Kael had been living with and fighting beside them for quite a while. He and Vernique enjoyed enjoyed the... benefits package she'd extended to him some time back.
While the little family was happy, Svalin continued to 'live like a battle-oriented nun,' as Vernique tended to put it to herself. One day, while Solver was out for the day with Sydney, Zoey, and Marlow, she managed to corner her wife. "I want to talk about something."

Vernique had had a rough day. A very rough day. Solver was finally to bed, but she was tense and unhappy desperate to feel like herself again.
Which made it all the harder to fight a longstanding temptation. Until she gave up, marching outside, where she knew he was, with her jaw set and her eyes clear.

It was a lot like Mom and Dad's traditions, actually. Where Dad had used telegrams and faxes, she used e-mail. Vernique told Jordan that she'd be in the appropriate area that weekend and would like to have dinner, maybe some dancing.

Vernique had been dealing with business in New York. Several functions of Nevell, with her about-to-be-debuted product line. Sigurdur had come along. She still worried about his fretting about things with Svalin.... and other things with Svalin.
At the end of the day, she brought him back to the New York penthouse. "You okay with ordering delivery food?"

"What is it, sweetheart?" Paladin was earnestly concerned.
"You still have your Kevlar on. At a tea party. There's a time and place, Daddy."
"Sorry, sweetie. I didn't have time to change."
"I can wait. Tie and vest, please. Ask Mommy if you're not sure about something."

She held his hand as they walked. The click of her new flats syncopated with the sound of his adorable new boots (Svalin had been of the opinion that Solver should have boots. Vernique had made sure they were adorable) against the sidewalk.
"Mommytwo's only going to be a in the meeting a little while. Now, remember, the man with the curly gray hair and glasses is Mr. Lloyd, and he's the one you need to tell that you want cocoa, and how many marshmallows. I'll tell you right now that it probably won't be as good as Jarvis's cocoa. That's because there's only one Jarvis. But that doesn't mean it isn't good cocoa. There's plenty of people in the Nine Worlds who are good at things but not great, and they'd rather somebody mention the first part of that than the last part. Since they still count, that's what we do when we can. So remember to thank Mr. Lloyd for the cocoa, and tell him if you liked it and just that, right?"
When he nods, she crouches a bit to hug him.
