GENERAL GAMEPLAY ♦ GENERAL CREATION ♦ OLD SOULS/MORTALS ♦ DEITIES

GENERAL GAMEPLAY FAQ Q: What is your activity requirement? We require two threads per character every month. This does not count journal entries, text messages, emails, etc. Q: What is the current character limit? The current character limit is four per player. Each player is only allowed to play two Olympians at this time (but they may play as many lesser gods as they wish). Q: How are logs done? Logs can be performed either by a thread on the In-Character community. You can also feel free to roleplay on AIM, where it is simply sending your tags via IM. Q: What does an “Open Thread” mean? To place an open thread means that it is available for anyone to tag in. You simply put your character in a place where they can easily come in contact with another character, and any can jump in. Q: How do journals work in game? In game, the character’s personal journal is pretty much that. It’s a blog. All player characters can read the entry and the comments to it, as well as comment to it themselves. The character posting can filter or lock the entries (or parts of it) to either be private or filtered to one or more people using a filter (Private: Who it is open to). Q: What does it mean when characters say stuff in [brackets]? The brackets notate that the words within them are spoken or typed (as well as can be) of ancient Greek and the native language of the Greek pantheon. Q: How do ~~strikethroughs~~ work in the game? Any words that have a strikethrough are considered deleted. Q: How do I apply? Check out our Taken section to see the current cast, the Wanted list, the rules, and other game information. When you are ready, head on over to the Application page, fill it out (please remove the description information) and email it to the Mod! Q: Why do I need to post my application in my journal or userinfo post-acceptance? This allows applicants to look at your character’s information, as they may be applying for someone that has a relation to your character. You do not need to include your Player Information (there is a contact list that will house that information) or the samples. It also allows for current players to be able to look something up about yours if they need to. Q: How do I get my character(s) more active in game plot? Any time there is plot afoot that only may only immediately affect a few characters opposed to the whole game, the Mod will ask for volunteers! A brief note of what is required (such as specifically god or mortal) and you may offer any characters of yours that you so wish to. Q: Are these events mandatory? Not at all! It is entirely up to you if you decide to take part in the plot events. Be aware, however, that while you may not have offered your character, a plot event might affect your character depending on their relations and connections to characters that are involved with it. Q: I have one character and want another. Do I have to apply again? Yes. Every character requires an application. If you are already a member of the game, however, you do not need to include writing samples for subsequent characters. Be aware, however, the Mod does have a right to ask for one if they need a better sense of your character. Q: I already have 3 characters, but I want another. Am I stuck at 3? Not entirely. You can send an extra character request to the Mod. Just email the Mod with your name and your current characters and use the subject line: Extra Character Request. We will then decide based on your current activity throughout all your characters and get back to you. Q: How can I make sure I don't get called out for inactivity if I need a hiatus? If you know you will be gone and unable to post within the activity requirements for the month, or are just unsure, let the Mod know. We will put you on a hiatus list so that you don’t get tagged for inactivity. Q: I want to drop a character. If you wish to drop a character, please notify the Mod. You should also make an announcement on the OOC community to notify the other players who have characters that were involved with the one being dropped. Once a drop is submitted, you have three days to change your mind before it is officially dropped. Q: What happens to a character that has been dropped? Once a character is officially dropped at the end of the 3 day grace period, the slate is wiped clean. Past scenes are considered void, and continuing characters act as if the dropped character was never there. Q: Do gods of other pantheons exist? They certainly do. If the Greek gods are real, as are those of other pantheons. Many of them have been diminished in power much like the Greeks. Q: Who are the twelve Olympians? The twelve Olympians here are: Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Aphrodite, Ares, Athena, Hephaestus, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, and Dionysus. Hestia was originally one of the twelve Olympians, and in many sources it is stated that she stepped down so that Dionysus could take her place. We will be following that arrangement of Olympians in this game. Q: Is Zeus still considered the King of the Gods? Absolutely. That isn’t to say that there aren’t gods who believe that it might be time for him to step aside though the Greeks are scattered, but he still holds the title of the King of the Gods.

GENERAL CHARACTER CREATION FAQ Q: Do I have to apply for a god/dess? Nope! You are more than welcome to apply as a mortal! Q: Does this mean I can apply as an OC? Yes. Regular (and not reincarnated) mortals, however, are entirely your creation, as you have no mythology to rely on. Q: Can I play a god of another pantheon? No. The only deities open for play are those within the Greek pantheon. Q: Can I use a character from a game/book/movie/etc. based on Greek mythology? We prefer to keep things as accurate as we can to the provided mythology. Please stay with mythology characters. Q: Can I play all god characters? Yes. We do ask, however, that each player can only play two Olympians (the twelve gods who ruled after the Titans were overthrown). This way others have a chance to play some! Q: Is it okay to use a PB of a different nationality? Absolutely? Your character’s mortal appearance is entirely up to you. Q: If I reserve a character, are they off limits to other applicants? Yes, up until the hold expires. Q: Where exactly are they living? Chicago, Illinois. As to where exactly? Wherever you want. You are welcome to have your character move into a home of their own upon coming into Chicago. Another option is having them live at a local apartment building, The Blackwood. All characters who state that they live in an apartment will be placed in this complex by default. Q: Can my character run their own business? Yes! Please refrain from having your characters own something too extravagant (such as no owners of major store chains, but owning a local five star hotel is acceptable). If your character owns a business, we will ask for a brief blurb about it for our Location page as well as a note if they are accepting other characters as employees.

OLD SOUL/MORTAL CREATION Q: Can I play a mortal from mythology? Yes. Heroes and other important parts of Greek mythology are open to be played as reincarnations. Please see our information on that on our Gods & Old Souls page. Q: Can I play a mortal priest or priestess of a god? Absolutely! There’s nothing stopping a mortal character from worshipping. If the god your character worships is played in the game – they’ll be quite grateful for it! Q: Can my character be related to a god? At this time, we are not currently accepting characters that have relations to the gods. That means no mortal siblings, children, cousins, etc. Romantic relations can be developed during the game. Q: But what if my reincarnation was related to a god? Due to reincarnation and thus being born into a new body, the character will not technically be related. The old souls entering the game will not be fully aware of that fact. When they regain memories, whether or not they look to certain gods as their sibling is a choice. Likewise, the gods in question can decide how they regard that mortal. Q: Do mortals know that gods walk among them? Generally, no. Many people believe their gods are somewhere there with them, but nearly everyone is clueless that gods actually all over. The Greeks are not the only ones walking around on earth. There are, though, the rare few that have had encounters with some pretty weird individuals. Even some who could do magic. Q: Does my mortal have to be native to the Chicago area? They certainly don’t have to be! As long as your character is living in Chicago at the time of game opening, they could be from anywhere! Q: Does my old soul character know their history? In coming into the game, old souls are not yet fully aware of their state. You lose a lot of great character development that way. Some characters have no idea yet that they’re the reincarnation of an ancient Greek, some have a few memories seeping through, and few are just really starting to become aware of it. Q: Are their memories in tact when they get them back? Through the course of the game, being around the gods – even if they don’t know they are there – will begin to bring old memories out. Much time has passed, lifetimes have been lived. After this point the old soul (the mythology figure) doesn’t always remember every little thing, so there will certainly be holes in their memories and most often from the younger parts of their lives. Q: How are the old souls reincarnated? When the power of the Greek gods failed, many souls had gotten thrown into the cycle of life, as it were. Those immortalized in the skies fell, and those trapped in the Underworld had their second chances. Q: Are there any characters from mythology that would not be appropriate to become an old soul? If there is information to be had on the character, they can be played here. There are many characters mentioned in the mythology, heroes/mortals and gods alike, that have very little information given about them. It simply means that you have more to create on your own than mythology has created for you. Q: Are old soul characters affected by ichor? Yes. Just like any other mortal, old souls will die if they touch ichor. Q:What are Talents? Talents are little ability to those that bear an old soul. These are related in some fashion to the soul’s mythology. Each character may have one talent, and fully mortal characters (those not bearing and old soul) cannot have a talent. For example: A reborn Herakles, being a man of great strength in mythology, will naturally be a little stronger than his peers. Q: Do I have to choose a talent? Not at all! If you don’t want them to have their own little flare of their old life, you are not required to have one.

DEITY CREATION Q: Can my god start out with a mortal following? All Olympians, and Hestia, can be considered to have small temples in their homeland (a 3-5 devout followers) being that they are the most major gods. Many other names of gods are whispered in Greece and many other places around the world, so the other gods are not far behind that of the Olympians. A greater following can be formed in the game. Also, there are power days throughout the year (still celebrated holidays) that provide extra power days. Q: The god I want doesn’t have much mythology to work with. Can I make up my own? Generally, yes. Please identify in your application what parts you create. We may suggest small changes or tweaks in that information that we feel would benefit the character and the game. Q: The information for the god I want says that they are commonly associated with another god. What should I do? This is a common difficulty in mythology. Lesser gods are often simply associated with larger gods, sometimes described to be other aspects. Firstly, check and see if that other mentioned god is already being played. If they are, you can continue your application and simply treat them as if they are different figures. Another option is if one of them has very little mythology. If that is the case, please contact us before submitting an application and let us know of the two. We will look over the information and tell you whether you can combine them or treat them as different. Q: There are different versions of the mythology of the god I want. How do I know what to follow? If other characters besides your own are involved and they are played, please check their information and follow the version they also follow. Just to avoid confusion. If the characters involved are not in play, then you may feel free to choose the version of the myth you prefer! Q: The god I want had items of power in mythology. Do they still have those items now? The player is allowed to determine if they have their items still or not. If there is a shared item between two gods, you may say that there were two items, one for each, or you can follow their version of the myth. These items require much power to operate (such as Athena’s aegis or Hades’ helm) and therefore are pretty useless in the power department. Powering such items would be draining for the god unless they have a large following. Q: My character doesn’t have any powers mentioned. What do I do? Make them up! Base their powers, diminished, based on what happens in the mythology. If you need some suggestions, feel free to contact the Mod! Q: Can my character tell if another character is a god? Thanks to their ichor, gods will feel a little shock when they physically touch another god. Continual contact with that god will not have that effect, only lasting for the first few moments of contact. It’s like a little electric shock. Brief, not painful, but a little surprising. Q: How did the gods end up in Chicago? Some gods simply turned up here by coincidence. Some other gods felt pulled here by faith. Most characters can come into the game new. All characters have not been in Chicago longer than 2 years. You can feel free to have it be pure luck that brought them to Chicago, or are here because there is the promise of more believers or just another pull they couldn’t deny. Q: As they aren’t mortal and need to move around, how do they get identification? (ie. ID cards, birth certificates, etc.) For the sake of easy playing, they just do. We are not going to ask how they came across it, but you may feel free to provide the how if you like. Not every character has accumulated a fortune either – we will be keeping an eye on starting characters with too much wealth. Q: Do they have to have a job? Gods can be as lazy as they like, as long as they are prepared for it. Gods need to get money to function in the world just as much as anyone else. Not every god will have a huge stash of cash to draw from and most will have to suffer some form of employment. Q: Do godly powers work on other gods? For the sake of ease, we will allow the abilities of one god to affect another if the god on the receiving end is willing. That way there's not a matter of "well this will work but this won't" and is easily universal. It also should be noted that it takes more power to affect another god than it does a mortal.

MORTAL CHARACTERS
Mortals within the game are an interesting factor, as many deities are looking to regain their power. The faith and worship of mortals is what fuel that, so there is the element of attempting to gain this from mortal characters as well as from a few NPCs.

On a whole, mortals are completely unaware that gods walk amongst them. Some have seen others do things they can’t really explain and either they become a believer in the paranormal or they rationalize some logical explanation for what they saw. Very few mortals will be allowed to come into the game having knowingly met a Green deity of any kind (and it is suggested that if this is the case, that there is pre-arranged background between the mortal and the god in question).

Characters can come into the game with any personal belief they like. They may be Christian, Buddhist, Mormon, or any other religion. They may not have any belief in a higher power at all. They may also have a belief in the Greek gods and choose to worship one or more of them.

Pantheon Helenus
There is already a group of mortals of the Hellenistic faith active within Chicago. Members of this group are open for play. Many members of this organization have a primary god they worship but they revere all.

The head Priest and Priestess are not positions that are open for application. They are NPCs and players are more than welcome to note that their characters have been inducted into the group by either figure. Induction is rather simple. There is usually a brief screening process to ensure that the character is truly interested and not simply posing as a believer for whatever reason. That’s it. The temple is open to all visitors except on days of celebration.

OLD SOULS
Old Souls are basically reincarnations of figures from Greek mythology. Everyone from Orpheus to Herakles. In The Fall (as explained in the Gods section), the heroes that were placed in the sky as constellations fell back to earth and those that dwelled in the Underworld were, basically, kicked out. All these souls were thrown into the earthly cycle of life, death, and rebirth. These souls have been reincarnated hundreds of times over, sometimes never regaining the memories of their original life.

For most old souls, the memories are little more than brief flashes in dreams and feelings of deja vu. Being in fairly close proximity to deities will aid in the recovery of their original memories, both with direct contact as well as being in the same area (such as a city) as several deities. The memories will slowly come through, as more vivid dreams, thoughts, and feelings that may seem slightly alien to them. Sometimes such things are actively triggered by certain things or situations.

Playing and Old Soul
We are offering the ability to play heroes and mortal figures of Greek mythology though the old soul character. When creating and old soul, the personality and some behavior should have some similarities to the mythology character. This does not mean that you have to play an evil character if their old soul was evil; it just makes the recovery of memories a bit more interesting for this character.

Coming into the game, many old souls do not have much of any recollection of their original lives. The most many have had is within dreams of which they do not remember much. Vague feeling and deja vu, basically. Throughout the game your mortal will come in contact with god characters and the energy of those beings will being to awaken the memories of the old soul. Many memories of the original soul’s early life (such as childhood) will be entirely forgotten.

How exactly they come back and how the character handles it us entirely up to the player. The progress in regaining memories will be slow and never instantaneous. Some characters will be able to handle it well, some will not. At first it will seem almost like there are two persons living within the same body, each having different memories and feelings. The more comfortable a character gets with the concept, the easier it will be for these two elements to merge.

No matter which pantheon they hail from, the gods of the world are immortal. They once stood apart from humans as divine beings, long living and gifted with powers that mortals could only dream of. The source of these powers come from faith and the devotion of mortals. Sacrifices, prayers, and invocations fuel the gods. There are a few pantheons still i power from the cultures that did not wholly turn to the monotheistic faith that spread rapidly through the world. Many, however. have fallen.

The Fall
As Christianity spread throughout Europe, faith in these deities began to dwindle. At first the Greek gods held no fear of the whispers of a single God, truly believing that their power would be untouched. That was not to be. Over time their followers turned to this new faith and their powers began to fade.

The first sign had been the strength of their godly powers slowly diminishing. Each day it would grow a little weaker until they were no longer able to perform the feats they had so easily performed before. Even the mighty Zeus had difficulty wielding his signature lightning bolts. Hades could no longer power his helm of invisibility. Poseidon’s control over the sea was a mere memory.

Their home of Olympus was kept on the peaks of the mountain by faith as well. The city no longer began to shine with an unearthly light, growing darker as their own powers faded. One by one the gods began to leave their home, either to find a new refuge or to attempt to salvage faith in them. Attempts to stop the spread of Christianity failed. The last stages of their decline is what they refer to as “The Fall”.

The inhabitants of Greece knew it as a mighty earthquake that seemed to engulf the country. Olympus itself shook and began to break apart, pieces tumbling down the mountainside to become large pieces of strange debris the humans took for little more than rocks. The stars of the heroes places in the sky fell, tumbling down to earth where the shining souls joined the earthly cycle of life and rebirth. The Underworld also began to crumble to make way for what is now known as Hell, the souls within also forced into the life cycle.

Gods that had refused to leave home now found themselves homeless, forced to find a new place in the mortal world.

DIVINE ABILITIES
All gods have certain divine abilities in common, even in their diminished state of power. These do not need to be listed in a character application as it is assumed they have the following powers:

Blessing: All gods have the ability to place their blessing on a mortal. In the old days this would have granted the mortal a great gift. In the game, mortals who gain the blessing of a god gain temporary benefits based on the god’s domain.
Example: A mortal blessed by Ares will gain more strength and fortitude in combat for a short time.

Mortal Communication *Mortal Communication: When the name of a god is invoked verbally (such as “Zeus, help me”), whether purposefully or accidentally, the god will hear the words spoken. For a brief time the god in question and the mortal will be able to communicate telepathically and the god will know the mortal’s location. Unlike in their prime, a god must still reach that place by mundane means.
(Please note that many mortals, upon hearing a reply in their head, will usually think that it may be a sign they are talking to themselves unless the god proves otherwise.)

Shapeshifting: In many mythological stories, the Greek gods often change themselves into a variety of animals, plants, or to different mortal appearances. The gods no longer have the amount of power to accomplish that. They do have the ability to change their physical appearance (gender, size, hair color, age, etc.) which has made it easy for them to appear mortal and change locations easily. Please note that this does eat up much of their power and they cannot perform this often.

Power Pool
Major gods will have more power available to them than lesser gods. All of the Olypmians have a greater power reserve than their fellows. What makes a god major or minor depends on how much they are referenced and believed in in modern day. Major gods will appear more often in literature and media, have holidays associated with them, and will have domains that are believed in or worshipped.

How to I tell if the god I want to play is major or minor?
Here are a few easy questions to answer that. If you are unsure, please contact the Mod and we will help determine the answer.
[*]Are they commonly portrayed or referenced in literature, movies, or other media?
[*]Do mortals believe and/or put faith in their domain?
[*]Are there holidays celebrating them or their name?
(Examples: Eros, Aphrodite, other love gods for Valentine’s day. Still celebrated Greek holidays. Krewe of Bacchus for Mardi Gras)

PLAYING GODS
There are certain things one should know when playing a deity:

ICHOR: The blood of the gods is called ichor. It is a gold color and a bit translucent. Also, it will kill mortals on contact (including old souls). Mortals should not see or come in contact with this substance!
THE "SHOCK": When one god comes in contact with another, there will be a small "shock". About the same as a small static shock. Continual contact with the same gods will make this effect fade over time.

AGE REQUIREMENT: Due to the general questionable nature of Greek mythology, we are requiring that all players are at least 18 years of age. There will be mature scenes, violence, drama, and all that lovely things that the Greeks bring with them. Please do not apply if you cannot handle mature themes and are unable to scroll past NSFW scenes.

All scenes that are Not Safe For Work that are of the Rated R rating must be placed behind a journal cut tag and friends locked.

ACTIVITY REQUIREMENT: The minimum activity for is two scenes per month per character. Please make sure that you are able to make this activity requirement for each character you have before considering another. Each sub-thread within party/event threads will count as individual scenes. Journal entries are encouraged but are not required for activity checks.

Activity checks will be performed on the first of every month. Results will be posted on the OOC community and those that did not pass will receive an email. If you know you will not be able to make activity due to problems, please let the Mod know so your absence will not count against you. If you are having trouble coming up with a scene to do to make activity, contact a Mod and we'll be happy to help you come up with ideas.

If you do not make the cut, to be cleared you must email the Mod at alterlocusmod@gmail.com with a brief description of a plot you will carry out. It could be anything from your character meeting with another to something more complex. You have one week to post this plot on the IC community. If you fail to email the mods and/or do not post your plot within that time frame, you will be removed from the community.

CHARACTER CAP: The current character cap is four characters per player. Each player is allowed no more than two Olympian characters. You must apply again with each new character you wish to pick up.

There is the option to pick up a fifth character for those who wish to. If you would like a fifth character, please contact with Mod with your request. The Mod will determine your eligibility based on your current record with activity and completed scenes.

Please note that if you have more than one character and repeatedly have difficulty making activity checks, you will be asked to drop a character until your activity improves.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR: Nobody is perfect and mistakes happen. Please try to keep an eye on your writing, and spell check never hurt anyone. Do not type like LiKe ThIs and refrain from using texting and IM speak within your scenes.

NO SOLE SHIPPING: If you have come here to solely play a character with another in a relationship and don't intend to participate with plot and play with other characters, please look elsewhere. You will be expected to play with other players and characters as well as participate in game wide plot from time to time. You are not required to play with every other character in the game but if it is noticed that you only play with a select few, you will be asked to branch out.

NO GARY STUS OR MARY SUES: Yes, you may be playing gods. That does not mean that they are perfect! In fact, gods are some of the most flawed people out there. They have weaknesses and flaws just like any mortal character. Mortal characters are also expected to have their flaws and weaknesses. No children of gods will be playable in this game.

NO POWERPLAYING/GODMODDING: At no point will one player be allowed to pre-determine the actions or words of characters belonging to another player. You are only in control of your own characters. Your character can swing a knife and attempt to slash someone in the gut, but it is the determination of the other player whether that hit lands. Any major events that will have a direct effect on the characters of another player must be cleared with that player.

Any NPCs that your character may have, such as relative, are to remain NPCs. They are not characters that were applied for, therefore you are not permitted to actively scene with them. Very brief appearances are permitted.

Major occurrences such as a character getting pregnant or a rather large fight are to be cleared with the Mod before they occur.

We understand that as you are playing gods, they do have powers and can do things mortal characters cannot. Remember that their powers are diminished! There is a trust factor in that you will not abuse this power and we hope that you do not betray that. If we feel that you are abusing the privilege, you will be smacked with the nerf stick.

DRAMA! This is a Greek game. Greeks are drama. That is all in game, however, and we expect out of character drama to remain at a minimum. Keep in mind that there is a difference between character feelings in game and player feelings out of game!

We are all mature here and should be able to talk any issues out like adults. If things cannot be settled between players, has escalated, or you feel you are unable to handle a situation, contact the Mod! Thats what mods are here for. One warning will be given to any player creating drama and bad vibes. If that one warning is not heeded you will be asked to leave the game.

Chicago is both the largest city in Illinois and the third most populous city in the entire United States. Founded in 1833, it remains as a hub for industry, telecommunications, and infrastructure. It is a city mentioned often in plays, musicals, movies, song, and is a place rich in culture. It is a major city of theatre and the birthplace of modern improvisational comedy. When most people thing of Chicago, they think the windy city, famous pizza, and the mafia.

Currently it has also been home to gods, though many have come and gone in years passed. The founding of the Pantheon Helenus Temple two years ago still draws the Greeks to the city of big shoulders, and is keeping them rooted there. Chicago has everything one could need, and certainly remains a home away from home.

Chicago. The city of second chances.

Long ago, mortals revered gods. Different pantheons and deities existed in every corner of the world, worshipped by the mortals within their domain. For hundreds of years each culture had their own mythology, their own beliefs, and their own figures to devote their lives to. Gods moved among their followers, both bestowing gifts to their faithful and delivering their wrath to those that angered them.

That was until Christianity came.

The worship of one single god spread throughout the world and while many cultures did not adopt this new faith, many did, whether by choice or force. Greece was no exception to this and soon they world the Greek gods knew fell around them. Their world shattered and their powers faded as the faith in them slowly became a faith in God.

Gone are the days when mortals could believe that the gods walked amongst them. To many, the Greek pantheon is nothing but myth and legend. What many mortals do not know is that the gods are still there, still walking the earth among humankind. They struggle to find those that believe to fuel their divine powers, as without them they are not so high above mere mortals.

There are still those who pray to the Greek gods and there are those who claim to have seen them. There are also those who believe, but instead of worshipping these fallen figures, they wish to take advantage of their weakness and gain the powers of the gods for themselves.

In the past two years, a group of followers have banded together to worship the Greeks. A temple was build in their honor and it is this strong promise of faith that has lured many of the gods to Chicago. Some have come for family, some simply because they could, but many hope to take advantage of the power this group provides.

Belief in these gods it at its highest since their fall, whispering to the gods of another change. But will the gods overcome the obstacles and take their second chance to regain power?
