Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
It was the type of summery day that no one could ruin. In fact, it was such a perfect, quiet, still night that Lily thought that if someone were to scream at the top of their lungs, it wouldn't even reach anyone else's ears because this night was too perfect for disturbance. She laid on the grass in front of her house. Lily was supposed to have been in bed hours ago, but somehow, the time had gotten away from her. All the while, Lily was just marveling at the fact that just one day before, she had graduated from Hogwarts.

Excited, ecstatic, scared as hell, Lily sighed as she remembered that she still had no idea what she was doing with her life. She had made plans to become a Healer, but she had not yet filled out any job applications. Lily felt as though she were stuck in a transition period between adulthood and childhood.

And all the while, she missed Remus. Remus was always there to make her feel better and tell her what she should do. And yet, he wasn't here, even on this perfect night. So, disturbing the perfect quiet, Lily Apparated on the spot to the ledge of Remus's window. She rapped quietly at the window, not knowing whether he was awake or asleep.

He'd been sleeping. Not well, in fact, this sleep had been a hard fought battle to get there, and Remus had spent much of the night beforehand reading, pacing, folding his clothes, wondering how much to unpack and how much to leave alone. He knew most of his friends were already making plans to move out of their family homes, and Remus longed to be one of them, but without any money and without any job, his own prospects seemed very slim to none.

The crack of Lily's apparition made Remus startle, however, and come quickly out of sleep with a shuddering gasp, a racing heartbeat that didn't calm even after he saw it was her -- who else would it be with that bright red hair on his windowsill. Quickly he hurried to open the window for her, already ready with a lecture.

"Lily!" Remus said, allowing himself to speak normally since his parents were gone for the weekend, visiting family in the town over. They always left him the home alone during his -- well. "Lily, you've only been here what, once before? How could you think to apparate? You could've been splinched, come in, come in." He stepped away, gesturing to let her in. "An owl would've worked just fine." It wasn't that he wasn't glad to see her, Remus had to admit he missed her immensely already, but he was always the type to see things half empty.

Lily rolled her eyes, grinning as he opened the window for her. She jumped into the room from the window, sighing and giving him an exasperated look. "Remus, don't you remember that I'm the best at Apparating in our class? Besides, your house was easy and I wanted to see you now. An owl wouldn't have worked as well," she insisted.

After she thought she'd thoroughly explained herself, Lily took a step towards him, then (cautiously) another. "Did you not want to see me?" Lily asked. Another step. "Because I have to admit, I already miss you."

"Of course I want to see you," Remus said cautiously, watching her walk towards him with a funny mix of pride and affection he'd never experienced before. "I just don't want to see only half of you when you end up leaving limbs behind." He smiled, tiredly, before the expression passed. "Why aren't you sleeping? I somehow doubt you were losing sleep just over being away from me of all people for just one day."

Lily took a few steps closer, until she was very close to him, and then shuffled even closer, wrapping her arms around him, as if it had been her sneaky plan all along. (Which it had.)

Shrugging into his arms, she shook her head. "I don't know. I was laying outside on the grass at my house and it was too quiet. It all seemed too perfect, and I didn't like it because you weren't there." She pushed her face into his shoulder. "Is that bad?"

Remus was startled to find her in his arms so quickly, hardly even noticing when he'd returned her hug carefully, nose burying into her hair. She smelled like wet grass and he didn't know why, but he liked it. "That's awful," he admitted, a laugh in his voice if not on his face. "It's really just terrible, Lily, you're far too independent for silly romanticisms." If his lips ghosted over her hair just lightly, Remus pretended it was an accident. "But I'm fond of you anyway."

Carefully, however, he detangled himself from her arms, squeezing her hands gently as he stepped away. "But, ah, but perhaps tonight is not the best time for you to stay..."

Lily closed her eyes when she felt his lips against her hair, breathing in his scent for those last few moments of his embrace. "I'll be romantic if I want to be, Remus," she sighed when he pulled away. "It's healthy. Remember, I'm supposed to be more dramatic, right? I mean, isn't that what girls my age are supposed to be like?" She shrugged. Lily didn't normally associate herself with most girls her age or below.

As he stepped away, she crossed her arms because this was what always happened when she tried to get close. She was convinced that she would never get close enough to him. "Remus," she started disapprovingly. "Don't make any more excuses. I don't want to hear them." Lily tried to be adamant.

"It's not an excuse," Remus said, withdrawing a few more steps. There was a plead to his tone that he didn't quite intend. "I wouldn't turn you away if it wasn't important, I never would, but Lily..." He lost his words for a moment, before confessing, "Lily, tomorrow's the moon. It's dangerous tonight."

With the wolfsbane potion, there was little chance he'd be transforming early, or showing any symptoms other than his usual restlessness and jitters, but Remus knew he would never forgive himself if something went wrong.

Lily took a few steps toward him. "Right, tomorrow's the moon," she argued quietly. "So tonight, we have nothing to worry about. It's an excuse until tomorrow, Remus," she said, following his steps so that he remained somewhat close to her.

She wanted to stay with him tonight. They didn't even have to do anything, she just. Wanted to be with him, at least for a little while.

Remus hadn't moved far, but Lily's steps following him made it seem like he hadn't at all, leaving them still close in proximity, close enough for him to be able to reach for her again if he wanted. The temptation was strong, but Remus folded his arms. He watched her carefully in silence for a moment, hating the way his resolve was slipping already. "...Just tonight," Remus told her seriously. He would forcibly remove her tomorrow if he had to, she couldn't be there for his transformation.

At his answer, Lily smiled, unfolding her arms and instead reaching forward and wrapping them around his torso again. Pressing her nose into his collarbone, she murmured, "That's fair enough for me. So long as you don't kick me out in the middle of the night." She grinned into his chest, pressing her lips against him in one subtle movement.

It seemed like Remus would never get over the complete ease with which Lily fit in his arms. Automatically his nose went into her hair, breathing in. It was a bad habit of his to treat every moment like the last, like Lily was finally about to realize what she'd gotten into and leave. He wouldn't be exactly surprised, but it would hurt. "Not in the middle of the night," Remus promised, murmuring. "Just tomorrow morning." He grinned briefly, teasing, before it too disappeared in a flash.

Lily shook her head, pulling him closer because she knew that he would throw her out of the house. She would fight for it as long as she possibly could, though. "You don't turn into a vampire until the full moon, Remus," she countered. "We have the whole day." Lily tilted her head upwards, careful not to hit him in the face with her head, and pecked him on the lips.

"It's not that long, Lily," Remus said, giving her kiss back quickly. "After. After the moon is over we can spend the whole day if you want. Whatever you want." He nodded to prove it to her. "There isn't much to do here, I'm afraid," Remus said, shrugging slightly, "But we'll find something."

She shook her head disbelievingly. "There isn't much to do here?" Lily asked incredulously. "When have we ever needed stuff to do to enjoy each others' company?" Lily continued, reaching forward to press another quick kiss to his lips. It was a habit of Lily's; once she started these little kisses, it was incredibly hard for her to stop. She had a theory that it was because every time she kissed him, it reminded her of how much she actually did rather like him, and then it just went along from there.

"You smell like grass," Remus told her, before giving her kiss back carefully. He was still a little bit getting used to the idea that he could kiss her whenever he wanted, although the idea was growing on him considerably. Their noses brushed as he pulled away, and Remus smiled faintly.

"Yeah?" she asked, her lips curving into another soft smile. "Well, I guess that's because I was laying outside in the grass for a few hours before I came to see you." Lily leaned forward to kiss him again. Just before she did, she whispered, "You smell like you."

He smiled through the kiss without noticing, shuffling forward against her to return it. "Outside in the middle of the night? I won't tell you that's dangerous in times like these, but only because you should know, Lily." Remus couldn't help it, all he had was free time to read the paper, and it never was good news.

She shrugged, brushing her nose affectionately against his. "It was no big deal, Remus. It was just my front lawn. I can take care of myself." Lily brushed his words off quietly. "Besides, it was so quiet and perfect outside to be worried about anything at all."

"If you say so," Remus said with a sigh, letting his argument go. He knew there was no real arguing with Lily, and she had a point, Remus knew she knew how to take care of herself, but he couldn't help it. Being suddenly out in the real world made him worry more than usual. "Stay here tonight then, so I know you're not wandering the streets looking for trouble."

Lily grinned at him, kissing him quickly on the lips again. "I'm okay with that," Lily murmured against his lips. In fact, she had sort of been hoping that he would let her stay the night. "Who says I go looking for trouble?" she asked, pouting a little.

He laughed automatically. "Lily," Remus said matter of factly, amused by her pout. "You are always looking for trouble. Don't think I haven't noticed." Quietly, almost shyly, he tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear.

"What? When have I gone looking for trouble? I don't know what you mean in the slightest, Remus," she argued, her pout becoming even more pronounced. Even if her stomach did a little backflip when he touched her hair.

Remus' hand lingered by her ear accidentally without noticing. "Then forgive me, I must have you confused with someone else," he said, teasing just slightly.

She sighed a little breathy note against his mouth, loving the feeling of his hand in her hair. Lily couldn't explain it, but that hand in her hair made her feel so close and secure to him. Not wanting to move her lips away from his, Lily whispered against his lips, "Not dangerous." The words were muffled, but they were there.

"But it doesn't mean anything, Remus. It doesn't change you and me," she said, pulling away to look at him seriously. "You know that, right? Because it doesn't change the two of us. At all. Okay?" She was desperate to make him understand.
