Lily sighed happily to herself as she took off her bloody plastic gloves. Luckily, this hadn't been a hard procedure; there was only blood on her hands because this particular procedure wasn't really a clean one. Whether one was a muggle or a wizard, giving birth was still filled with the gory details in between. But it was all worth it in the end, Lily thought, to see the looks on the mothers' faces when they met their child for the first time.

Lily wanted that. She knew she couldn't have that, but she wanted it. Remus and her had been living together for a few months now, and though they weren't married, Lily felt like they were ready to take the next step. Lily wanted to start her life was Remus; she felt ready. And somehow, she knew that he was too. It hurt her a little that he hadn't mentioned it, though.

Once Lily had finished taking off her messy garments, she put on her hooded sweatshirt and changed from her scrubs to her jeans. It might have been plain and muggle, but Remus didn't mind and Lily was more comfortable like this. She Apparated into the kitchen, smiling to herself as she thought of the look on that mother's face today.

Remus hardly flinched when the crack of Lily's apparition sounded, but he did look up from the newspaper he was reading in the sitting room. "Is that you, Lily?" he asked as he folded the Prophet and put it on the cheap coffee table, heading into the kitchen to greet her.

The smile on her face put one on Remus' in tandem, a small echo of her happiness. "Good day, yes?" he asked, leaning in the doorway.

She nodded and set her bag down on the kitchen counter, walking over and kissing him on the cheek. Still faintly smiling, Lily sighed, "A lot of happy mums today. How was yours?"

Lily liked to hear about how his day went. Even if the simplest of things happened, it put a smile to her face. She was trying to be as supportive as possible, knowing it was hard for him because he couldn't find a decent job. But Lily didn't mind working. In fact, she'd rather be working -- it kept her busy, and it was something she really enjoyed doing.

"I cleaned the kitchen," Remus said with a faint sigh, looking around at it. It did shine, but Remus couldn't help the slight frown of boredom to his expression. Staying home all day was wearing him down, not because he didn't think Lily could or should work, but because he was so bored in the house or running errands all day. But after his last job freelance writing for a cryptozoologist journal ended with the same dismissal for suspiciously timed sick days, there had been nothing on the job front for Remus, no matter how often he scanned the Prophet's listings.

He cleared his throat and nodded, looking back to Lily. "It was a good day here too."

She mirrored his expression as he looked around frowning, and suddenly she felt slightly guilty. But when he looked back, she tried to put the same smile back on her face, inconspicuous as she thought about the whole thing. "Yeah? That's really good," Lily said.

"Sirius stopped by today on business and we ran into each other. Told me to tell you 'hi' and that you don't talk nearly enough. I think we should invite him over sometime again soon." It was something they did. She managed to try to make him feel better, and they would forget about the fact that she had a job. Lily tried to help him, but he never let her. So she made up for it by acting nonchalant about it for him.

"We should, we should," Remus agreed, nodding. "He wasn't hurt, was he? Or did he just come by specifically to bother?" He smiled again, thinking of his old friend's antics. Remus moved out of the doorway and further into the kitchen, taking down things for dinner without hesitation. It was becoming a ritual between them, dinner and conversation after Lily got home.

She shook her head, coming over to help out. Lily was sort of a lousy cook, but she did whatever she cold to help him with the meal, whether it was cutting things up or setting the table. Never mind that she once made spaghetti explode everywhere because she didn't cook it correctly. "I'm not sure," Lily said, laughing faintly. "I mean, he said he was coming over on business, but I'm pretty sure he just came to bother me."

Remus laughed, setting a pot of water to boil. "He would, you know he would. I hope you ran him out before he started coming on to your patients. Sirius is the only one of us who will never settle down, never."

She snorted. "Don't worry, I don't think he would have the heart to -- after all, childbirth is kind of a scary thing to boys like him." Lily wrinkled her nose. "That may be true, minus Peter. I don't know if Pete's capable of that sort of relationship." She makes a slight face. She had the faint impression that he liked her during their years at Hogwarts, and it was a little creepy.

"Sure he is," Remus laughed, seeing Lily's face. "He just needs to meet the right woman. I am very encouraging of this." The smile on his face turned slightly boyish, sheepish, and mischevious all at once. "As long as it's not you, that is."

The face that she made became a little more pronounced. "Definitely not me," she sighed. At least Remus saw it too. "I think he has some growing up to do, and then maybe he'll meet someone," Lily said, twisting his words a little.

"He'll still be settled with a wife and kids before Sirius or James get around to it," Remus said, smile lingering. "Dedicated bachelors, those two. You'll see." He shook a little salt into the bubbling water before adding a nest of pasta to it as well.

She grinned to herself, nodding in agreement.

Lily leaned against the counter, crossing her arms as she watched him put the pasta into the boiling water. It's probably a good thing, she thinks to herself, that he can cook because she's absolutely dreadful at it. Her mind started to wander over to the hospital today and she sighed as she thought about how the two of them really should make it a little more permanent. "Hey Remus?" she askrf, not thinking about what she might say next.

"Yes, Lily?" Remus replied, turning around again as he waited for the noodles to cook. They usually ate simply, which made cooking and cleaning up simple enough to give them time to talk in between.

Lily took one look at him and smiled a little sheepishly, ducking her head as she wondered what to say. What was she supposed to say? She thought they should get married? They should go have tons of hot, passionate sex so that she could be a mother? Her mouth hung open a little, wondering what she should actually say before she looked back up at him.

"I want a baby," she said quietly.

Remus' mouth hung open. Whatever he'd been expecting -- that wasn't it. The little false-starts of logic show on his face for a silent moment before he could speak again, a stuttering, confused sentence, "You. What? Right now? With who? Not with me, surely, Lily..."

She nodded, pursing her lips because she was bracing herself for the worst. She knew where this was going. He would tell her that he couldn't, that it was too dangerous, that she shouldn't want to. Lily didn't want to hear it. "Yes, Remus, with you," she told him. "I want to have a baby with you."

"Why?" he asked blankly. It wasn't that he didn't love her, didn't want a future for them, but a baby? It just seemed so...hard. Dangerous, surely, with the chance that his lycanthropy could be passed on, but immediately Remus' mind was moving on from that, trying to figure out how they would find the money, where they would put a baby, Merlin they weren't even married...

Lily stared at him for a few moments and then ducked her head again because she didn't know what to say. "I. I guess I just. I." She breathed deeply and leaned back on the counter. "I don't know. I just. I really want to, Remus. I-- I think we should start a family." Lily didn't understand why she was suddenly ashamed of saying this. She knew she shouldn't; she's always wanted a family, but something about this entire conversation made her feel so small. Of course he didn't want to, she thought to herself.

Remus starts to realize that his reaction probably isn't doing the best job at comforting her, but he's a little too shell shocked to really change it. "With me," he echoes. "You want to have a baby with me, of all people. Lily, darling, we're not even married, could you imagine what the neighbors would think?" He has to laugh softly at the question, serious as it was.

She shook her head. "I don't care what they think," she sighed, still staring at the floor. It was as if she was slightly ashamed of what she was thinking, as if she were a child, frightened of getting in trouble. "I want it to be just you and me, Remus. I'm not saying that we should have a baby right now, just that. Well." Lily took a deep breath. "I want to be the one that you do have a baby with, if you would ever consider it."

She swears that her heart stops beating for a few moments as she stares at him, sort of incapable of words for the time being. When she finally pulls herself back together, Lily doesn't know what to say. So she says the first thing that comes to mind. "What will the neighbors think?"

Lily paled suddenly, thinking of that for the thousandth time so guiltily because she knew that it was a possibility. It didn't seem right to Lily. She couldn't help it if it did happen, but she tried to make light of the situation. "Remus, you don't know if it would happen." She shook her head. "And odds are, it won't. You weren't born like this, and typically, that sort of thing shouldn't happen if it isn't naturally hereditary or if only one of the parents has... it," Lily ended lamely.
