THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD WEDDING INVITATIONS

Wedding is an important part of people’s life. It marks the start of a new chapter of their lives. A wedding is great fun and an occasion of festivity. And this fun is brought about by the presence of guests during the wedding ceremony. Now what plays an important part in getting these guests to the wedding is the wedding invitation. It is an important aspect of wedding planning.

A wedding invitation is a letter asking the recipient to attend a wedding. It is typically written in formal, third-person language and mailed well in advance before the wedding date. Like most other invitations, this too is issued by the host himself/herself of his/her close family members on his/her behalf. Etiquette regarding the text on a formal wedding invitation varies according to country, culture and language. In Western countries, a formal invitation is mostly composed in formal, third-person language, saying that the hosts request the recipient’s presence in their wedding and giving its date, time, and place. In most weddings, bride’s parents act as the hosts and thus the text normally begins with their names. In the some weddings, groom’s parents are the co-hosts and in this case their names are also added in the invitation.

Printing and Design

Methods like  engraving, lithography, thermography, letterpress printing, sometimes blind embossing, compression plate process, or offset printing are employed in preparing wedding invitations. Recently, some people have started printing invitations in their own homes using a laser printer. Calligraphic fonts are often employed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the invitations. Historically, wedding invitations were hand-written. But as people started inviting more and more guests to their wedding, it became difficult to prepare so many hand-written cards and this is where printing technology came in. Tissues are often provided by manufacturers to place over the printed text. Originally, the purpose of the tissue was to reduce smudging or blotting, especially on invitations poorly printed or hastily mailed before the ink was fully dried, but improved printing techniques mean they are now simply decorative.

Mailing

It is always advisable to mail wedding invitations in double envelopes. The inner envelope should fit well into the outer envelope. The outer envelope is glued for sealing and addressing. More recently, the inner envelope is often left out in the interest of saving money, paper, and postage. In some cases, a pocketfold replaces the inner envelope.
