Lookit that. I'm still alive.

We had this insane case go down, so they've practically been chaining me to the lab in Charleston until I give them answers. I swear, all I've done is sleep and stare at blood spatter for the entire week. Luckily, there's light at the end of the tunnel. I am so ready for this case to close, so that I can eat, and possibly scratch that itch that's been bugging my ankle all week.

So, the wedding was lovely. <s>They always are, no matter how many times you go through it...</s> Holly was the most adorable flower girl. She didn't wander off or anything.

Which reminds me, I should go get the pictures developed. Maybe tomorrow, on my way to work. It's not like the lab is full of fun and interesting cases right now. People always kill each other in the same ways.

Holly moves like a ghost when she wants too. Which explains why my front hallway is covered with small, purple handprints. As are my favorite pair of jeans, from when she came running at me when I discovered her new art project. I think I'll leave the ones in the hallway. It's a good warning sign. 'I have a child, proceed with caution.' <s>Or better yet 'I have a child, so don't flip the fuck out when I mention her halfway through the date'.</s>

In other news, Saturday night was another bust. Hooray.

Luckily, being one of the top in her field lets her getting away with wearing whatever she wants in the lab. For the most part. Any time she's at work, she pimps the white lab coat.

Personality

Positive Traits: goal oriented, honest, positive, calm, crazy intelligent, friendly, perceptive, objective thinker.
Negative Traits: obsessive, work addict, emotional, procrastinates, unhealthy, slightly pessimistic, can't maintain a relationship.
Strengths: level headed, lack of serious temper, physically strong, eidetic memory, bi-lingual (Spanish and ASL).
Weaknesses: her daughter, energy drinks, taking on too much at once, easily bored, isn't taken seriously, has two ex-husbands.
Brief Summary: Who is Dawn Bassler? Your first impression won't quite cut it with this girl. At first glance, she's definately quirky, friendly, and just a bit spacey. She smiles quickly, and likes nothing more than to make people laugh. She will rarely be totally serious, no matter what the situation. Her sense of humor can be a bit on the dumb side, but that's part of her charm, right? Some people might even think she's a bit dim. A nice enough girl, just not that bright.

There's an old saying that goes "never judge a book by it's cover".

Those that stick around, or take a deeper look, are usually surprised. Underneath that flakey exterior, Dawn is shrewd, quick-thinking, and very capable. She's incredibly intelligent. Genius level smart, with a photographic memory to back up everything she reads. She's also observant, able to take in an entire situation at a glance. Her eyes may be wandering, but that doesn't mean she's not paying attention. In fact, she's paying attention to everything, picking it apart and filing away anything that might be useful at a later date. For someone who looks so flighty, her mind is incredibly organized.

Overall, she's bright and energetic. She never uses her smarts to condescend anyone around her. Dawn is always in a good mood, always up for any sort of friendly conversation. She's the kind of friend you can go to at three in the morning for a little comfort food and conversation. She'd do anything, for anyone, at any time, and would only ask a few questions. So maybe she's a little too trusting, but she's not naive about it.

Family: Andrea Bassler nee Alkeinos (mother, age 60)
Elliot Bassler (father, age 62)
Lucas Alexander Elliot Bassler (older brother, age 35)
Ritzah Sofia Bassler (older sister, age 39)

Alvin Alkeinos, Sr. (uncle, age 63)
Yvette Rhodestvenski (aunt, age 45)
Maritzah Alkeinos (paternal grandmother, age 79)
Amora Alekeinos (cousin, age 27; )
Alena Alkeinos (cousin, age 22; )
Alvin Alkeinos Jr. (cousin, age 18; )

Tony Roberts (ex-husband, age 29)
Spencer Rourke (ex-husband, age 32)
Holly Adela Rourke (daughter, age 4)

Brief Summary: Dawn had a very unorthodox upbringing. Her mother was an advice columnist for the local paper, her father a veteranarian. That doesn't sound too exciting, but you have to consider her extended family. She spent nearly as much time with her aunt, uncle, and cousins as she did with her own parents and siblings. There was many a day when she was dropped off to spend time playing with Amora (who did not want to play), then with Alena and Alvin whenever they came a long. Lucas and Ritzah were a lot older, and though they didn't hate their youngest sister, they were far more interested in each other. Dawn grew closer to her cousins during her childhood years than she was to her brother and sister. She even looked like the other three, especially after she got old enough to start getting piercings. She shared the same love for body modifications as Amora and Alena. Dawn was even nice enough to let Alena practice on her, once she started apprintacing. Thanks to that, she has a few lopsided tattoo and at least one crooked piercing.

But that's just her history with her family. There's way more to it than that. As a child, it was immediately apparent that Dawn was extremly intelligent. She skipped a grade early on (from first to third), then another right before high school (seventh to ninth). Only a few friends stayed with her for the whole stretch. Most people were intimidated by her, with her crazy clothes and high IQ. She didn't get any real, lasting friends until after she graduated (top of her class, of course, even though she was only sixteen). Early on in her college career, she met Cassandra Deeley. They clicked, thanks to shared interests, both in the classroom and out. After a few years, they even got an apartment together off campus. Dawn was a real workaholic, but Cassie was one of the few that could actually get her to lighten up for a few hours and go out. Together, they had a real blast, and remained friends even after they left college. She married for the first time around then. Tony Roberts only lasted a little over a year before she decided that focusing on her education didn't leave any time for romance. It didn't help that she may or may not (reports vary) have been sleeping around with a girl from her statistics class.

Once she had her degree, she found a good job pretty early on. The crime lab in downtown Chareleston was more than willing to take on a bright, young mind like her's. Dawn was very, very good at what she did. The way her brain worked was perfect for forensics. After a few years, she was one of the top analysts in the state, though she passed over several opportunities to move on to a higher level job. She wanted to stay close to home. By that time, she was settling down with husband number two. Spencer Rourke stuck around a bit longer than the first. In fact, he was around long enough to get her pregnant. Unfortuantely for everyone involved, Dawn's job was way too important to her. She couldn't balance her time well enough. When her daughter was two, Spence left her, and took Holly with him. The two of them went back to their hometown, which just so happened to be her's as well.

She didn't follow for another year. Just because she couldn't maintain a marriage didn't mean she didn't love her daughter. The Island of Palms was close enough that she could commute, and still see Holly on the weekends. Plus, the rest of her family, and her closest friend, were there. It even helped with her work addiction a bit, to have to drive that far to and from the lab. Currently, she's living on her own (well, she has plants), working in Charleston, and spending her free time with anyone and everyone that she cares about.
