KENNETH James Towler

Portrayed By: Bradley James
Gender: Male
Nationality: English-British

Nicknames: He prefers Kenneth, can just about tolerate Ken, but call him Kenny and he will NOT be happy.

Age: 19
Birth Date: 23rd March 1978
Zodiac Sign: Aries
Birth Place: Keswick, Cumbria, England
Bloodline: Pure, as far as he knows. He can't rememember there being any Muggle relatives, though he supposes there may be some at some point in the family tree.
Allegiance: Although he works for the Ministry, and has ambition enough to progress through the ranks, he's becoming very uncomfortable at the anti-Muggleborn feeling exhibited by some of his seniors. It doesn't sit right with him and he would definitely 'disappear' to find like minded others before helping the Death Eater agenda.

Location: London, England
Occupation: A second year trainee in the Floo Network Authority (FNA).
personality
First Impression: "Oh look at him, he's not bad. Tall, nice clothes. Wait, is that Kenneth Towler? I didn't recognise him at first... he still likes to look important, then."

Positive Traits: Honest, charismatic, good in a crisis.
Negative Traits: Competitive, short tempered, a little egotistical.

Romantic Persona: Kenneth is unashamedly romantic, but not in the soppy, traditional way. He makes it clear to girls he dates what he thinks and how he feels, and spoils them because he wants any woman he's with to feel like a goddess. This usually works out pretty well for him, too.

Turn Ons: Jasmine scented perfume (heady and passionate), well presented girls (because they look like they've made an effort), girls just after they've got out of bed in the morning (therefore at their most natural).
Turn Offs: Lavender (reminds him of his grandmother), being too pristine (looks too much like a museum piece, someone who cannot be touched or, most importantly, rumpled), being snotty and dismissive of a bloke's best efforts.
Likes: Real ale, girls next door, being admired, dogs, a laid-back existence.
Dislikes: Alcopops, prissy girls, pranks, toads, disruption.
Fears: On a lower, more everyday level, he is worried about humiliation. He works hard so he isn't shown up for incompetence or other career-related downfalls. On a higher, more fundamental level, he worries about these rumours about an upcoming war, and the last thing he wants is for his family to become involved.

General Personality: Kenneth was a bit of a stick in the mud in his younger days. A stickler for the rules, as he felt this was the best way to make a good impression upon the teachers and other adults at school, he became Prefect in his 5th year (NB - I can remove this if it doesn't fit with someone else's prior app!) and was a sort of Percy Weasley "lite". From this point on, though, and with the stress of OWLs making him re-evaluate himself, he grew up into the young man he is today - a cheerful, charming and charismatic young man, who is sometimes quick to temper but has a good heart really.
Religion: C of E
Education: Hogwarts Class of 1996. Gryffindor 1989-1996.
Languages: None, but he has an odd whim to learn German. Just because.

Favorites
Color: Red. A bold, warm red is his favourite, similar to Gryffindor colours.
Food: Steak. Medium-rare - enough so it's a little pink, but not still mooing.
Ice Cream: Pistachio
Drink: A good old fashioned English Real Ale. Bottled.
Smell: Cut grass
Hobby: Wizard's chess, or cheering on his favourite Quidditch team, the Appleby Arrows.
Place: Keswick, because it's home.
Animal: Dogs, of any kind other than small, yapping varieties. He used to go out with a girl who owned a chihuahua - it didn't turn out well.
Music: He secretly enjoys Muggle indie bands such as Oasis, but usually says the Weird Sisters.
Season: Spring. Warm without being too hot, and girls start wearing pretty things like little dresses again, which after the misery of an English winter is just lovely!
Book: Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. But if asked by certain people, he'd say something by Bonécrit.

Strengths: Hard work, focus, theory.
Weaknesses: Vision, strategy, calm.

Mirror of Erised: Having his own office, with a big desk and a secretary.
Patronus: A wolf - a dog-like creature, strong and with capacity for great ferocity.
Boggart: A great, slobbering zombie.

NEWTs: Arithmancy (O), Charms (EE), DADA (EE), Herbology (O), Potions (O), Transfiguration (A)
appearance
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Height: 6'1
Build: Tall, with broad shoulders and muscles just developed enough to show definition. He looks toned rather than bulky and has the lithe build of a swimmer rather than the heavy frame of a rugby player. If he played Quidditch, he'd be a Chaser.
Eyes: Blue. Not too bright, not too dark. Just sort of ordinary.
Hair: Blond. Enough to be noticeably natural, rather than the pale white-blond some wizards have that looks like it's been bleached.
Skin: On a girl, his colouring would be described as English Rose. He's not too pale, but given the lack of sun, he isn't exactly tanned either.
Wardrobe: When at home, he wears the sort of clothes he'd wear at Hogwarts on a Hogsmeade weekend - jeans or tracksuit bottoms with a t-shirt, if going casual, or smart trousers and a shirt if on a date. At work, however, he goes for a more typically wizarding image - wearing a traditional suit (he owns three - one black, one navy, one dark grey with pinstripes) with wizarding robes over the top, usually black.

Distinguishing Features: He has a scar on his left hand, between the thumb and forefinger running down to his wrist. It was obtained when someone cast a spell in DADA back in his OWL year at Hogwarts, which missed its target and scraped Kenneth's hand by accident, narrowly missing the rest of him.
relationships and magic
Orientation: Definitely heterosexual. He has a laissez-faire attitude to most people's sexual preferences, but the idea of blokes to him is just... no.

Status: Single, currently, but for the right girl...

Past Love(s): His longest relationship was with Patricia Stimpson, towards the end of his time in Hogwarts. He dated a girl for a couple of months at the end of third year, and ended his most recent relationship three months ago.

Parents:
Edward Joseph Towler, 49, formerly of Gryffindor House. Edward is Deputy Head of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, having worked his way up since joining the DMAC right out of Hogwarts. His relationship with Kenneth isn't especially close, but as his only son their relationship is cordial and they have each other's best interests at heart. They enjoy each other's company and regularly meet up for lunch whilst at the Ministry.

Miranda Jessica Towler, née Bateman, 48, formerly of Ravenclaw House. Miranda works in the Wizengamot Administration Services as a rune-translator. She is one of the small translation team whose job it is to organise evidence in a manner that is convenient for the fifty-strong Wizengamot to understand during trials. Kenneth is more of a mother's boy than he will admit, and he secretly enjoys being fussed over by her.

Siblings:
Gwendolyn Miranda Towler, 21, formerly of Gryffindor House. Gwendolyn, or Gwen, is the eldest of the Towler children. She and Kenneth are closest in age and get along well, being friends as well as siblings. She graduated last year from a traineeship in the DIMR, where she works as an interpreter, having inherited their mother's gift for languages. She has a boyfriend whom she met through work, and is hopeful that there will be wedding bells before too long.

Magdalena 'Magda' Janine Towler, 15, currently of Gryffindor House. Much younger than Gwen and Kenneth, Magda is about to begin her fifth year at Hogwarts. Due to the age gap she has less in common with her elder siblings, but nontheless they are very protective of her. She is bright, bubbly and known to most people in school, never mind her house or year.

Emmeline 'Emmy' Jane Towler and Daisy Julia Towler, 13, currently of Hufflepuff House. The twins, being the youngest and final members of the Towler family due to Miranda's age at their birth (she had no wish to be an older mother, so at 35 felt that her fourth pregnancy should be her last), are babied and spoiled rotten by the rest of the family. They're tougher than they look, though, and have a core of steel that is quite unexpected for two girls so sweet and innocent looking. Kenneth thinks they are brilliant as a result.

Relatives: TBD

Friends: Kenneth will have got on well with all of his contemporaries at school, with the possible exception of Fred and George Weasley due to the time they put Bulbadox powder in his pyjamas. He hasn't quite forgiven them for that, but he would be cordial and polite if they met again.

Acquaintances: TBD

Enemies: TBD He won't be openly hostile towards anyone - where's the fun in that? - unless they've been hostile to him or his family first. He's not a fan of the Death Eaters, though.

Pets: He has a Boxer called Jeremy. He figures that owls are nice enough, but he's not bothered enough to have one of his own.
Wand: Ash, 14 inches with Kelpie Mane core.

House:
The Gryffindor Aries is extremely idealistic, and has a tendency to fight hard for many causes - the more lost, the better. Gryffindors born under this sign will also have very short fuses, and can be expected to fight regularly with other students, over ethical questions or over anything else that makes a good excuse. Since Mars is a planet that encourages war games and competition and bursts of hard physical activity, there may be many Quidditch players born under these aspects. A Gryffindor Aries is an open book; a truth potion would never be needed on one, because they are hopelessly honest and open. These wizards will display uncanny charisma and leadership ability, and will be among the most popular within their class.

Kenneth is one of those wizards who did not appear to be well matched with his house after his sorting. At the time he seemed too gentle natured and anti-conflict to fit well with the historic traits of Godric Gryffindor's House, but after a few years he blossomed and grew into them. He is a lover, not a fighter, but when pushed to fight he is brave and prepared to make sacrifices where necessary. He has quite a quick temper and in that way can seem intolerant, but more often than not it is just a case of his need to let off steam.

Secondary House:
A Slytherin Aries is a bundle of contradictions. In some ways, they have the potential to be the strongest of their House - the intensity, drive, and brilliant visionary dreams of the Aries combined with the innate leadership skills, the charisma, and the profound sense of self (including the eccentric lack of interest in conforming to what other people think) is stuff of which great magical legends are made. However, a Slytherin Aries has much to learn about politics, knowing who is an appropriate object of trust and who is not trustworthy, knowing when to keep one's mouth shut, and knowing when to avoid acting on impulse in order to use a situation to its best advantage. Although they hate to admit it, these Slytherins are easily manipulated by more cynical, shrewd peers in the Serpent's Den. If they can learn to manage their blind spots, they will go far. Slytherin Aries types can be quite cruel, especially if they have enough physical prowess to bully smaller students; those that are not cruel can still be thoughtless and brutally tactless without actually meaning to cause damage.

If one is unsure as to how one can be so equally balanced between Gryffindor and Slytherin, you could be pointed in the direction of either Percy Weasley or Kenneth Towler. While Percy Weasley's ambition led him to sever himself from his family, however, Kenneth's ambition is for his family as well as himself, one of the main reasons that the Hat rejected the Green and Silver house in the end. Kenneth is not to be underestimated, though. He can be cunning when it serves his own needs, and is capable of holding bitter grudges, though he usually has the sense to keep them hidden.

Year: 1989-1996

Best Subject: Arithmancy and Potions. The two subjects, a sort of equivalent to Maths and Chemistry, work well together for the purposes of his job, which involves being able to manage the mechanics of the Floo Network.

Worst Subject: Divination. He thought the subject interesting, but he could just never get anything from the more practical methods such as the crystal ball... it was his knowledge of more theoretical methods that got him through his OWL with an A.
history
Kenneth James Towler was born at 6 in the morning on an unusually cold March day. Spring should well and truly have been on the way, but when Kenneth arrived, the fields around his small Cumbrian home town were dusted with frost and the fire was going in the spare bedroom where his mother gave birth to him. It was a small country cottage - at least by the fact that his parents had five children over the years so there was constantly need for more room. Many of his early memories involved the clatter and bangs of spellwork on wood as extensions were added in order to accomodate the growing family.

Kenneth's mother, Miranda Bateman, was 19 and not long out of Hogwarts when she met her future husband at the Ministry of Magic. She was a new recruit in the Wizengamot Administration Service, he was a year older and in his training at the DMAC as part of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. On her way to the office for the first day, she had become lost in the many corridors and lifts within the building, and to make matters worse, when she finally got into the correct lift, it broke down. Luckily, Edward Towler was passing with his colleagues, and he helped to get her out, directing her to the right floor just in time for her to sign in. Ever grateful, she agreed to a date, and the couple have been together ever since.

Married a year and a half after their first meeting, given the usual standards of magical couples, it was expected that they would settle down and have children almost immediately. However, it was their ideal to have a settled family home before having the actual family, and it was six and a half years before their first child, Gwendolyn, was born. By this point they had the family home in Keswick, near her parents, as well as an overnight flat in London as part of their property portfolio. It made career and family a much easier pair to balance.

Miranda and Edward were delighted to welcome Kenneth, their first and only son, two years later. After a gap in which they got further into their respective careers and debated the future of their family, three more daughters were born, including a set of twins. Kenneth has always felt somewhat cherished as a result, and he feels lucky that he isn't coddled. Either it hasn't occurred to his parents that he is the only heir to a pureblood family, or they simply aren't too bothered. Kenneth suspects the latter.

He had a fairly ordinary time growing up, by magical standards at least. He was nine when Gwen went to Hogwarts, and was insanely jealous of what he perceived to be her exciting adventures that she wrote home about. Instead, he was tutored at home by one of the other local witches. He and his seven year old sister Magda joined other children at different wizarding homes in turn to receive a basic education in the wizarding world and the Muggle one, so that they would not be vulerable when the headed out into a world that was likely not their own.

He was, however, quite certain by now that he was definitely a wizard. At the age of six, he had been out with his family in the park when a Muggle boy called him a 'freak', being the only boy in his group. Instead of pointing out to the lad that he was an idiot and these were his sisters, he glared so hard at him that his rival's rucksack exploded, sending his toys and books sprawling over the lawn. He always felt protective of his sisters, even Gwen, and when his letter finally came two years later, he promised to write to Magda and the twins - now aged nine and seven respectively - at least every week. This is a habit he has kept up until the present day, as he feels a sort of responsibility to keep them safe and secure. If he feels relied upon, he is going to keep his promises.

His first year, 1989-1990, was fairly uneventful. He noted, shortly after his own sorting, that he himself would be sharing a dorm with a pair of twins, named Fred and George. They seemed to be quite the pair of trouble makers. Their antics were often amusing, though he sometimes avoided them so as not to be on the receiving end. A hard working and quiet child at this point, his first and second year passed mostly uneventfully. He passed his classes well, made plenty of friends, and declined the suggestion to try out for Quidditch, knowing that while he loved the game, his own talents lay elsewhere.

In his third year, there were two noted events. The first, the arrival of Harry Potter into his own house. The second, his discovery of girls. Seeing them in their own clothes dressed up for Hogsmeade visits made him realise what beautiful creatures women were, and he did his best to make them feel viewed as such. He had his first girlfriend towards the end of the year, but it was more of a friendship thing, and they parted amicably before going home for the summer. Much of the Potter business went straight over his head. Kenneth simply saw him as a decent kid and left him alone.

Fourth year was weird, though. Everyone seemed to think that the Potter boy was responsible for all the people who ended up Petrified in the hospital wing... Kenneth didn't see it, though. Potter might have that annoying celebrity thing going on, but he just seemed too nice. Happy to be vindicated, he had nonetheless been worried all year, despite being pureblooded himself, for the sake of his Muggleborn friends.

In his fifth year, to his delight, he was made Prefect. He hoped that this would lead to advantages later on, and he knew that it afforded some perks in the present. It did not, however, win him friends in certain places. Taking his responsibility seriously, he was on the receiving end of one particular prank from the Weasley twins. He itched for an age after they put Bulbadox powder in his pyjamas, presumably having annoyed them by pointing out the school rules one time too many. Combined with the stress of OWL year, when half of his year went almost mad, he was very glad to see the back of it. In the end, despite just about achieving a pass in Divination, he dropped the subject as he felt knowing the future was one stress too many. He instead continued with his other optional subject, Arithmancy, as well as five other subjects (which even at the time made him question his sanity).

Sixth year coincided with the Triwizard tournament, something Kenneth found very exciting. Mildly entertaining fantasies of entering under sneaky means - he, like several other sixth years - would be underage at the time - when he saw how dangerous some of the tasks were he was nonetheless glad of the excuse. He attended each task and was amazed at what they involved, finding it all really exciting, just like the others. He was in two minds about who to support. Potter was from his own house, but Cedric was actually a legal contestant. In the end, he decided to simply cheer for a Hogwarts win, as anything else may be disloyal. He attended the Yule Ball with a pretty dark-haired Beauxbatons girl, with whom he narrowly avoided being caught snogging in the bushes. They did not date properly, but kept in touch after the Beauxbatons students went home. Like many others, however, the end of the year's events were devastating. He had not known Cedric well, but seeing such a young life, full of potential cut short before it began was terribly sad and seemed very unfair. He toasted Cedric loudly with all the others at the end of term feast.

During his seventh year, Professor Umbridge irritated the hell out of him. The existing Prefect system worked, yet the odious woman complicated matters by introducing the Inquisitorial squad, undermining them all. He made the mental note of which people had joined this unpopular band, knowing that they might be worth watching out for later on. He did not believe her when she said that Potter had been lying - as a Ministry woman in cahoots with Fudge, it was in her best interests to say so. His loyalty lay with Gryffindor. As a prefect he did not participate in the sabotage of her lessons and office, but secretly found them terribly funny. He oddly missed Fred and George when they left, finding a new respect for them after their spectacular exit. He contributed in his own way by accidentally on purpose "not seeing" students - and Peeves - when they were up to something. He somehow got away with it, too.

Following his Hogwarts graduation, he spent the summer following up job advertisements and applications for several departments in the Ministry. He knew he wanted to work there somehow, despite the presence of people such as the newly returned Umbridge, because he felt that one day, he and those like him may be able to change the culture of the whole institution. One has to try these things, no? After considering the DIMC where his sister worked, the WAS where his mother did and the DMAC where his father had quickly risen up the ranks, he opted for the DMT and the Floo Network Authority traineeship. It was relatively safe, with a steady income, good prospects, and unlike the other departments, had a rather swish workspace for its trainees, occupying the same amount of space as the other departments despite having fewer people. He got on well with Artemius Barker, the second year trainee immediately above him, and had a major thing for Glenda Grewthorpe, the final year trainee who is now a fully qualified DMT witch.

Following his first full year at the Ministry, he has spent the summer relaxing at the family home in Cumbria, learning to waterski on Bassenthwaite Lake and catching up with his favourite Muggle novelists. He's also decided to try and win round the affections of a certain Patricia Stimpson... because that can't hurt, can it? Second year will likely be busier than the first, so he intends to have as many fun diversions as possible.

Oh honestly. I don't know what's going on around here, but the number of assignments piling up is just ridiculous. I'm not a slacker by any means, but let's be realistic here: I'm a second year trainee! Smithins is alright, and I know she thinks I'm getting along really well with the training, but I'm surprised at her for entrusting me with monitoring some of the fires by myself. It would at least help if I knew what I was watching out for. Given that none of us have actually been told, just been told to note down anything 'significant', it must be something big... I wonder what. Hopefully it's nothing to do with all that anti-Muggleborn stuff they're getting up to downstairs. Now that is just weird.

My dearest darling beautiful Patricia. I'm bored and I feel that your magnificent company would entertain and lift my spirits greatly. D'you fancy going for a drink on Saturday?

So, the working week is almost at an end and frankly, I'm really bloody glad of it. I intend to spend as much of my time off as possible either asleep in bed or asleep on the couch, though I suppose at some point I'll have to leave to take Jeremy for a walk.

What is everyone else doing? And please, don't hold anything back. I know you're probably all living lives much more exciting than mine. Don't hide it to spare my feelings - I'm embracing it now!
Kenneth sat at his working area, leaned back on his chair and sighed, rubbing his hands across his face. His space - approximately the size of an average person's sitting room - was one of four taking up each quadrant of a rectangular hall. His space, one of the two on the far wall next to the windows, was where he had spent the last four hours with a listening device in his ear. He had been making notes on a series of mindless conversations, putting the parchment on a pile in the centre of the room once they were finished. From there, his immediate senior colleague - the third year trainee in the department - would "analyse" the content and pass it on to their superior, who would decide if any of the other Ministry departments would be interested in what they had discovered. He doubted, however, that the likes of Dolores Umbridge would care about old ladies swapping cake recipes or the never-ending gossip between the girlfriends of pro-Quidditch players.

He sat still at his desk for a moment, before realising that all of a sudden, the office was becoming rather warm. He glanced at the fire to his right, realising that the cooling charms - this was a fire with messaging functions only - had begun to wear off. With a flick of his wand he replenished the spellwork, turning back to find that none other than the third year himself had arrived, carrying a tea tray. "Thought we could all use a break" the young man said, setting a mug of coffee in front of Kenneth before heading to his own desk. "You'll need it, after you've found out what I have."

"Really?" Kenneth frowned, sipping the coffee and looking at Barker, directly opposite, next to the other window that as the two senior trainees, they were entitled to. "Is it about the new kids?" he asked, knowing that they were soon to be introduced to the new first-year intake on the training programme. The business seemed odd enough already, as two desks had been prepared instead of one, already doubling the usual size of the department, usually small.

"Really" nodded Barker, a small, dark haired 20 year old with a much more relaxed demeanour than anyone else in the FNA. "And you won't like it either" he said, gesturing with a free hand towards the two empty desks. "They've doubled the intake, AGAIN. We'll have to fit four of the newbies along that side, instead of two like we'd been told. What they want all of us for, I don't know. There won't be room to swing a cat on that side. I just don't know what Smithins was thinking in allowing it..."

Kenneth spent the rest of Barker's rant nodding and going "Mmmm" in the right places, but internally his mind whirred, trying to figure out what was really behind the new move. Barker was right, four was far too many for a department of their size. But given that their duties had changed rather dramatically lately, it was all rather ominous. It seemed as though the monitoring side of the FNA was being really ramped up now... and he didn't like that. Not one bit. Especially, he told himself bitterly, with all that crap going on downstairs. They must be up to something, and dragging us right into it...
