They never had a Christmas party, and that bothered Bert to no end. He wasn't exactly sure why it bothered him so much, or why he felt the need to start the tradition, yet there he was, hosting an entire party of faculty members. It was held in the concert hall, something The Director probably wouldn't approve of, but given Bert's CURRENT condition and what he did at the beginning of the year to Bert, he had every reason to milk it for all it was worth. And that was having a party in the concert hall.

There were too many drinks, a deadly punch, hopping music, and dim lights that made everyone seem much too dramatic for what it actually was, but even as Justin Timberlake pumped on, Bert found himself only watching Alma out of the corner of his eye, who was eying the punch with suspicion. He couldn't help but smile. "Hey, Almie, baby, you may want to be careful with that. What if one of the kids spiked it?"

The wilting summer leaves that were quickly changing to autumn dropped sinisterly to the ground as Bert Bartok walked into Allegro School of Music for the first time in two weeks. Bert never spent this amount of time away from school, let alone the very first two weeks of school. The longest he had gone away was just a few days for treatment, but now that things weren't going so well, Bert stayed away for longer, undergoing the nasty treatment that the doctors forced him to undergo.

They had promised that there was still hope, that there was a way to make him better. Even when Bert didn't really care about the treatment, his family made him do it because he was too young to go.

Bert stepped on the lit cigarette that he wasn't supposed to be inhaling, letting it go out with a turn of his heel. Normally, Bert hid the fact that he smoked, but it didn't matter so much anymore. He opened the front door to Allegro, sliding through the door much more easily than usual because he had lost a bit more weight than usual this time around. As he stepped into his office, he closed the door behind him, paling when he saw a note from the director on his desk. Bert knew what this was about. Of course he wanted to inform the rest of the staff why Bert wasn't there; it was only appropriate that they should all know.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise; Bert didn't really want to be there when they all found out. That still didn't stop Bert from being angry that the director didn't ask him for permission first.

If there was one time of the day that Bert Bartok was not fond of, it was teacher meetings. And lately, there had been a plethora of those, all of which Bert was required to go to. Today, though, he had feigned "sick," and he had scheduled a student meeting for his Piano Literature class that was working on a humongous project so that he could approve ideas. Most of this humongous project consisted of Bert making his students do rather ridiculous things for him, such as go on an impossible scavenger hunt throughout Allegro. Hey, it was fun for him, right?

Bert had promised, though, that after this student meeting was over, he would go to the teacher meeting or see the department head afterward. Since the department head was boring and bound to talk to him for hours and hours and hours, Bert... didn't plan on following through. Ever. Not if he could help it, at least.

So there Bert Bartok was, dodging through the halls of Allegro, tiptoeing past the department head's office and sliding stealthily into the teacher's lounge. He breathed a sigh of relief as he shut the door behind him.
