Name: Kri'Stak, son of Tanas, House Duras
Rank: Captain (Klingon ranking places the rank of captain equivalent to somewhere between Starfleet's Commander and Captain) - Klingon exchange officer taking 1st Officer position aboard the USS Anubis

Family: Kri'Stak is on generally antagonistic relations with most of the hierarchy of House Duras.

History: Kri'Stak, son of Tanas of House Duras was born with a great many very bad omens occurring the night of his brith. Born at the stroke of midnight between unfortunate days, during an eclipse that his ancestors could not look upon his birth, pre-saged by a time of peace in his sector, when most of his household had fallen ill, his father, Tanas, a cousin to the Duras family technically of the house chose to interpret the signs that his son was to have an interesting life, and promptly named him not for any distinguished relative or legend, but instead for the volcano whose fires allowed the forging of the Sword of Kahless. Giving him a name indicative of his hope that his son would prove capable of being the sword forged from the hottest fires - the difficulties he knew would surround him, this would be the decorated warrior Tanas' last action before dying of the wasting disease that had struck the house.
Thus disadvantaged, born of a valiant warrior dead of plague, with no one to howl for him, Kri'stak survived his early days against long odds. He would go on to survive a difficult early childhood, proving to have an extremely dishonorable trait among the scheming Duras - he had no propensity whatsoever for scheming and duplicity, but instead insisted upon facing challenges with honor. Worse yet, he had a force of personality rare among the family but recalling the ancient heroes who had made their family one of the Great Houses in the days before Ja'rod. By five, he was leading boys two years older in the favored war games of Klingon children. It was not long after he began openly insulting his cousins, the Duras sisters, and challenging them or those closest to them to do something about it.
Ultimately, their father did - as a 'reward' for his impeccable honor and ability to flawlessly relate the saga of Kahless, Kri'stak was sent on a spiritual quest to the distant VoQuv sector and the Boreth monks to study. His education changed from the traditional to study with the fanatical monks devoted to the spiritualism of the first Emperor of the Klingons. If anything, this only encouraged him, especially when he was taken on a spiritual pilgrimage to the site of his namesake. Studying intently with the monks, he successfully completed a rare quest, forging his own bat'leth from the fires of Mount Kri'Stak, just as Kahless had done before him. While his family had hoped the monk's dogma and studies would keep him occupied until he had disappeared off the radar, and he may well have, but the monks who had guided him thus far passed on to him "Forging the blade is but one step. A weapon still in the forge does no one any good."
Thus inspired, and leading a couple of the lesser acolytes, he returned home to find the House of Duras somewhat in chaos, not everyone happy with whispers and rumors surrounding Duras. Disgusted by his cousins, and in no social position to challenge for leadership, he instead sought to bring honor to his family by attending the Klingon's officer training program, where he was discovered to be a reasonably good officer, but a great leader, naturally inspiring young Klingons through his earnestness, example, courage and honor. On graduating, his cousins and even Duras himself feigned being pleased to have the young graduate back while striving to keep him well away from records and archives. After yet again insulting the sisters as he had when they were young, and killing Lursa's boyfriend who came to her defense, it was decided something had to be done.
As yet another 'honor', he was sent to the officer exchange program, the youngest officer to do so, with recommendation he would be an ideal candidate to serve along the Romulan border - in hopes he'd be gotten rid of that way, or would slip enough to disgrace himself due to Starfleet's rules and regulations. On the first day of the exchange, while Kri'Stak was still in transit, Starfleet's officer exchange candidate disappeared - the ship he was on exploded, and thorough investigation turned up evidence he had been the only being aboard the single shuttle that escaped the destruction of the ship. The Romulans were suspected, but insufficient proof was found to make any such accusation stick. Secretly deslighted by the coincidence, Duras has used Starfleet's embarassment over the situation to insist on a longer-term transfer, to keep Kri'Stak aboard the Anubis until he learns the truth of what happened, at the least, though he remains officially part of the Empire's defense force, and the officer exchange program, not officially Starfleet.
