People consider stripping or gogo dancing an ugly thing but in a way it's sensual and made me feel beautiful again. I was happy when I quit and moved on. Neil Pasricha started 1000 Awesome Things to call attention to the little beauties and overlooked pleasures that we sometimes miss during our busy days. But what you may not know is that this hopeful project was born out of Neil's broken marriage and other tragedies in his life. What started as a personal search for healing became an award-winning Blog and series of best-selling books all from a daily reminder that even when our lives feel most troubled, we can always find some awesome too. #29 Going through the carwash with little kids #528 When your pet notices you're in a bad mood and comes to see you #852 The smell of the coffee aisle in the grocery store Neil surprised me when he told me this post was one of his favorites and the only one out of all 1,000 that does not end with "AWESOME" in all-caps. (I hope I find the right time to end PostSecret and do it the right way.) Neil's decision to end his ad-free Blog while it's still popular reminds me of how Bill Watterson ended his comic strip at the height of its' profitability because it was the right thing to do for Calvin and Hobbes. It is a truly awesome project and community. I remember waiting in line to meet you at a PostSecret event in Buffalo a few years ago and was touched by the humanity and authenticity of your PostSecret project. -----Email----- Hi Frank, I'm positive you get these every day, but honestly PostSecret has saved my life. Me and my mother attended your event in Rochester a while back... After the first few minutes of you speaking I got tears in my eyes... It was exactly what I thought it would be! That event gave me the courage and the strength to tell her I was sexually assaulted... Since then, we've gotten along so much better. The trauma I carried on my shoulders from what was done to me was heavy enough that I attempted suicide more then once. So thank you, but I wanna ask you to share something... April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and I can tell you coming out is so hard and sometimes seems hopeless but help IS out there!! And victims can get better!! Don't give up hope! Then I posted the secret above and again, I received all encouraging and inspirational words, and I wanted to thank you for giving me a sense of strength and sense of being to know I am not alone, and even if they are strangers, they believe in me, which made me believe in me. I am currently awaiting the second part of trial, and have no doubt in my mind that I'm going to go in there with this strength and the spirit of the PostSecret community within me. I want to thank you for bringing this to me and am sorry that others had to ruin such a beautiful thing. I just want to let you know that I made it, and that it was worth it. As soon as I put the postcard in the mailbox, I made a promise to myself that I would be there. I cried a lot and I didn't say a word to anyone, but it was nice to feel included just the same. A step in the right direction. -----Email----- I interviewed you before the PostSecret Event at my school. During the show you said that reporters don't usually ask about the secrets you receive about depression, eating disorders and loneliness...I didn't ask because I thought you might wonder...you would have been right. -----Email----- Dear Frank At the PostSecret Event you signed my friends book, looked up at me and said, "That's so beautiful". It was a surprise when I found out you were referring to my scar. No one ever said that to me before. It's a calcium IV burn from when I survived a premature birth. I considered removing it when I was 16 but later it helped my dying grandfather remember me. Thanks for telling me it was beautiful. We were taught to always be strong no matter what. I am not a really religious person but I know only God could have brought me back from my 2 attempts and I thank Him everyday. -----Email----- I worry that the desert storm vet in the email is my father. Best of the PostSecret App [03 Mar 2012|09:46pm] postsecret http://www.postsecret.com/2012/03/postsecret-app.html -----Email----- Frank, I'd like to share the good news that came from my PostSecret App Secret I posted several months ago. Six weeks ago I got the text of a lifetime, after five weeks of courage we finally talked for a couple minutes, awkward but encouraging. I am flying out to see him in five days to reunite after seven years. I still don't know what I am going to say or do when I finally see him but I am nervously excited. While it may not be smooth sailing ahead, I can say that I have stopped having nightmares, my heart is starting to heal and that my soul is finally at peace. I am now a firm believer that there's real hope for us all. P.S. I hear you'll be at my alma mater tomorrow. Sad it sold out before I bought tickets, enjoy the beautiful campus!
