call her "The Coordinator" because she would always make play dates for herself and her little sister. She had a knack for remembering important dates which came to light when her mother let her have a little calendar book. Devon made sure she had birthdays not only written down in crayon, but she had them all memorized along with their favorite color.

From her early school days Devon didn't exactly like school, but she understood why (thanks to her parent’s constant speeches) she needed an education. And because she wanted to stay on her parent’s good side and set an example for her baby sister, she kept to the books. It didn't come easy for her but she did get good grades. She loved the social aspects of school much more; going to the sporting events, school dances and dabbling in student body offices. She even participated in show choir (she's a mezzo-soprano) in her junior year. As for popularity, Devon was for all intensive purposes, somewhere in the middle. It was actually her little sister Kellie who was the popular one in school and while there were many run ins with Kellie when it bothered her, for the most part the sisters were and still remain close.

Devon’s knack for coordinating morphed into putting together campaigns for a few student body and school court candidates in high school. When her sister was a candidate for homecoming queen, she launched a successful campaign and helped work on posters and ad work for Show Choir fundraising. This would later come into play when she landed a job working in the entertainment industry.

During her high school years, Devon's home life was rather turbulent. Her parents were on the outs again, and by the time she was a sophomore, they had separated for the third time. It was also during this time she came out to her family about being bisexual, telling her mother first. Truth of the matter was, Devon knew she was bisexual when she was in junior high. She was trying to find the right way to come out and it wasn't until high school that she felt she was already to say anything to anyone. Evelyn doesn't believe that anyone can be bisexual and she's still in denial. She thought, and still to this day thinks, Devon was having an experimental phase. When Devon was dating boys, she was pleased as can be, when Devon dated girls; she ignored the romantic aspect and just acknowledged them as a friend of her daughter's. Devon's father, although he's a little uncomfortable about it, did say she was still his little girl when she finally sat down and talked with him about it. Kellie accepted it and has even given the "don't hurt her, 'cos if you do I'll hurt you" speech to whomever she dates.

After high school Devon wasn't too sure what she was going to do but she looked at colleges in spite of being unsure. She applied to several colleges and universities and was accepted to a couple. She chose one that would keep her close to her family. Freshman year in college, Devon befriended Mollee Lucas and became close friends with and grew to know her family as well. Devon was thriving in the college atmosphere. She was focused in her studies in sociology and doing quite well in maintaining good grades. She even managed to have a decent social life and started seeing fellow freshman Amber Winston.

Her sophomore year, Mollee passed away after a long battle with cancer. While helping herself move on after Mollee's death, Devon got to know Mollee's younger brother, Kael. She could see how his sister's death was causing his life to take a dive and she was determined to help him through his mourning. When he almost landed himself in jail, she stepped in and started to invite him along when she'd go someplace: bowling or maybe just to grab something to eat. Sometimes she'd take him with her to a concert or along on an event she was working. She found by helping him, she was helping herself do on with her life.

By the time Devon was close to graduating, Amber could tell that Devon had developed feelings for Kael and he for her. In Amber’s eyes Devon either knew or wasn’t going to own up to it or she was just plain oblivious and sincerely was clueless. Amber stuck with her for as long as she could and when Devon started to focus more on work and studies rather than trying to work on their relationship, Amber knew it was time to let her go. Amber broke up with her and eventually Devon did start dating Kael. They have been in an on & off relationship for the past eight years. They’ve spent most of their romantic relationship dodging the notion of getting too serious. But deep down, Kael is the love of her life; she’s just too terrified to own up to it.

Watching her parents battling it out had a profound influence on both the Kimbrough children. Devon tends to subconsciously sabotage her romantic relationships. If things are going well for her romantically she tends to panic and tries to back peddle out. She’ll throw herself into her work and push the issue out of her mind as best she can. There are times when she feels as if she isn’t cut out for a serious on- going relationship. Most of her relationships whether they were with a man or woman have been off and on. Kael has been the longest in the span of time she’s been in a romantic relationship.

She remains friends with Amber who has pretty much become her closest confidant when it comes to her relationship with Kael. Amber has the knack of getting the point across to Devon in a way that she understands. Admittedly Devon had in the past on one of her many off periods thought about what it would have been to get back together with Amber again but she decided it was far better to have her ex in her life as a friend. She still loves Amber but she is no longer in love with her. It took a while for them to find their way back as just friends after their breakup.

She started working in a talent agency her senior year beginning with grunt work and for a little while she was a personal assistant for a "rising star". She found that she loved it and instinctively knew how to really keep her client on point. As time went on she moved into working on the PR team for the same client. One fateful night would change the lives of both Devon and Kael. While at a concert, she dared Kael to get up with the artist and go note for note, not thinking he would. But the next thing she knew he was up on stage matching note for note- and shutting down the house. The artist was taken with Kael’s talent and subsequently got a recording deal out of it. Dev got her first client as his official PR rep. She signed up to work with The Nova Group and has been there ever since working out of their New York office.

Facts
» She loves to multi-task. She feels out of sync if she doesn't have two or three projects going on simultaneously.
» She has the nickname Frau Farbissina from Austin Powers. It always makes her laugh quite loud. If she's in a really good mood she'll even do a spot on imitation.
» It's apropos that she LOVES Quincy Jones' classic "Soul Bossa Nova". Makes her want to break out and dance.
» Tries to make time to just not look at her iPhone for at least an half an hour. She's almost made it.
» Has her bachelors degree in sociology. She stumbled into her current job and LOVES it.
» Avid musical fan- stage or screen. Her favorite show currently is a tie between Next To Normal and Memphis.
» Loves photography. She is by no means a professional photographer, she just likes to take pictures of places, people and things that she finds interesting.
» Close friends with a couple of the ladies that work in the office with her. She's glad they have a job which allows them to work events together although not as frequently as she would like.
» Not a big fan of babies or kids in general so breaking out the photos to show how cute little Susie or Johnny is will not be an ice breaker with her. Unless they're in the business or children of her client's where she has to, she'd rather not deal with them at all.
» Is big on milk and cookies- chocolate chip cookies and a glass of ice cold nonfat milk is just the ticket. And yes, she does brush afterward.
» Is head over heels for Idris Elba and claims that he will someday be her "baby daddy" (Ironic since she can't stand kids). She has seen him at several events but has yet to actually meet him. This of course in her eyes is probably a really good thing since she thinks that if she ever did get the chance, she'd throw all professionalism out the window and become a blithering idiot fangirl.
» Ciara is her female counter part to Idris. She had the chance to meet her and yes, she babbled a bit.
» Thinks Twitter in particular is an entertainment publicist's "huge ass fucking nightmare". The time she's spent in the past year having to spin or "fix" some of her client's quotes on that website has made her job a millions times more work.
» LOVES Mike Myers films (her favorite being "So I Married an Axe Murderer"). They never cease to make her laugh. She realizes his humor is an acquired taste as it is with most comics/actors.
» Hair; laid all the time, nails/feet; did all the time, face; beat all the time. Get the picture?
» Gives thanks daily for TiVo - she doesn't have tons of time to watch TV but knows she needs to be in the know so she tapes a few shows and watches them when she can.
» As of now, her relationship with Kael is back on. This is not a publicly known relationship and only if you know the pair very well would you know anything romantic had been/is going on.
» She gets as ache in her left forearm which she calls a good ache since it happens when she gets that feeling that whatever is going on is going to go well. She likens it to a kind of sixth sense about whatever the circumstance is and believes that it’s Mollee’s presence. She hasn’t told this to anyone and the most anyone will see is her rubbing her arm a little when it manifests. Most times it happens she isn’t aware she’s doing it.
» Hates traveling, more specifically the airport portion of the show. The flying she doesn’t mind all that much as long as she has some gum to chew for her ears and a drink, she’s golden. Of course it would help her if she wore more airport friendly outfits but the woman loves the heels and being camera ready coming off the plane and hates airplane bathrooms.
