Detailed Description: Ciaran stands at 6'3, has a slim build and blue eyes. His hair used to be black-brown and sometimes it still is, but he likes to dye it blond. When he's not got a mohawk going on he tends to keep the middle section of his hair longer than the rest so that he can fauxhawk it up. On occasion he drags a bit of rework creme through it and leaves it as is, but that only happens rarely.

He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck, one on his left arm (star) and one on his left wrist. He's also got his septum pierced, tongue pierced and has a lip piercing on the right side of his mouth. Occasionally he takes them out for a bit, but he always puts them back in before they heal up.

As for style, think 1970's punk. Ciaran has a lot of stompy boots, punk t-shirts and tight, scruffy jeans, although he tends to favour zip up hoodies over leather jackets. That isn't to say he doesn't have one (complete with studs), but it only sees the light of day when he's going out/off campus.

At school he wears a pair of ratty black converse. Since he can't wear boots, he almost always spikes his hair up to give him a bit more height. He always has a pair of headphones in him too; in school he keeps a pair of black WeSC earcans around his neck, which he wears the wrong way around so that they don't mess up his hair and when he goes out or off campus he has a pair of Bose in-ear ones.

Personality

Likes: Cookies, Left 4 Dead series, music, mandrakes, people watching, pencil drawings, Hungarian Horntails, peanut butter, silence, cats, Guitar Hero, sleeping in, solitude, nature documentaries.

Dislikes: Cheerleaders, written assignments, being a team player, books, lettuce, loud people, Avril Lavigne, anyone who doesn't like cats, videogames that involve playing soldier boy and gunning down the ethnic folk.

Quirks:

+ He's either ridiculously early for things or he's late, never ever on time.

+ Ciaran types out his class notes/homework/assignments, because his handwriting is completely illegible to everyone else. It's also full of spelling mistakes.

+ Being tall himself, Ciaran tends to go for girls at the Ginormica end of the spectrum. However, he's really into girls with small breasts; Ciaran can overlook height discrepancies for a cute little pair of Bristol cities.

+ When he talks about something he's interested in he becomes more open and chatty. However, he soon recoils into aloofness when the topic is changed. Unless he's drunk, then all bets are off.

+ He dresses like a punk, but he also listens to rock, thrash, metal, industrial, indie, grunge and erm, a little bit of emo.

+ Ciaran will DESTROY you on Guitar Hero.

+ He dyes his hair, he doesn't charm it. Dying it is easier for him.

+ His favourite person is his little sister, Una, who is six. He's very close to her despite their age difference.

Secrets:

+ He likes to sing but he can't remember lyrics to save his life. He's tried to overcome this by highlighting lines in different colours and remembering the image rather than the words, but it doesn't always work.

+ Ciaran is a huge fan of Prince. He almost has the entire discography on his ipod/computer (including soundtracks, instrumental albums and internet-only releases) and has seen him live twice. Ciaran thinks When Doves Cry is one of the best songs ever produced.

+ He'd rather say he's stupid than admit to having learning difficulties because he thinks it sounds like there's something wrong with him. Ciaran would rather be thought of as having sawdust for brains.

+ When he studies he has to read paragraphs out loud in order to take them in. He's managed to get himself down to whispering them, but if he doesn't hear what he's reading then he doesn't take it in. As a result, he does most of his studying in his room.

+ Secretly worships Anna Faris, to the point where he has a pirate copy of The House Bunny on dvd under his bed. He's seen a lot of terrible movies because of that woman.

What’s in your characters pockets? Money, ipod, keys.
Strengths: Bilingual, patient, independent, focuses on the things he's best at, musician, artist, Herbology, CoMC, isn't easily provoked.
Weaknesses: Poor academic, poor in wizardry, vodka, shuts people out, his foolish pride, draws in class, punctuality, has a tendency to be sulky, little to no control over his temper.
Strongest subject in school: Herbology, was Care of Magical Creatures.
Weakest subject in school: Latin/History of Magic/Potions. He's equally terrible in all of them.
One thing he/she can't live without: Headphones/ipod.

Detailed personality: Ciaran is a sulky loner, spending most of his free time either in his room playing guitar/trying to study or walking around campus/watching others. He's quite taciturn and he doesnt show signs of being flustered or stressed that often, even when he is. He often bottles his emotions, anger in particular, and so he's prone to having outbursts. These outbursts are short in duration, but since they usually involve hitting his fist against something...the fallout can take a bit longer to sort out.

School frustrates him to no end. Ciaran has learning difficulties (including dyslexia) and so an academic environment is the last place he wants to be. He still struggles in some of his lessons despite being a lot older than his classmates and finds spellwork to be a particular hassle. His skills in wizardry are quite poor and grades are consistently low.

Despite his academic failings, Ciaran is an accomplished guitar player, is learning bass and is quite talented at drawing. His main subject is people, and as a result spends a lot of time watching others and making sketches that he can build on when he's got the time. He's recently joined the art club too.

Ciaran also has a natural affinity with plants and animals. Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology are his best classes to date; they're the only subjects that he doesn't struggle with. Seeing these as his strengths, he's hoping to take the advanced classes in both subjects in his later years. He wants to work with dragons when he graduates.

Due to the events that took place at his previous school, Ciaran is rather wary of other students. He's reluctant to socialise with anyone outside of lessons, partly because of what they might have heard and partly because being around others makes him feel stupid. But he's getting a little sick of his own company now, and his considering branching out. He's joined a couple of clubs so that he can mix with other students. Whether he actually does is yet to be determined.

Anyone who manages to get past his exterior will find that he's reasonably nice, if a little misguided. He's never going to give you intellectual conversation, but he can be a loyal friend if he finds good reason to be.

Personal History:
Ciaran is the son of two first generation immigrant wizards, his mother being Irish and his father Bulgarian. He was born in New York and spent the first four years of his life there, living in a cramped apartment on the lower east side of the city. Then his father received an offer of a better job and the family moved to Nebraska.

His apparent lack of magical abilities led his parents to believe that he was a squib. They sent him to a muggle school in Omaha when he was five, which he quite liked. However, by the time he was seven his teachers were becoming concerned over his literacy, so his parents had him assessed.

He was found to have learning difficulties related to his reading, writing and arithmetic. After his parents discussed his options with the school he was given help in the classroom, which allowed him to better his grades a little.

By the time he was eleven, Ciaran's parents were no longer convinced that he was a squib. Having settled into his classes and made some friends, his parents were reluctant to send him to a wizarding school though, and debated whether the upheaval would be worth it.

They decided that it was, and so Ciaran was enrolled in Denver Wizarding Prep. The school year started well enough, but it wasn't long before he started falling behind. He was kept back during his second year, then again during his third.

Ciaran's group of friends spanned several grades, so being held back didn't affect him too much in a social respect. They were kids who looked like they'd enjoy being taught the dark arts, but they kept to themselves mostly, unless provoked from outsiders.

During the course of his school career Ciaran had several run-ins with students causing friction with his friends, but few of them amounted to more than fighting talk. Those which had were serious enough to be marked on his permanent record.

The first such altercation had been with a couple of Quodpot players who'd been bullying one of his friends over Charms homework. One of them received a black eye and a split lip for his troubles whilst Ciaran got a week of detention.

Ciaran's fists were busy again in 8th grade, when someone started bothering his girlfriend. He knocked the boy out and loosened a couple of his teeth, receiving a cut on his hand along with his punishment.

And then came the final strike. A boy from Ciaran's year took it upon himself to bother Ciaran personally. It started as an offhand comment about his intelligence, but when Ciaran didn't respond the boy pursued it, trying to force a reaction out of him.

Ciaran ignored it for the rest of the year, until the last week of term when he was called 'retarded' in the middle of Potions class. He swung around and hit the boy hard in the face with the butt of his wrist.

Despite being provoked, breaking a fifteen year old's nose in the middle of a lesson was not something Denver Wizarding Prep tolerated, especially since Ciaran was an older student and should have known better.

He was, however, granted some clemency. Instead of being thrown out, he was given a transfer to a new school in New Orleans.

Ciaran moved into grade 10 at the start of the new school year at Crescent City Institute. For the first term he kept to himself, keeping his headphones in between classes so that he was disengaged from the world.

Although it kept gossip out of earshot, it kept everything else at bay too. Ciaran misses his friends, misses having friends, and is slowly but surely coming around to the idea that if he makes a little effort with the other students then maybe this school will be better.

Maybe.

Ciaran slouched in his chair, working on a sketch he'd started in History of Magic. He'd decided back at Denver Prep that Latin was a complete waste of his time; a new school and a slightly less decrepit teacher wasn't going to change his opinion any time soon.

What was the point in taking it? Even if he paid attention it wouldn't sink in. His written work was awful at the best of times, but Ciaran could type that out. How was he meant to spell check Latin on Microsoft Word?

And even if he didn't have trouble getting to grips with the course material, it was still a terrifically useless course. Beyond scientific names of plants and animals and nolite te bastardes carborundorum, how much Latin did you need to know? Ciaran was willing to bet on 'not that much'.

After all, spells were only based on Latin. You didn't need to speak it properly to throw a bit of magic around.

Suddenly the paper he'd been sketching on was snatched from beneath the his pencil, scratching a deep line across his drawing. Professor Lattimer eyed the paper, throwing Ciaran a see-me-after-class look and approximating the same command in his pitiful dead language.

He waited until the teacher had turned his back and rolled his eyes. "Mama ti deba," Ciaran muttered, pulling a fresh piece of paper out of his textbook.

Nolite te bastardes carborundorum indeed.
