Frequently Asked Questions

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
If someone already has a character from, say, the Greek pantheon, can I have their counterpart from the Roman one?
 Short answer: No.

Longer answer: It's more like strongly advised against, because, say, Zeus and Jupiter are pretty much the same guy so it wouldn't make sense.

Addendum: It's possible though, under extenuating circumstances since there's nothing under the rules against it. It would just take a very good application and a note to the mods about it. :)
Can I play the Judeo/Christian god or Allah?
 Short answer: Nope!

Longer answer: No, because this particular deity is, essentially, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent which is a bit much. We like our deities (in the context of this game, of course) to have some human foibles. :)
Okay, so you've nixed having the Judeo-Christian God present, but would lesser aspects of the religions be alright in-game? I'm thinking angels/demons/saints, stuff like that?
 Short answer: It depends!

Longer answer: An extremely good case would have to be made for them as they don't really fit into the game world. However, the argument could be made for some saints/demons/angels who were correlated with ancient deities (like Brigid).
What about Cthulu?
Short answer: Let sleeping gods lie?

Longer answer:I really don't think Cthulhu or other Lovecraftian horrors fit within the game world, sorry!
What if I want to bring in a character who has some previous history with an already existing character?
Short answer: That would probably be cool, with caveats.

Longer answer: Talk it over with that other character's player first. We like existing histories since it makes the place feel more real, but something like that will need to be worked out ahead of time just to make sure everyone's on the same page.

And on that note: If, in your character's previous life, they were a deity with a [canon!] relationship with another character's previous life deity, it would also behoove you to make sure you and that other player are on the same page. For instance: Diana is the incarnation of Loki. Loki, in myths, was married to Sigyn. If someone brought in a character who is the incarnation of Sigyn, we two players should work out their shared history to make sure we're both on the same page in regards to how their relationship went because if I believe Loki truly loved Sigyn even if he was a jerk sometimes and the other person believes Loki abused Sigyn or whatever, well...that won't work so well, will it? Big point I'm trying to get across here: talk things out!
What if I want to play a plain old mortal?
 Short answer: Sure!

Longer answer:Feel free! The whole world isn't made up of reincarnated deities, after all! :D
Will you put a character/PB on hold for me?
 Short answer: No.

Longer Answer: Sorry, but I won't. I tried this for a while and it didn't run so well so all characters and PBs are now on a first come/first served basis.

New Short Answer: Yes.

New Longer Answer: We are now trying out accepting holds, however, you will be required to post your character's name, their deity (if applicable), your desired PB, and fill out, at minimum the character appearance section as well as one more section of your choice. Holds will be made for one week and you may be granted a single one-week extension. When making a hold (on the applications page) please make sure the subject line of your comment says HOLD.

Addendum: If a particular PB/character leaves the game, that PB or character may come up for grabs.

This means if a character leaves and their PB becomes open, a new character may come in using that PB. They shall not, however, be considered to be "identical to that guy who used to be around here" though characters may feel free to think that there's an eerie resemblance or that that guy just has "one of those faces" or something like that.

This also means if a character leaves and their deity becomes open, it will be handled one of two ways: if they were never openly known as being that deity, it doesn't matter if someone else comes in as that deity. If, however, they were known openly (by other characters in the game) to be that deity, there will need to be some explanation for how this came about. Whether this is by the previous character dying and the deity jumping into a new body (though this usually happens when a person is born, not afterward) or some other means, this will need to be worked out.
Do we have to RP in posts or can we do so in instant messenger or Google docs (or whatever), too?
Short Answer: Only if you want to.

Longer Answer:IM logs are all fine and dandy but try to remember to give opportunities for other/new people to join in too by making open posts for people to show up in. If you see an open post and have a character available who could plausibly be there? Don't be afraid to jump in!
Is there any particular format I should stick to when posting?
 Short Answer: Yes!

Longer Answer:Posts in the community should have, at the least, a general description of location and a general time of day/date that the thread is taking place on. For every character involved in the thread, please tag the post with their name! See this post to use as an example.

Further Details

SettingMetempsychosis takes place in modern-day Washington, DC and its surrounding area. Reference information for the general location may be found on this page.

There is also a page for character owned or related locations over here
DiversityBoth true mortals and incarnations of past deities are welcome as characters.

If you play a reincarnated deity, they never have to become aware of what they are. If people try to tell them they are this...they can choose to believe those people are nuts. Some deities are closer to the surface than others. Some are very well-integrated into their mortal host (The line between Set and Seth Mallory is nearly invisible) and others are very separate (David Matheson can transform, but he believes he's just a freak and has no idea about Raven).

Deities of any mythological pantheon may be represented. It is also more than possible that just because they were Greek or Sumerian or Norse or Polynesian or African doesn't mean that they have to be reincarnated into a mortal of that descent. Just because they were once male doesn't mean they have to be reincarnated male and vice versa.
AbilitySome remember from birth what they once were. Some never find out. Some come to this realization later in life, some earlier, it's really up to the player. Some may only ever have their memories and others may develop powers concurrent with the type they would have had as a deity.

It's possible, if a deity is "awakened" within the mortal, that they can recognize other deities in other people. This can range from just knowing that someone else is also a deity to knowing who, precisely, that deity is. Some people, especially if they don't remember what they are, might only feel a strange kinship they can't explain to someone they don't know.

Some characters may have abilities that follow along with the type of deity reincarnated within them. David, for example, can shape-shift into a raven. Some characters don't have any obvious abilities, despite what they are. Seth can't actually call up a storm (though he has an affinity for them) and seems to have no obvious powers though he does have greater physical strength than any normal man his size should have. This is an area that is greatly left up to the player to decide though common sense should be used.
InabilityReincarnated deities are not immortal. They age. They can die. They can fall ill. They can bleed.

No reincarnated deity character should have all (or even most) of the abilities they might have had as a god back in the Long Ago. David can transform (into one form and it's excruciatingly painful), but he can't "do" anything else. Alainna Sorosin can predict who might be victorious in a given match or struggle, but she cannot actually influence the outcome.

Rules

  1. They may be past gods, but there is to be NO GODMODDING. Basically: if you want to do or describe something that will affect someone else's character, make sure their player is cool with it first. This extends to NPCs and major landmarks (of which, you should talk it over with the mods, first).
  2. Think of the kiddies! Any RP with strongly explicit violence and/or sex should be taken to a character's journal under a cut tag with a disclaimer. Any of these sorts of scenes should occur only between two consenting players over the age of 18.
  3. You should be reasonably active with each of your characters. Meaning: A character should either make or be involved with a post at least twice a month and threads should be finished in a timely manner. They may take as long as they need to, but there shouldn't be delays of more than two days between tags unless previously worked out between players. No one's character should be left hanging!
    • Corollary: If a character is inactive for more than a month, that character will be written out of the story and removed from the game unless the player has previously asked for a hiatus from the game.
    • Addendum: To be counted for activity, threads/logs/posts MUST be made within the community. Things that take place in a character's journal or in an IM only will not be counted. If you do make a thread in a character journal you want counted (in the case of rule #2), at the very least a link should be posted to the community as well.
  4. All characters should, at minimum, have basic physical appearance information, background information, and a short summary of the deity they are the incarnation of, if applicable, on their userinfo as well as some form of contact information for the player (i.e. email or instant messenger information, preferably both!).
    • If you feel uncomfortable publicly posting your contact info, there's nothing wrong with making it viewable by friends only.
  5. Drama is frowned upon. If you have a problem with another player, try to work it out like civilized adults. If you can't, please take it to the mods for mediation.
  6. Lastly, the "elastic clause": the mods retain full discretion to administrate the game as they see fit for situations not covered explicitly under these rules.
