CERIDWEN Talaith Cadwallader
Name: Ceridwen Talaith Cadwallader

Nicknames: Ceri, Tally

Meanings: Ceridwen is the Welsh goddess of Poetic Inspiration. It comes from 'Gcerdd', meaning poetry, and 'Gwen', meaning white or fair.
Talaith is derived from the Welsh word for diadem.
Cadwallader is an old Welsh surname derived from 'cad', battle, and 'gwaladr', a leader, a lord--the leader or lord of the battle. Gwaladr would seem to come from gwal, a wall or defense, and adre, signifying at home or abroad, everywhere.

Date of Birth: January 23rd, 1977

Age: 20

Place of Birth: Merlin's Bridge, Wales, UK

Place of Residence: London, England, UK

Bloodline: Half-blood

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Allegiance: The Good Guys. At the moment, this appears to be the Ministry. As things develop, who knows?

House: Hufflepuff

Secondary House: Gryffindor

Roles: Prefect, Soprano in the school choir

Year: 1988-1995

appearance

Height: 5'3 "and a bit". That little bit is very important.

Build: Thin. Slender rather than lithe, her shape comes to her through less than nutritious food habits (she'll forgo breakfast and drink coffee in the morning at work instead) rather than exercise.

Eyes: A muddy blue that looks brown sometimes in certain light.

Hair: Very dark brown, almost black hair with a gentle wave to it. She usually wears it down to her shoulders, although she'll charm it long or put it in an up-do for special occasions. On work matters out of the office, it will be pulled back from her face in a plait, unless it's an emergency and she only has time to put it in a ponytail.

Skin: A pale, milky white, unless she fakes it. She's Welsh, OK? She doesn't tan!

Wardrobe: She wears fairly dainty, girly and innocent clothing when off-duty. Think little sun-dresses in summer (to show off her legs, the part of her body she does like), jeans with a v-neck jumper and a pretty scarf in winter. Even with her work clothes, she likes to at least seem to make an effort whether fashion-forward or not. As Aurors have to be dressed practically for their job, they're one of the few Ministry departments where dress codes are not necessarily observed by all staff. Ceridwen chooses to wear jeans (comfortable and easier to move in than skirts or dressy trousers) with flat faux-dragon hide boots over the top, t-shirts in a variety of colours and robes over the top.

Distinguishing Features: A brown, oval shaped birth mark on the small of her back, and a small swirl shaped tattoo on the outside of her left heel.
personality
Likes: Spas, sweets, coffee, Chick Lit, quiet company.
Dislikes: Sweaty nightclubs, pasta, potatoes, philosophy, obnoxious bullies.

Strengths: Separating emotion from fact, courage, timing, visualising necessary results (the reason she is good at Charms).
Weaknesses: Social shyness, a fear the reality of intimacy and commitment as opposed to the general idea, complicated academic fact (she was poor at Astronomy because of the star charts - movements of the planets etc are HARD!).

Mirror of Erised: Voldemort gone, the Death Eaters imprisoned, and herself with a house, partner and family.
Patronus: A roe deer hind. Female Deer symbolise gentleness, grace, swiftness, abundance, intuition, introspection, alternative paths to a goal
Boggart: A triumphant You-Know-Who in the Atrium of the Ministry of Magic.

General Description:

Most people's first impression of Ceridwen are based on the physical - she is petite and dainty with a girl next door sort of prettiness. She is either cute, innocent, or not a threat. The first two might be justifiable, the last most certainly not. In fact, it is precisely because she doesn't look like a threat that she potentially is very much one.

As a family member, she is the one who never forgets birthdays, does her fair share of chores (whether in the mood or not) and negotiates between warring sides without getting involved.

As a friend, she isn't the kind who will stay up all night partying with you, but if you need her for company when pulling an all nighter to finish that assignment you put off to the last minute, Ceridwen is the one who will stop you panicking and make you coffee.

As a girlfriend, she just isn't the sort of girl who tries to control her boyfriend's life or make him change. It is morally dubious to do so, yes, but her main reasoning is that she wouldn't have picked a bloke if she had to do the changing. If he doesn't want to change things that are more fundamentally flawed, he isn't right for her, so she ends it before anyone gets hurt. She loves the idea of settling down one day, but the practicalities of actually doing so, particularly in this day and age, scare her a little. It is her head, not her heart, that tell her to wait until the war is over.

As a work colleague, she has retained her Hufflepuff work ethic and never forgets to do something she has promised to do for you. Her assignments and reports are due in on time, and her mentor says she is one of the quietest, most uncomplaining students he has ever taught. Ceridwen is that girl in the office who sits working diligently in her cubicle, barely looking up unless addressed directly. When there is a stressful atmosphere, she doesn't stick her nose in and ask what's wrong, but will silently walk by and set a cup of tea and a couple of pieces of chocolate onto your desk.

House:

Aquarians who are sorted into House Hufflepuff are introverted, but not shy; march to the beat of a different drummer, but don't wear their weirdness like a flag; socially minded, but highly critical of society. Confused? So are the Hufflepuff Aquarians, but they tend to sort things out eventually. Their minds lean toward the practical side of things - they'd rather invent new and useful spells or gadgets than dwell for hours in hot air theory - and the solutions they find to common problems are brilliantly on target. They like people and want to get along well with everybody, but are uncomfortable with intimacy; so they have lots of acquaintances but few close friends. They have the ability to laugh at most any situation.

Ceridwen was a natural choice for Hufflepuff house as she embodies many of its qualities, both traditional and stereotypical. She is gentle, kind and deeply loyal to her friends. Knowing the value of hard work she gives her job - and when younger, her school work - everything she has and will find it hard to rest if she can't help others whom she knows are struggling. She is quiet and often stays at the edges of a situation rather than jumping straight in before she is needed. She wants everyone to be happy - well, everyone who isn't a Dark Wizard or supporter, of course.

Secondary House:

Gryffindor Aquarians are the social activists and loons of their House. They'll picket for House Elf Liberation. They'll wear their robes inside out because they spent all night reading, not pay attention to how they dressed the next day, and not care if their rumpled appearance is pointed out to them. They are intellectual rebels and will loudly defend their opinions, even if doing so makes enemies. They are apt to question authority. "Even Merlin was wrong, some of the time," they'll say, shrugging. While not particularly good at dealing with crisis situations (they stress out easily) they do tend to have enough foresight to see the situations coming, and prevent them from happening in the first place. They can be flamboyantly talented, but are less interested in using their talent to "make it big" than in using it to make a better life for themselves or other people. Because Gryffindor tends to be a flamboyant house, these oddballs (they are always odd) tend to stick out for being unusual.

Ceridwen is idealistic and when she has a cause, she will throw her weight behind it with whatever energy she has to spare. She will defend her point of view when riled, and refuses to change it to suit others, though she will sometimes shut her mouth to save the hassle and quietly seethe instead. She is better at dealing with a crisis than the average Gryffindor Aquarius, her ability to compartmentalise her emotions when in trouble being one of the reasons the hat decided the house was not for her. She might be considered eccentric, mostly due to her calm quietness and comfort in being by herself.
relationships
Family:

Mother: Eileen Ffion Cadwallader, née Jones, 55. Eileen is a Muggle with a Welsh speaking mother and English speaking father, and thus grew up fluent in both languages. She is from Haverfordwest in western Wales, and is now a housewife in Merlin's Bridge, where she moved following her marriage. Ceridwen is not especially a mummy's girl, but she looks up to her mum and trusts her advice.

Father: Emlyn Rhydian Cadwallader, 57, formerly of Gryffindor house. Emlyn comes from a long line of Welshmen, and while both his parents are magical, he would likely be considered halfblood by purists as there have been so many Muggles, muggleborns and halfbloods in the line that it would be hard to trace back where the magic actually came from originally. Emlyn didn't much approve of his daughter's career choice at first, but told her that "if you insist upon being an Auror, be the bloody best one you can possibly be." She often thinks back on these words when times get tough.

Siblings: Rhys Iwan Cadwallader, 28, formerly of Gryffindor house. Rhys is a straight-laced young man who regularly attends church with his mother and has a desk job at Gringotts Wizard Bank, analyzing customer data. He is married with two small daughters and thinks Ceridwen is mad for choosing to be an Auror and tells her so frequently, but will stick up for her in big brotherly fashion when need be.

Dylan Arthur Cadwallader, 24, formerly of Ravenclaw house. Dylan is the most outgoing and social of the siblings, going against the bookish Ravenclaw stereotype by choosing to be an investigative reporter for the Prophet, specialising in international news. He thinks Ceridwen's job is the coolest thing ever and often asks about it, being interested from an academic standpoint. Despite what Llew says, he would never try and sneak a story from her.

Llewellyn Broderick Cadwallader, 22, formerly of Slytherin house. Llewellyn is the closest in age to Ceridwen and probably the closest emotionally also. Despite his frequent protestations that Ceridwen would never have existed if he had been born a girl, he would be the first to stick up for her in a row and defend her honour if necessary. Llewellyn jokes that his sister is his 'partner in crime', somewhat ironically as he is a treasure hunter and curse breaker for Gringotts

Others: [[name]] Cadwallader, cousin, Hufflepuff. TBD if and when the character is picked up.

Friends: Ceridwen is all about the job, so her friends are mostly other Aurors, particularly the younger ones, with a smattering of acquaintances from other sections of the DMLE.

Enemies: Dark wizards, dark wizard supporters, blood supremacists. Ceridwen is unmovable on this one.
history
Eileen Jones was working in a newsagent's in Haverfordwest when Emlyn Cadwallader walked in. A handsome, dark-haired young man with a southern accent, they chatted for a long while over the contents of the day's newspaper he had popped in to buy. He told her that he was a bank worker visiting a friend on his time off - which was the truth, but not the whole truth. He did work in a bank, and he was visiting a friend, but the bank was Gringotts and the friend was a researcher from the DCRMC, monitoring the movement of Welsh Green dragons across the Pembrokeshire area.

The more and more they talked over the different days Emlyn visited, the closer they got. Eileen was delighted when he asked her on a date and said yes immediately, though he did not tell her about his being a wizard until he was ready to propose marriage to her a year later. The knowledge did not faze her as much as he, or even she suspected. Eileen felt as though there had always been something different about him. After a short engagement, traditional in the working class area she came from, they were married. Eileen was 27, Emlyn 29. Rhys arrived just under a year later.

Although they never admitted it, especially to their last son, the Cadwalladers especially wanted a girl and so were thrilled when the arrival of Ceridwen completed their family. She was described as being 'their little blessing' and was completely doted upon whilst growing up. She had an ordinary childhood, attending the same nursery and primary school as her older brothers, and going off exploring with them when she was old enough. She had to be a little bit of a tomboy, given circumstances.

Ceridwen was devastated when Rhys received his Hogwarts letter. She was only three years old at the time and thought he was going away forever, feeling both betrayed and clingy as a result. By the time it was Dylan's turn to go, she was seven and much more used to the idea, and when Llewellyn began at the famous school she was terribly jealous, having shown signs of her own magic by this time - a bully at school had picked on her, calling her a boy, and she glared at him so hard his face had broken out into horrible looking boils.

When she finally got to Hogwarts, her sorting took longer than average due to the Hat's indecision over whether Gryffindor or Hufflepuff was the right place for her. It eventually decided that her Hufflepuff traits were more dominant and sent her there, meaning that her parents now had a child in each house, making rivalries at home rather interesting. Rhys had left school by this point, however, so Dylan (now in 5th year) was head of the family whilst at school.

Somewhat fitting for her reserved personality, Ceridwen's first three years at Hogwarts were relatively uneventful. She was one of those students who wasn't noticed much beyond her house, not being especially social or in many societies, choir being the exception. When the time came to choose optional subjects, she took Divination and Care of Magical Creatures by default. Runes and Arithmancy seemed too theoretical for her liking, and being half blood, Muggle Studies was rather pointless.

In her fourth year, Harry Potter arrived. Like most of her house, which had a more natural alliance with Gryffindor than the others, she left him alone to get on with things. The chaos of the end of that year surprised her, however, as despite his fame he seemed like a pretty quiet kid. She felt rather sorry for him, actually, as the Slytherins certainly seemed to enjoy having a go at him. In fact, more than once she told Llewellyn off for joining in.

Ordinarily, Ceridwen would have spent fifth year with her nose in her books, working hard for the exams. It was hard, however, with the Chamber of Secrets being opened and Muggleborns everywhere living in fear, making Ceridwen indignant on principle. By the time the careers interview came around, she had decided that she just had to do something about the obvious situation with dark magic coming around, for with this in her future she would never feel safe. After a long and ever so slightly chat with Professor Sprout, she decided that trying out for the Auror course WAS the right thing for her, despite the protestations of most of her family (including Llew, though he was secretly proud of her).

She dropped all of her subjects bar the compulsory ones at the beginning of sixth year in order to concentrate on her goal. At least this year was relatively quiet, though she absolutely hated the Dementors. Like the rest of the students they made her feel all funny, and she practised the Patronus charm extra hard, just in case.

Somewhat to Ceridwen's chagrin, her seventh year was one of the most chaotic during her time at school, due to the Triwizard Tournament. Although the Yule Ball - which she attended with a fellow seventh year - was a pleasant diversion from work, the disruption to the schedule annoyed her a bit. As did the inclusion of Harry Potter as a contestant. For the first time, the younger boy got on her nerves, as he did many Hufflepuffs who did not believe his story about not putting his name in. The badges were a touch too far, though, and she chose to attend the tasks and study them from a tactical and academic point of view. She hoped to secure an interview at the Auror Office and believed it would help.

Cedric Diggory's death, however, turned her world upside down. Like many others, she simply could not believe that the Dark Lord had returned and killed one of their own. Unlike many of them, however, it was more of a case of not wanting to believe it. It had finally hit home just what a big task becoming an Auror would be, and at the last minute, she balked. Much of the summer following seventh year was spent talking to her family and doing a lot of soul searching about whether or not applying was the right thing to do. In the end, it was something her mother said that convinced her to go for it. Ceridwen thought about Eileen's words - "this man sounds like no-one more evil there has ever been. If there was ever a cause to fight against, cariad, it's this one" - as she handed in her application on the day of closing.

She has recently completed the second year of Auror training, having impressed with her passion and yet her ability to not let it cloud her judgment. There was a minor wobble during the Disguise part of the Concealment and Disguise module, which she almost failed as the practical test gave way to exam nerves and she changed the colour rather than shape of her face as requested. Her mentor's encouragement got her through it, however, and she is now ready to start her third and final year. What a time to do it in...

What's that noise? Yes, it's the ears of your friendly neighbourhood Auror trainees spouting steam through overwork. There's not a single one of us who hasn't been working our backsides off with the office based team this week, but it'll all be worth it when You Know Who gets his arse kicked and the Death Eater scum get locked up in Azkaban where they belong. It will all be worth it then. All the training, all the stake outs, all the school studying that got us to this point, no matter how hard we might have cursed it at the time. Everything will be worth it.

Ceridwen leaned forward in the dark, making a movement with her free hand as if to tuck a loose bit of hair behind her ear. This was a force of habit by now, however, as she had been on stake-out for the past fifteen hours and she had been well prepared for potential action. She and her partner for this mission, a senior Auror named Davison, were situated on one side of the cave entrance - Ceridwen behind some large boulders and Davison sitting partway up a tall tree beside her. On the other side, two of their colleagues were similarly concealed. Intelligence had suggested that the Death Eaters might be hiding secret resources and equipment in there, but they couldn't risk going in if the people they'd been tailing there for the past fortnight could return any minute. Instead, they waited.

When the Muggle watch on her right wrist - the young Welsh witch was lefthanded - showed that the time was a quarter past midnight, the bushes situated some fifty feet away began to stir, leaves swirling around in a flurry of air. Four cloaked and hooded figures appeared, looking around and beginning to move to the entrance of the cave.

Looking up to receive her instructions, Ceridwen could see that Davison was grinning. He looked down at her and mouthed 'one each!', before turning his dark head back to watch as the Death Eaters each murmured spells at the cave front to allow them to pass. When they had all vanished inside, he hopped down from his tree with the odd silence achieved through years of experience in acting stealthily.

One by one, the Aurors lined up in front of their target, looking at the rock wall that stood in front of them. "And now we go in" whipered Davison, raising his wand and beginning to creep forward, beyond the illusion...
