The Bugcast episode 112 will be broadcast live tonight from 21:00 UK time in The Bugcast chatroom.

We wake up the show again from last week’s slow playlist, and we tell you why Cara had to go to A&E earlier this week... ooh, I bet the suspense is too much!

The Bugcast episode one wan won, broadcasting live tonight... [28 May 2010|06:06pm]
Oh yes, episode 111 of The Bugcast is broadcasting live tonight from 21:00 UK time over yonder in The Bugcast Chatroom

It’s a slow one this week, without the usual kickers, but the music is still very much of the same standard you would expect from a high quality music podcast such as this.

And... if that wasn’t enough... we have a brief chat with Mark Marshall about the Four For 4 Project and where it’s going.

All this for nothing? You betcha! ;o)

The Wicker Man (2006) - a review [18 May 2010|09:26pm]
Well, I approached this remake of the 1973 cult classic horror, The Wicker Man, with much caution and fear, knowing how modern remakes of classic films usually turn out to be so disappointing.

Now, this remake, starring Nicolas Cage, wasn’t received very well by critics or the box office... so I’m sure you can understand my concern.

Another case in point is The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) - again, another amazing film and certainly one of my favourite films of all time. The 1998 TV movie remake was dire at best. I haven’t seen the 2009 movie remake as yet, but I will approach that with the same open-mindedness as I did with The Wicker Man remake.

So, back to the situation in hand...

As a standalone film and without my prior knowledge of 1973 original, I don’t think that the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man would have appealed to me, as it failed to contain the depth and detail that I expect in a film such as this. The original, starring the late great Edward Woodward is one of my favourite films of all time, and although it was very difficult not to compare the remake to the original, I tried to base my experience on the quality of the story, rather than the quality of the filmmaking.

As it happens, I was actually very impressed with the faithfulness to the original screenplay. The storyline was consistent with the original - apparently over 80% of the character script was verbatim to the original, which is something I wasn’t expecting. But, something I was expecting was the over-dramatisation of the plot: the car crash at the beginning, the water-related scenes, the bees, etc.

I don’t want to give too much away, so as not to spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet... so I’ll summarise by saying this: the acting was good, the storyline was good, the faithfulness to the original was good, the climax was probably dampened by my knowledge of what was going to happen anyway, which is why I was hoping for more from this remake. The short period of violence towards the end of the film was somewhat controversial, and a little excessive in my opinion.

Overall, I enjoyed it... but it could have been so much better. It lacked the element of originality which could have made this film great.

Rating: 3/5

The Bugcast website [18 Apr 2010|12:20pm]
I’m putting a brand new design of The Bugcast website live this evening. It’s a completely new back-end, running Wordpress, and incorporates a number of new features that I really didn’t have time to develop myself.

For the web users, you’ll notice that everything looks totally different. For example, you can now comment on shows directly on that show’s blog entry, and there is now a player on each show entry.

For the feed users, I’m afraid you’ll notice more than most, as you’ll probably get a number of old shows coming through on the feed again. This is because the unique identifier - that tells your podcatcher or iTunes whether you’ve already downloaded a show or not - has changed, and I don’t have any control over this. However, this indiscriminate redownloading of old shows should only happen once.

Anyway, I hope you will like the new design... and don’t forget that you can comment on the design by clicking on the Contact link at the top of the page when the site goes live.

I would anticipate the site going live around 22:00 UK time tonight.

Another classic Amy quote: Rainbows and grey skies [07 Apr 2010|08:33pm]
Yet another classic pair of quotes from Amy:

Amy: “Daddy, where is the rainbow?”
Me: “Would you like me to show you how to work out where a rainbow should be?”
Amy: “Ooh, yes please” *bouncebounce*
Me: proceeds to tell her about looking at the opposite side of the sky to the sun, and how the rainbow would only appear when it’s raining, etc... complete with hand gestures and pointing at the sky
Amy looks at me
Amy: “Can we go inside now please, Daddy?”

Then, she asked me about the grey sky (although it was actually a dirty brown)

Amy: “Why does the sky look dirty?”
Me: “Because it’s raining over there, sweetie.”
Amy: “Is it because the Easter Bunny did a pump?”

Out of the mouths of babes...

Co-op custard... [04 Apr 2010|09:03pm]
I understand the need for the observation of Easter Sunday, but not when I’m in need of lightbulbs and a loaf of bread! I travelled around the periphery of Doncaster today, looking for various shops, and ended up back in good ol’ Conisbrough where our Co-op was still open.

Anyway, as I was walking around the shop, with an ever-growing pile of food items in my arms (I don’t believe in baskets, clearly), I overheard a conversation between a mother and daughter, and it went something like this:

Mother: “So, do you want to get some custard?”
Daughter: “Yeah, definitely. Fish custard.”

Oh man, did I laugh!

Two become one, potentially not even that... [03 Apr 2010|04:12pm]
Yesterday, I posted in my blipfoto journal, that we had just bought two goldfish, Ben and Holly.

I am saddened to report that Holly sadly died this afternoon, and Ben doesn’t look like he’ll last the day. In hindsight, we have no idea as to how old they were, or what condition they were in when we got them, but the fact that they didn’t last a full day suggests that they weren’t well, or we did something wrong. I don’t see how the latter could be, as we have done everything pretty much by the book.

If Ben does leave us, then we’ll clean out the tank, set it up again, wait a few days and then get another single goldfish from the pet shop. At least we’ll know that they’ve been looked after up to that point.

Edit @ 17:29: Ben just left us.
