Review on the new Devil May Cry Trailer.
Okay, so this has probably been a long time coming, and I think I held back on a review of the new DmC trailer because I wanted to keep an open mind about the whole thing, but the more and more I watch this shit, the more I hear reactions from the fans, and the more I just think about the damn thing, I've come to the conclusion that I do not like and want no part in this new game.
The trailer shows a thin, almost scrawny, dark-haired "Dante" being held in an insane asylum, being questioned by a doctor while he's strung up from the ceiling. Okay, first off, all the "WHO THE FUCK IS THIS AND WHY IS HE CALLING HIMSELF DANTE?" shit aside, what kind of hospital for the insane is this? Holy shit, I know psychology has had something of a dark past, but it's not like he's in a POW camp in fucking North Korea.
Although, I think I'd be able to buy Dante being stuck in a North Korean death camp more than I would him being stuck in a goddamn insane asylum.
My digression aside, this new "Dante" seems to not only not look like Dante, but seems to lack the smartass personality that has made many, including myself, come to love the character. Sure, they've tried to make him look edgy, giving him a cigarette and making him look like he's been beat to hell and back, giving him scars, but that doesn't make up for the fact that there's something missing. Whatever made Dante into Dante is visibly gone. Basically, this "Dante" seems to only be him in name only, and this trailer...makes the game not even look like Devil May Cry, but something else.
Most of you have probably heard about me bitching at people who complained about Devil May Cry 4, and the fact that no one gave Nero a chance before deciding to hate on the game because there was a new character, and honestly, my opinion on that still stands. However, in this context, I don't find myself being as forgiving. This isn't new characters, this is an unwanted, and quite frankly, unneeded reboot where Ninja Theory took Dante, inserted their director as him, took away his personality, and from the looks of it, threw out any previous story.
This isn't a slight change or a progression of storyline. This is an upheaval.
This is essentially Ninja Theory taking out everything fans loved about the game and throwing it into the garbage, and I don't think I can approve of that. I would like to give the game it's fair shot, but at the same time, I couldn't bring myself to buy it because it would bring Capcom one step closer to believing it would be okay to make another of the same. And I'd rather not risk that on a "fair shot".
Why? Because companies understand one thing: Money. The bottom line. They don't care about fan rage, they don't give a shit about petitions, hell, Capcom doesn't even give a fuck as to what it's Japanese branch thinks of this little development (I hear rumors that they're none too pleased over there). The one and only thing they understand is money, and if this game cost more to make than they got back in sales, they'll go back to the old game set faster than you can blink, and Ninja Theory will have to go make shitty fucking games somewhere else.
My considered advice: If you're a fan of the DMC series, and you don't want this shit to repeat itself in the next game, don't buy this coming one. Rent. Beg. Borrow. Steal. (Okay...maybe not steal.) Send Capcom a message they can understand: If you completely fuck up our characters, we're not buying your games. Because, I'm telling you, that's the ONLY message they're going to fully understand.
