When I was young I had very fine, handmade, mechanical toys. Small army men able to march around cities with working lamps and fairs with turning ferris wheels. I had fun with them, I suppose. I had more fun wrecking them than anything though, and the little men with their thin, kicking legs and exaggerated features used to keep me up nights, worried that they'd attack any part of me not bundled under the covers.

The constant sound of this age, of the clockwork, keeps me on edge. To this day the sound of gears winding down is one of the things that calms me the most.

I love the city.

I was worried at first. Worried sick as I traveled in, because there's not really anything to do on a train but worry. Except maybe re-read a book you've read five times already, or people watch in the food car. I worried about my meager funds and what I would do and where I would stay and who I would talk to. Turns out I didn't need to.

But then, things have a way of working themselves out, yeah? The universe may move naturally towards chaos, but it does it in the most sure and effective way.

I've heard many a bore try to sound clever by claiming that people are like tea, that you never know what you've got until you put them in hot water. I still think there's something to be said for checking the label.

I saw a woman last night who may have been high, not sure if it was drugs or life, but who was definitely dancing her way down Broadway. Not like simply skipping or walking funny; I mean dancing. She may have been playing air tambourine, as well.

So obviously, I had to create a story for her. (Obviously!)

She'd had a bad day. A really, really bad day, probably something at work went horribly wrong. Maaaaaaybe she got fired, but probably not. More likely she was passed over for a promotion. And it was a huge blow, because she was sorta counting on that promotion and the pay bump that went with it to make rent this month. But it went to the jackass that sits two cubicles down, the one that always smells like death, and instead of getting angry, she decided to dance her way home. Or maybe to the nearest bar.

Don't fret, Broadway Dancing Lady. Maybe you can team up with the Naked Cowboy. (Is he still around? Ugh, I haven't been at Times Square in ages.) Keep on dancin'!

A week after I left home I reached the royal city with no money and no one to go to. I was wandering the dark middle layer, not metaphorically between the dark and the light, but literally skirting the edges. I reached into my pocket, looking for enough money for a place to stay for the evening and found this instead, a torn page from one of the books I loved and my father never respected. It won't buy me anything--put food in my stomach, or a roof over my head--but it's worth the weight of my future, worth a freight zeppelin's haul.

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

Is there anything that uplifts you, even though other people think it's silly?
