Spammers and Invite Codes

Greetings Journalers,

I apologize for the lack of updates about what's going on. We've been very busy working on other projects and with real life. That said, yes, we're requiring all new accounts to be created using Invite codes. Why? Because we're experiencing a massive amount of spam and it's causing a lot of problems on the server, specifically the database system. Any Permanent, Early Adopters, and Special Early Donator Accounts and Paid Accounts should have the ability to generate invite codes. I would like to extend the opportunity for everyone else to get invite codes without paying a single cent. Anyone who can report spam blogs to me (a comment on this entry will suffice) will get an invite code PER spam blog. A minimum of 10 spam blogs must be reported to get your invite code(s). I can then manually generate codes for you. If you'd rather pay, we have Permanent and Paid Accounts for sale. Permanent Accounts can be purchased for a one time $100 fee - payment can be sent to payments@scribbld.com (remember to include your username).

As mentioned we're not really actively developing Scribbld.com -- however there are some outstanding features and bugs we'd like to finish up and close in the near future.

Update: I've run out of codes, and it looks like they decided to remove the code/module which allows me to manually generate as many codes as I want from the codebase :( Boooo!! I'll try to come up with someone to fix this, in the meantime if you're feeling generous you can still let me know spam journals and I can get them removed from our site.

Hey, I'm sorry to bother you, but I just bought a paid account in order to generate an invite code for a friend, and my userinfo still says I'm an early free member, and when I try to generate an invite code, I get the message that says I'm not eligible to create any codes. :c What gives? I can provide a transaction ID number if necessary.

So I take it since you are allowing people to buy permanent accounts this means you have intentions to keep the site functional for the long-run? If so, thats a major relief :) I still use both of my journals on a regular basis.

It'll certainly be in the same state it's in right now for an indefinite amount of time, forever really. I just don't have the time or attention span to fix any of the outstanding issues. But it'll certainly be around for a long long long long time. :)

Posterous, as you might know, will be shutting down on the 30th of this month, leaving millions of users to scramble for new places to locate their blogs. This isn't because the service was unpopular. In fact, it was one of the larger providers, but Twitter wanted to do an acquire, taking a shortcut in order to pick up maybe about eight employees.

This, normally, really annoys the users, but something special and unprecedented is happening this time, around. If one checks, at a time when millions of people need to move right now, blogging hosts are either breaking down or unavailable, having shut off registration, which means that these millions of people are going to lose years of work, in many cases, having nowhere to move their content.

Think about the words "millions of people, getting really, really angry" - have you ever lived in a major city? These are not good words to hear. This is usually the prelude to something really, really bad. I don't know what that something is, but look at the odds. If only one in a thousand people decides that he needs to lash out, that's thousands of people running amok. Chaos. Pure, horrible chaos, and you know some of those people will turn out to be hackers.

This sounds like a huge mess in the making. Scribbld would seem to have just painted a bullseye on itself. We can all hope for the best, of course, but how to put this gently? Have you ever noticed how few veteran Russian roulette players there are? I'm not saying that somebody is going to go postal over this, just that luck has a way of running out.

Did I mention the angry mob?

Dude... This is kind of pessimistic. If people reeeeally want to sign up here, there *are* ways of getting invite codes. It's not as if Scribbld is locked away with a huge 'no entry' sign up... Spambots, however, cannot easily get invite codes. IMO, invite codes are a positive thing, and more-than-likely temporary.

Unrelated but help?

hello, my name is Kierstin and I am a big fan of this site and I've enjoyed using it for some time now. It's helped me out greatly with keeping my writing organized and accessible... until this morning. I've spent the better part of an hour looking how to email someone about two suspended accounts I have.

I am unsure as to why they are suspended. I use this site to help me in writing and it's difficult to do with a lot of my work gone. Is there anyway someone can email me @ jupiter_roxx@hotmail.com to figure this out. I can correct anything I may have done wrong, but I can't think why a journal and my community would get suspended.

Sorry this is off topic but I didn't know where else to go.

OK... apparently I'm not allowed to generate a code, even though I've never generated a code at all. Awesome. So what are we supposed to do? I don't really think this is a good system if current non-spam users can't invite new non-spam users.
