basics

NAME John Roland Sloper. But please, for the love of God, call him Jack. He doesn't even answer to John because no one calls him that, so it's rather like it's not even his real name.
AGE/BIRTHDAY 17 / December 7th, 1978.
HOUSE/YEAR 13th / Gryffindor
SOCIAL STATUS The Slopers are very much a lower middle class family, and they probably always will be - not very much upward mobility here. Jack doesn't care about money either way. He's never had much of it, and you can't miss what you don't have, right? At least, that's what he thinks. He thinks it's pretty stupid how people think they're better than others because of their social status. He wouldn't want to be part of the social elite, anyway - posh kids are all kind of poncey, aren't they?
A-LEVELS Food Studies, Physical Education, ???
SPORTS
Michaelmas: Football. .22 Shooting!, Weight Training?
Lent: Archery??
Summer: Rowing.
EXTRACURRICULARS Yeah, right.

appearance

Jack likes to think that he takes very good care of his body. At 5'10" and with what he he calls his six-pack washboard abs (they're not exactly a six-pack, having no real definition to speak of, but there's no denying that he's at least got a flat stomach), Jack considers himself a very dishy bloke. He has brown eyes and shaggy brown hair that he only gets cut every once in a while at the insistence of whatever maternal girl wants to nag him about it, since he's much too lazy to care about it otherwise. His athletic build from years of attempting to play football hasn't really done him any favours in the sports world, but at least the girls seem to like it? Jack takes any and all opportunities to show off his abs or his 'guns' - yes, he is guilty of the "Have you seen my beach ball?" (insert flex here) "I think it was about this big" (insert flex here) "And I think it went that way" (insert flex here).

Dress Style Jack's style of dress is very haphazard and very messy. Even when he's in the standard Hogwarts College uniform, his shirt is always wrinkled and he's always the one standing in the back of the class, trying to simultaneously tie his tie, button his shirt, and buckle his belt because he's only just woken up five minutes before. When he isn't in uniform, Jack wears whatever's clean - even if it's dirty. His clothes sit in a large heap on the floor of his dorm, and he just plucks off the topmost thing and on it goes. His clothes rarely match, so he usually sticks with wearing sports jerseys and jeans to prevent that from happening - a boy's got to have some dignity.

PB Jonathan Bennett.

personality

Jack is probably one of the most easygoing guys around. He usually tries to lighten heavy moods with a joke or two, for that is Jack's motto in life: never take anything too seriously. The only thing he makes an exception for is football, which is his absolute favourite thing in the entire world - even though he really, really sucks at it. Jack's also an incredibly friendly guy. He can be loud, but not to the point of being obnoxious, and he'll talk to just about anyone - especially if it happens to be a girl. He'll be more obnoxious in the presence of Slytherins simply because they're Slytherins, and who doesn't like to annoy any one of them? Jack certainly isn't about to let such an opportunity pass him by.

But, back to the ladies. Jack is flirtatious to the point of it being ridiculous, and on par with his philosophy of never taking anything too seriously, he hasn't had a proper relationship with a girl that lasted more than a week. It's not that he's a serial dater or anything, he just finds that he quickly gets bored of snogging the same girl for an extended period of time (which is to say, about a week). He does treat women with respect, since he finds them all beautiful creatures (or that they will be beautiful once they've spent some quality time with Jack Sloper) and he also has the decency to break up with a girl before he pursues another one. Of course, all of this implies that Jack has a fair amount of luck with the ladies - which, well, he really doesn't. He's had his fair share of women, but a majority of them are the girls that he sees at home during the summer holidays. People always like you more when they only get to see you three months out of the year, it seems, and most of the girls at Hogwarts have learned to either ignore Jack or yell at him until he shuts up.

Jack is very big on being non confrontational. He absolutely hates fights and tries his best to avoid them. If and when the time comes for him to fight, however, he has no problem launching off a cutting remark or swinging a punch, though Jack is definitely more apt to do the latter than the former. Cutting remarks just aren't his strong suit, especially since he isn't the sharpest crayon in the box. Far from it, in fact. Anyway, most of the time Jack is simply too lazy to get himself involved in a fight, even if his or one of his good friend's honour is being tainted. Despite his reluctance to fight, Jack could certainly not be considered a coward - if he is thrown into the fray, even if it's a fight over something ridiculously stupid, he's not going to back out.

Jack is awful at taking things seriously - he'll often make jokes at inappropriate times in order to 'lighten the mood,' and he generally avoids anything requiring a stern face and a serious mind. He just doesn't handle serious situations well, and they make him really uncomfortable. He's very unwilling to admit that he can't just hang out and party it up for the rest of his life, so it's going to be a sad moment indeed when he's faced with the Real World for the first time.

But if there's one thing that Jack is other than flirtatious, easygoing, and friendly, it's lazy. He hasn't successfully completed a homework assignment in ages, often relying on other people to finish it up for him by employing the use of Puppy Dog Eyes. If something takes longer than ten minutes to complete, it's safe to say that Jack probably won't do it. He's the sort of boy who's room accumulates things over an extended period of time, and each time he tries to clean it, he tells himself 'Eh, I'll just do it later.' He puts off absolutely everything until the last minute, but unlike most procrastinators, it's rare to find Jack cramming for an exam or pulling an all-nighter in order to finish an essay. He rarely does anything to completion - everything is always quarter- or half-done, because Jack is just that lazy. However, he's only lazy in terms of hard work - in all other respects, Jack is most certainly a doer. He likes to be busy, but only if he's busy with mindless things that don't actually mean anything, like running around outside or making a collage out of hot girls clipped from magazines.

DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS

There are a lot of people out there who might not know what they want to do with their lives, but at least they have some idea. Jack is not one of those people. He's completely and totally aimless - he's one of those people who will put in three extra years at university not for more credits, but just so that they can party and put off actual responsibility for a bit longer. He shirks any and all duties and is completely irresponsible, yet he still manages to have friends. He's one of the least likely people to do something out of malicious intent - everything Jack does, he does with good intentions. So if he forgets to show up for a meeting? He totally meant to, he just forgot. Honest - he'll never do it again! On top of all that, while there are some slackers who actually have smarts but just don't try, Jack is actually kind of stupid.

LIKES

1 Girls. Jack's standards are hideously low - the only time he won't give you the once over is if you're under the age of fourteen or above the age of fifty.
2 Football. Let's ignore the fact that Jack really, really, really SUCKS at football - he's forever accidentally kicking balls at people's faces, and he even knocked himself unconscious for a few minutes when he charged headfirst into one of the goalposts. He's an avid supporter of Manchester United, and the Slopers are all season ticket holders (though Jack misses most of the matches because of school).
3 Food. If he could, Jack would eat all day, every day. But that just isn't possible.
4 Parties. Jack loves a good party, but only if they have all of the necessary accessories - you know, booze, babes, and buddies.
5 His family. It's cheesy and mushy and girly, but Jack wouldn't trade them for the world, even if they do get on his nerves sometimes.
OTHER LIKES rap, Cormac McLaggen (they're such heterosexual life mates), marijuana, hash brownies, porn, rubbing dirt on his wounds, plaid.

DISLIKES

1 Slytherins, of course. Isn't that some sort of unwritten rule in the Code of Gryffindor?
2 The indoors. He hates being stuck inside all day and being forced to learn things he's never going to use, anyway.
3 Very Serious Situations. They kind of freak him out, actually, and Jack would much rather have a good laugh.
4 Television. He'd much rather be outside, running around and getting nothing done, than inside, sitting on the couch and getting nothing done.
5 This is probably one of the weirdest dislikes, especially considering Jack's generally open-minded view of people, but he absolutely cannot stand fat people. Why can't they get off their lazy arses and jog a few miles? He doesn't get it. At all.
OTHER DISLIKES winter weather, people talking about his mum, politics.

INSIDE SCOOP

1 Jack can cook. He hasn't told anyone this, because standing in the kitchen wearing a flowery apron (which he sometimes does, for kicks) is not exactly the manliest of things. However, he's usually the one serving up the meals in the Sloper household, often combining crazy ingredients to make something that actually tastes pretty good.
2 Despite his loudly and often proclaimed love for 'the street life' - that is, blasting Wu Tang and Biggie (EASTSIIIDE! Though he really is too into the music to pay much attention to East Coast vs. West Coast battles) as loud as possible when home - he is rather embarrassingly obsessed with the Backstreet Boys. He bought their first album as a joke present, ended up listening to it at home, and what can he say? They've got it goin' on. If one listens closely, he can be heard singing their tunes in the shower.
3 Jack had his first girlfriend at the age of fourteen. It was a girl named Laura who lived on his street, and who forgot to tell him that, in order for Jack to become her boyfriend, he'd have to spend some Quality Time with Laura's father. This Quality Time consisted of camping in Laura's backyard and sharing a tent while Laura's father shared way too much information about the family, Laura, and himself. The experience was so scarring that he's never mentioned it to anyone, and he hasn't spoken to Laura since that fateful camping trip.
4 There isn't a year that goes by that Jack doesn't have a crush on at least one of his female professors. Most of these are embarrassing, especially his short-lived attraction to Madame Pince. It's something about the way she says "shhh!"

social

Best Friends CORMAC MCLAGGEN! Seriously, Jack would do anything for this guy. It's kind of sickeningly sweet.
Enemies Nikolas Vaisey and Harold Dingle, but more so Nikolas Vaisey. What a douchebag!
Significant Other He's sort of got a thing with Parvati Patil. How cute!
Crush Parvati Patil.
Past Relationships ???
Turn-Ons A pair of tits, blonds, brunettes, redheads, nice legs, mothering tendencies, party girls, pretty girls, curves, long hair, short hair, you get the picture.
Turn-Offs Dudes.

history

FAMILY
Charles Sloper Ruggedly masculine, Charles is everything that Jack wants to be, and then some. Since the death of his wife he's become something of a rogue gentleman, dating whomever he wants to and never having a relationship lasting longer than he deems necessary. He's a very good father, though, and makes sure that he always takes time out of his life to bond with his children. After all, what else would a Sloper Board Games Night be for?

William Sloper But call him Bill, really. He's like a mini-Jack only a tad bit smarter, which is a very good thing. He's actually good at football and good at sticking to one lady at a time, even at the tender age of fifteen. All he wants out of life is to grow up and be a professional footballer, but he's also got a secret dream of being a rocket scientist. Who knew?

Philip Sloper But call him Phil! Really! Jokingly referred to as 'the gay twin' by his family (even though it's not so much of a joke and is actually the TRUTH), Phil is the quieter of the twins and the quietest Sloper boy by far. He wants to be an architect and is forever thinking up new, impossibly expensive additions to add onto the Sloper household - ones that are never actually built, but it's the thought that counts.

The Sloper household is one filled to bursting with testosterone. It's a family of four: Jack, his father Charles, and his younger twin brothers Philip and William (more commonly known as Phil and Bill). Jack's mother, Helen, died when Jack was seven. But don't think that this is some Disney film where the death of a parent results in crazy amounts of tension between father and son(s) - in fact, it's quite the opposite. The Sloper boys have bonded quit well in light of the tragedy, and though Helen's picture is propped up in a frame on every available surface, they've been pretty good at moving on with their lives. Even so, Jack becomes oddly quiet whenever the subject of mothers is brought up, and he gets highly offended if anyone dares insult his mother. It's one of the few things that does get him worked up, actually. The grieving process definitely served to knit the Slopers together, and they're a very tight family. They even have Board Game Night.

Charles, Jack's father, owns a sports equipment shop in Manchester, which Jack is forced to work at during the summer holidays along with his brothers, who are two years younger than he is. Jack is exceptionally close with his younger brothers, though he's definitely closer with Bill - if only because, at times, Phil can seem really, really, well, gay. Not that Jack would have a problem with that! He just doesn't expect that the two of them will have much in common because they obviously wouldn't be able to chat about hot girls. He does, however, disagree with his brothers on their love of rugby - why don't they understand that football is just so much BETTER? Jack takes after his father in his relentless pursuit of women - it's rare that Charles is without a girlfriend, though many of them wonder about Helen's picture being everywhere. He says he's trying to keep her spirit alive for the boys, and Jack has been known to borrow this excuse more than once in an attempt to get into a lady's knickers.

Jack's acceptance into Hogwarts College definitely came as a shock to the Slopers, who aren't exactly the wealthiest of people. Jack was sent off to the school only after a long, incredibly passive-aggressive battle between father and son (Charles had issues with Jack's tuition being covered in even the smallest of respect since they certainly wouldn't be able to afford the entire thing - call it pride - and wasn't Jack doing just fine at regular old primary school?; Jack didn't care either way). And he absolutely loved it! His first few weeks at the school saw copious amounts of letters sent home, each one detailing some new wonder to behold. His family grew quite bored with the letters, and since then Jack has grown quit lax about keeping in touch with his family.

Being sorted into Gryffindor was good for Jack - he made good friends both in his House and out, quickly established himself as Least Likely to Do Anything (or should it be Most Likely to Do Nothing?), and discovered his passion for the great sport of football. He even did a stint on the team when Fred and George Weasley left the school, but that didn't exactly go so well. He spent much of his time on the team hurting more than helping - literally. He swears he still has a dent in his head from his collision with the goalposts (it certainly didn't do anything the help his intelligence level, that's for sure). Jack lived out his school days in blissful ignorance of the outside world - he still does, in fact. He went to school, returned home for the holidays, hung out with his family, and then returned to school when that was over. However, now that his final year at Hogwarts is beginning, he's starting to realize that perhaps he should have a few life goals.
