Tonight
Since I'm done with finals and my jury, I'm watching Return of the King tonight. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome to do so.

You're done? Ugh, you're so lucky!

It's one of the many advantages of being a brass player at the school. Our juries are earlier in the week, something I'm immensely thankful for.

Anyway, want to join me for some Lord of the Rings? You can study while you watch, I guess.

Oh I'm just a performance minor, my jury isn't really a big deal. It's the theory final I'm worried about, sigh.

Um, maybe? I don't know, the plot is sort of involved, isn't it?

Which theory class are you in? Because the final for my section of 101 wasn't too hard. Lots of part writing, identifying appogiaturas and leading tones, that kind of thing.

Have you not seen them? Eru, what is wrong with this place?

Right now? 231 and and 251. Lots of aural skills and structural analysis. I've got pieces I'm supposed to be ear training with.

Um, no? Sorry?

What pieces? I assume if you're in an upper level aural skills you're dealing with tonally fragmented music. Are we talking Berg's violin concerto or Webern? I'm not really a fan of either, but pitch-wise they'd be good for ear training.

You have got to watch them. They're some of the most critically acclaimed movies of the early 2000s, and the last film alone won eleven Academy Awards. You can't argue with that kind of brilliance in film-making.

Well it doesn't really matter what they sound like. As far as the maths are concerned, they're both pretty darn close to perfect. Have you studied Bach's fugues? Absolutely insane, but so flipping beautiful on paper.

Oh. Um. I liked Legally Blonde?

Perfect mathematically, maybe, but not so much fun to play. The Bach fugues are amazing, though.

Bourgeois crap. That's nice, I guess. I never saw it, so I can't really talk about it.

Well that's why I'm not a performance person. All I need is the stuff on paper.

Oh. Well then. You're really missing out.

Are...are you serious?

Okay, change of plans, you're coming over and we're starting at the beginning of the films. I don't even know how to describe them, they're amazing, and so are the books, so you'll need to read those as well. I'll explain as they go, it's kind of involved and I don't know where to start.

I've got popcorn and coke, so we should be fine...

You're game, right?

Awesome.

I'm room 203 in Schiller Hall. I've got a decent tv and speakers, so the quality should be good. I'll be there whenever you're ready, so feel free to come over. We could even order a pizza. Also, I can loan you my copy of the books, so you can read them, if you'd like.

Finally! Someone who's seen the movies; I thought everyone here had been living in a black hole of cinematic taste. I watch the movies at least once a year, same with reading the books. There's so much profundity in the writing, it's inspiring every time. Not to mention that the music for the films is such a lush score. I think it's impossible not to be moved by the music at the Grey Havens.

And I'm rambling again.

Holy crap, when Aragorn starts lighting the torch things, Howard Shore's score is like... oh my god I want to just die it's so amazing, right?

Uh, I'm not really fluent in the lingo of LotR. So I'm probably going to make an ass of myself. Sorry in advance.

I agree, the Beacons is an amazing moment, but it's Pippin who lights them. The use of that leitmotif, though? Flawless. You hear it throughout the entire series, not knowing what it's going to mean, and it leads up to that astounding moment with the heroic fanfare. That was one of the strongest additions to the film versions. In the books, Gandalf and Pippin just see the Beacons as they ride to Minas Tirith.

Don't worry, I'm very well-versed. I'll keep you informed.

And thanks, hahe.

I'll do your laundry. I can't cook worth a damn, so trust me, that would not be helpful to you. But okay, sure. I'll be your wingman. You help me get my roommate laid, and I'll help you get laid. And make sure your clothes are pressed and smelling like flowers.
