Preamble:
The first set of paintings you will see here are the 5 from my Squash series. Each one had a different requirement, but all of them are in fact the same subject: an acorn squash. All were done in acrylic paint, something I'm not horribly familiar with and are posted in chronological order by start date. The order I finished them in was: 4, 3, 5, 1, 2.

Squash #1: Monochromatic with dominate hand-
(I used my right hand for this one. Just starting to get the hang of acrylic and its insanely fast drying time.)

Squash #2: Monochromatic with non-dominate hand-
(For those who are curious, I'm actually ambidextrous. So yeah, no decrease in quality just because I was using my left hand here.)

Squash #3: "Whatever you want*" (*- assuming what you want is a realistic piece)-
(I was not supposed to have a gradient background, but I had already made it when the teacher verified that I was not allowed to do that. So she let me keep it since it was pretty. This painting features me learning how to schumble- aka smack a layer of white paint onto an already dry surface.)

Squash #5: "Whatever you want*, revisited" (*- assuming what you want is a realistic piece)-
(Not much to say here other than my snapshot photography managed to make the purple background look black. And that this is my favorite of the lot.)

(To remind the viewer that the squash was once a flower, I decided to paint all of my highlights black and show them these petals of darkness.)

Well, I almost have some paintings done. I'll have a grand total of six done tomorrow. And I'll post some images. Cause I'm awesome that way.

I did for the first time actually sit down and finish a painting that I started in class. I'm quite excited about that.

Its been a while since I've drawn some fanart. I've got a nice tablet mouse, two human drawing classes, and most of a painting class under my belt now. So here's my newest fanart that's being drawn on the computer mostly out of laziness.

Which should be compared to this piece, my second most recent fanart. Yes, he's on both of them, you might have to scroll.

I won't know exactly how far I've come until I get to the end, but I can say I'm off to a decent start this time.

Also, standing while painting for 6 hours straight results in feet that hurt. In case anyone is wondering.

I didn't have much issue with this one.

My favorite slice of life anime is:

Bartender. I love the concept of Sasakura running about, helping others through his insight and symbolic drinks (which are apparently very tasty).

I do have ASME news too. The conference (well at least my part of it) was last weekend. Click here to see what became of my event (which was the Student Design Competition and I was with Oregon State Univeristy).

I'll post a more detailed entry about my machine's misadventures later, right now I'm quite tired. Not surprising really, I've been sleeping very irregularly lately because of ASME.

Day 03- Your First Anime Crush

Vegeta of Dragon Ball Z

Which makes sense in a way as Dragon Ball Z was my first real anime. I didn't crush on anyone in Speed Racer at the time I first started watching it (I was too little to understand kissing, let alone a crush). Anyways, I have a fondness for men with spikey black hair and attitudes for a reason I'm not quite sure I get (Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho and Sano from Roruni Kenshin are notably on my crush list too). Realistically I don't think I could stand to be around that kind of person in person (mostly because I'd interpret their behavior as mean) but that doesn't change the fact I wouldn't like 'em in anime.

So I had a very unproductive contribution to my project, other than I was asked to attempt to make a part. Again. For the fifth time (needed to make two, failed first two, bunged up and got C- minuses on the second two). Mostly because one just looks like crappppppp. And yeah. I am not to put crappppp on the machine if I can help it.

Also, in another note, I read the label on my Zyrtec (allergy meds). Aparently I'm not supposed to operate machinery while using them.

...Well damn. Already done that. Multiple times.

*snort* And I'm about to do it again.

Why?

I just took a can of Canned Air and blew all of the dust out of my computer. It's running much better now (more quietly, quickly, and being more cooperative in general). Clearly dust is its enemy and its much happier to be running without it.

having urges to smack myself

So I tell people I'm moving back to my place and getting online again then I don't. That happens to be something I hate receiving so I'm very, very very sorry that it happened. Real life's been.... interesting to say the least.

Right now I'm working on my portfolio for entry into art school. I've been taking pictures like a mad woman and eventually I'll post some of the stuff I submitted here (so you can have a taste for what kind of art I do). Actually, I would appreciate feedback when I do get around to doing that.

Also, I got offered a house sitting job and since I kind of don't have personal spending money, I decided to take it. Which means I have limited internet access for the moment.

Then, on top of all of this, my ASME team decided they needed me pulling long shop hours to help build. Which means from about 9 to 5 PST time, I'll probably be in a machine shop busting my ass.

Yay.

Anyways, that's the outlook. I hope to be on again in the evenings regularly after this next Tuesday.

Until then, I leave you with this art piece teaser. This isn't the portfolio picture I'm submitting of this piece, but it's a good photograph because I'm in it and that gives you a sense of the size of the thing:

Its a steampunk found-object wasp made from old brassy lamp, chandelier, and other miscellaneous lighting fixture parts. This was made for my ART 291 Sculpture I class. It cost $128.74 dollars to make and me and my partner (she's the one taking the photograph) sold it for $400.

Its over!? The conclusion to the apartment maintenance saga!

Well- it turns out that white stuff on my ceiling was the maintenance they were supposed to do. It just took them an insanely long time to go forth and bother to tell me this.

Good news is I'm moving the hell back soon. YAY FOR BEING OUT OF MY PARENT'S PLACE!!

Not that I don't love my folks, I just want my space and my home back.

I'm not dead!

The last two days were spent avoiding heat (aka being too hot for my laptop). And re-reading lots of Mercedes Lackey books because clearly my love of the Heralds of Valdemar Series has not lessened in the slightest. Also, I talked to Kana (she plays Ganondorf on the Traverse Town RP we host on IJ)- and I think I've got her hooked on Heralds of Valdemar and Girl Genius. I feel win.

Also- on a completely different note- I kick series ass at Link's Crossbow Training.

Hm, man I sometimes wonder why people don't read the fine print with medication.

Birth control (the pill verity) has shown some pretty amazing side effects. Here are some examples of people I know personally's side effects: strokes, brain cancer, severe respiratory problems (i.e. not being able to walk up a flight of stairs because its as winding as running a mile), extreme hormonal instability (i.e. getting all of the hormonal crap from a particularly bad period but for everyday, all day, with/without the bleeding), and new allergies.

Vaccines have some pretty interesting side effects too. Cancer, serious immune system damage, new allergies, getting the illness it was supposed to prevent, poisoning, and allergic reactions. And no, Autism is not a side effect but having it does heighten your chances of having one of the more severe side effects.

My point: be a weary consumer. Just because it's all the rage does not mean its the right thing for you.

(My inspiration to post this was an interesting conversation I had had with a friend of mine who's mother suffered some of these side effects.)

Well I got around to finally catching up completely on my role play reading! Joy! I have always made a habit of reading all threads to see if there's one I wanted to join or not. Since I'm a moderator now, I feel I should be reading threads for the sake of moderating on top of my curiosity as a player. Not that there's a lot of moderating to be done (you RPers are pretty good about staying within rules on your own- yay!), but it is important to me, at least as event mod, to make sure people are actually following event instructions because I'm not just a barking kind of person, I bite too.

I'm the type that tells you I'll bite you before you I do it though as I hate being unaware of the consequences and then being caught by surprise when they are followed through. I don't mean to be a hard ass about it, it probably comes off that way though. I'm just very black and white about things because I hate miscommunication- which is a word ~~(go screw yourself spell check)~~.

In other news I scored some ridiculously awesome axles for my ASME project. Somehow I always find what I need for engineering stuff at the arts and crafts store. >.> No seriously. Speedball ink rollers are perfect for what I'm trying to do (light weight, pre-aligned axle, rubber gripness). It's so randomly awesome that way. My poor group leader is not going to like hearing I spent $45 bucks on them though. ._.;;

Somehow I seem to provide the more expensive portions of the device. While I don't mind this, it's always kind of a funny thing for me to think about. So far I've spent about $70 bucks for proof of concept stuff for machine version 4.0. Our team leader limited us to $100 each- but if my idea works.....

Then we'll have the blasted hopper problem freaking solved. Everything will be cheese and apples and delicious awesomeness if we fix that. The hopper system is what's really making/breaking our machine. Getting it to work opens up amazing doors for us, like the door to victory.

I did some research today.

The more I look at it, the nicer Rhode Island School of Design looks to me. I've looked at their grad school stuff, while the Industrial Design department isn't huge, the faculty are very high-powered, the program is internationally recognized. Yeah, it's kick ass. It's near my Uncle (non-zero chance I might be living with him as he has a basement he rents out and he's not too far from RISD) it's actually affordable because I could TA the undergrad classes in both math and in design (engineering design, BWAHAHAHAHA). My ASME stuff will probably get me out of the first 1/2 a year they require for this degree.

Anyways, I got a promise from my mom that I could visit grad schools next summer for sure. She also said the AWA trip tacked on would be cool, but funding my hotel and con expenses would be my own problem. Which suits me fine, I'm good at that.

In other news I had a hopeful breakthrough on my ASME thing. I know this doesn't fascinate others the same way it does for me but I really am happy about it.

You see the competition I am in is basically the NCAAA Championships of Engineering. Except its World Champion, not just National Champion.

There's $3,000 prize money for my team. $1,000 for my school's ASME chapter if we win. It's a big deal. I also get another plaque (already won one at districts). Winning that competition is a permanent resume thing.

So yeah. That's why I'm excited about it. I think its justified to be excited about.

I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World last night.

It was epic.

The entire thing was full to the brim of adorable video game references 8-bit sounds, getting experience points, getting 1-ups. The characters are lovable and their actions are over the top, just like everything else.

Anyways the premise is that this chick Romona has 7 evil exs whom Scott must defeat if he wants to stay with her. So he has epic battles. Scott's a nice guy, kind of lame at times, but still tries to be awesome. In the end of the movie everything gets resolved appropriately. The ending is kind of predictable, but the entire movie is full of witty humor and epic battles and random awesome.

Go see it, it is worth the money!

NERD TALK / RANTING / Stuff about the dog

For this entry, I decided to provide my expressions to what I am saying.

So I did ASME stuff, ran errands, and hung out with Queenie yesterday.

Okay, I'm explaining the ASME thing because I've been giving myself a headache trying to make it work. If anyone wants to ask questions or offer suggestions, please let me know.

And by ASME stuff, I'm referring to my machine that sorts aluminum, tin/steel, plastic, and glass by itself. You pour the things in one end and get stuff sorted out the other end in the other. Right now our biggest issue is the hopper, although our glass and aluminum sorters were kind of crappy in the original design and not quite accurate enough. Tin was the only thing that really worked 100% of the time.

Current machine: Hopper-Plastic sorter-Tin/Steel sorter-Glass sorter-Aluminum sorter-Unsorted
We start by having a prong-conveyor system (basically we have a little claw thing reach down underneath stuff and pull it out of the hopper and into the machine. The plastic sort is based on the size of the material (in this competition plastic is the longest by far). Everything goes into our small hole except plastic. Next, material falls through this hole to hit a guide bar that directs it right at the large rotating wheel with magnets on it. Tin/Steel is the only stuff that's magnetic and it gets caught and scraped off. If it's not magnetic, it just hits the magnet wheel and falls onto the giant, flapping, trapdoor thing we've got. Since Glass is much heavier than aluminum, it pushes the trap door down and falls into our glass bin. Aluminum is light, so it just slides down onto our metal detector. If metal, it turns and pushes it into the aluminum bin. If not metal, it just gets swiped into the unsorted bin.

There are many issues with the design, first of which is that stuff doesn't always come out of the hopper in the perfect orientation. Also, if the glass has a metal cap, it gets mis-sorted into the aluminum bin. And our glass sorter doesn't always trigger if the glass is light enough. So as a result, we're re-designing the entire thing. Hence the need for testing machines.

Good news, I got both of our testing machines to work.

Results: we now have a means of creating an accurate glass sorter (current one is 50%, new one would be 100-80%) and an accurate aluminum sorter (current one is about 30-70% (depends on how you look at it), new one would be 100% if we can get it to work in our machine). And we're pretty sure we lose about 80 grams if we do this re-design. Since weight is a factor in this competition, that's a good thing. Also, we think there will be a decreased overall sort time as well, which is also a score factor.

In case anyone is wondering score is 0 + 1000s - 1500m +100u - t - w/10 = SCORE (where s = number of correctly sorted items (max 12, min 0), m = number of incorrectly sorted items (max 12, min 0), u = number of items in the unsorted bin (max 12, min 0), t = number of seconds the machine was operating (max 300 seconds, min something >0), and w = weight in grams). So we need to make it sort everything correctly or if there is an error, it goes into the unsorted. Once we achieve that, we need to minimize weight and time.

Now at districts our machine was by far the lightest of the metal machines. It was not as light as the ones that were made from cardboard were, but it was plenty light. We got a maximum time penalty because our machine jammed (if your machine jams or for some reason you turn it off before all items sort, you get the maximum time penalty).

My team's priorities are to get the machine such that everything is either getting sorted or properly thrown into the unsorted bin. That way we're still getting positive points for every item in. In order to accomplish our first goal, we need to stop the jamming and make the hopper more reliable. We also need to get our glass, aluminum, and plastic sorters better.

And that's why the testing machines are giving us great news! That means we only have to worry about the plastic sorter and the hopper.

As for what the hopper does (and this is the HARD PART) we need it to take different sized containers and put them into our machine at a consistent rate and at about the same orientation. We cannot use our hands. It has to be a machine. If you can help with that, at all, in any way, I would love you forever.

In other news, Jenny McCarthy is an ignorant woman with power who is preaching ignorance and it makes me sick. Very sick.

For a start, autism is not caused by vaccines. They've done twin studies and all sorts of experiments testing this. Now, those who are autistic are naturally more prone to having side-effects from taking vaccines. Jenny's son (I did read her book) had his immune system trashed worse than that of an AIDS patient because of his hypersensitivity and intolerance for the MRR vaccine. So yes, the conclusion the vaccine messed up her kid is correct. The conclusion her son got autism from the experience is not.

Jenny, you are stupid and ignorant. Internet research is not always quality stuff and when there is so little real known stuff on autism, you're just looking at speculation. I've read medical journals love, you want to know what autism is? It's technically a physical deformation of the brain along with the lack of certain brain chemicals. That's right, your son's brain is deformed. And guess what? It was that way from birth because brains don't turn deformed unless you do one of two things to it 1) mutilate it physically (I.E. an accident) or 2) or have a series of strokes (which is internal mutilation). Your kid didn't have either. There is no way he would have lost the major neurons otherwise, he was born with them.

Also, your son has a gluten allergy and is lactose intolerant. Both those things are actually pretty common, certainly more common than autism. Do notice how you mentioned that those diet changes didn't seem to work with some kids in your book- that's because they aren't allergic or unable to process that stuff. Autistic children, especially when they are young, have issues handling certain chemicals or complex foods. I couldn't eat bran as a child, now I can. I've tried a few of those autistic diets and they didn't work for me. Or Queenie for that matter. Or anyone else I know personally with the autism.

So yeah, your son suffered a nasty vaccine side effect and has autism. Maybe if you paid attention you would have realized that your son's autistic behaviors are ones you have in you. I can see where my autism came from, I can see the behaviors in my parents. I can see those same behaviors in Queenie's parents and her. Can you?

That woman, I really, really hate what she's doing. She has no idea how horrible she is being. No idea at all. She thinks she's helping. Worst kind of ignorance, worst kind.

In other news I've been house-sitting for my folks. Which means sleeping in their bed with Jigger, the family dog. Now, Jigger moves in his sleep, he gets up and walks around in circles to make himself comfortable on the bed, he cleans himself hella loudly and does this on and off all night. This results in me -the light sleeper- not sleeping well. Jigger woke me at 6:10 am this morning to get himself fed and to pee.

At least he's a sweet dog or this would be more painful.
