Weekly Art History Lesson! (#2)

Giorgio Vasari, Italian Mannerist painter, who is better known for his biographies of artists than his own paintings now, despite his popularity during his lifetime.

An image of Le Vite delle più eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architettori (Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects - commonly referred to as The Lives), Vasari's book which started the documentation of artists and their work - and filled with anecdotes and amusing gossip about the lives of the artists that he wrote about.

Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1574) was born in Arezzo, Tuscany. He became a student of the arts, being apprenticed to a skilled painter of stained glass (Guglielmo da Marsiglia) at an early age. Later, he would become a friend of the artist Michelangelo, whose work would become an influence on paintings by Vasari. This friendship began Vasari's interest in the lives of artists in various areas, though most notably painters and sculptors.

His Lives showed the beginning of the tradition of writing in a biographical and encyclopedic that is still common in art history today, although he lacked much of the objectivity and date-placing that is common today. Many art historians only consider his work valid in its own right when supplemented with later scholarly works that detail the exact dates of artists and works mentioned. Still, he is credited with being the first person to use the term "Renaissance" in print (though it was a term in use previously to describe the art movement that was being written about), and his Lives was published in two editions (1550 and 1568), the second after he left his home in Florence for a trip to Rome, in which he included information on several Roman artists (most notably Titian) that were absent in the Florentine-centric first edition. This bias towards Florentine art is dramatic and ever-present in his writing, and he credits many artists from Florence with much of the pivotal and important developments in the art world in his time.

Vasari is known as a Mannerist painter in his own work, though history has largely overlooked a fair amount of his actual artistic work, and focused more on his writing. Mannerism is an era of painting closely placed near the High Renaissance and Baroque periods, and is most well known for its elongated figures and use of intense color to create dynamic scenes, usually of people in intense group situations.

A Vasari fresco painting inside of the Duomo of Florence - it was left unfinished by Vasari himself, however, and was later completed by Federico Zuccari and Giovanni Balducci.

Vasari is also known for his success as an architect, and is best known for his design of the loggia (columned outdoor corridor) of the Palazzo degli Uffizi, as well as the passage connecting the Uffizi with the Palazzo Pitti in this area of his work. These architectural features exhibited a strong knack for city planning, creating public-friendly plazas and spaces around the buildings, and creating gorgeous facades that exist to this day.

While history may not have remembered Vasari the artist as much as Vasari the author and architect, his accomplishments still live on in his native Florence today - he was one of the founders of the Accademia del Disegno (now the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze) - the Florence Academy of Fine Arts - which houses Michelangelo's David and still functions as a school for developing artists wishing to surround themselves with the work of the old masters today.

Do you have any favorite themes or subjects? My writing is mostly all Law and Order: CI. I'm detectivebear (and others) over on LJ. My photography is all available light, photo of opportunity stuff. My graphic design work is fanart.
What got you started doing your particular art form(s)? I was doing graphic design work just for fun before I knew what it was. I got into photography and painting while in college.
Do you have any sources of inspiration? What are they? Fanart is inspired by fandom and everything else I pull out of my ass.
Who are your favorite artists? Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and others whose names I can't remember.

Weekly Art History Lesson!

I'm going to try something new here, and begin posting a new art history lesson each week, just because I'm an art history major, and that's something fun I can enjoy... Hopefully you guys will get something out of it too!

John Singer Sargent's Portrait of Madame X, 1884.

You are now viewing one controversial painting! Rumored to be of American ex-pat Virginie Gautreau, who lived in Paris, this painting was a big shock when exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1884, partially for it's subject matter (and the decolletage of the subject matter!). The original painting had one strap of the gown falling over the subject's shoulder, leading to scandal (and the request for the painting to be removed from exhibition by Virginie's mother). Later, Sargent "fixed" the strap (as we see it today), and x-ray analysis of the painting has been able to uncover it's original position. Unfortunately, even this did not help Sargent, and he ended up not receiving the success and acclaim he had hoped for with this large portrait - a long-term career in Paris was always out of his grasp, and eventually the American painter left for London and other parts of the globe seeking success.

The Portrait of Madame X we see here was eventually sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York by Sargent, though an unfinished duplicate painting of the same pose (with fallen shoulder strap on the gown) is in the Tate Gallery in London as well. When writing to the director of the Metropolitan Museum, Sargent said: "I suppose it is the best thing I have ever done."

This painting is now revered as one of the most famous John Singer Sargent pieces ever made, and is a personal favorite of mine. You can learn more about the Portrait of Madame X here, and more about the painter, John Singer Sargent, here.

Well, here it is: my first non "getting stuff set up" post to the community. Welcome to our (very few) members!

I'm hoping that each of you will soon fill out your introduction post (found on the community user info), and then move on to creating your member page. I have just posted a bunch of stuff in the various community categories, so take a look!

We need some themes and such, so if you have any ideas, please drop them in the suggestion box.

Challenge for January 2009: Use a New Material

Always wanted to try something a little different, but haven't given yourself the chance to take the risk? Here's your chance! Try something a little strange - a new type of paint, a new way of writing, drawing with oil pastels instead of pencils... anything that appeals to you! See what a new way of working will do for your art, and explore what different possibilities and drawbacks a different type of media or style has on your work!

Participants should show us their work by January 31st, and you can elect to submit your work for voting and award if you want - please make it clear when you post your work to the community. All entries (whether submitted for voting and award or not) will receive 15 points for participation, plus posting and per-piece points. You can do as many as you would like! The winner (if you guys submit your work to voting) will receive an additional 25 points.

This Week's Theme is...Nature. (Through Jan. 24th)

Post any of your artwork, old or new, that has something do do with nature or natural materials. Show us your landscape/outdoor photography, paintings of plants, pieces created using natural materials, poems about anything nature-related - really, anything that you think may fit the theme! Have at it and interpret at will!

Participants will get an extra 20 points in addition to points for posting/per art piece shown!
