Matters of State
Messengers arrive with official transport for Kassia, Marrina, and MacKenzie, all duly informing them that the time has come to speak with Prince Namor regarding the whole unfortunate string of events that recently took place.

"I really don't like official transport. It cuts down on my already too little swimming time. I'm going to get fat up here," Kassia sighed before joining Mac. "That and when Dad sends for us in official capacity it probably isn't great."

Great. This was not exactly a conversation Marrina had been looking forward to.

But she'd go.

The trio will be escorted to Namor's study, where he is going over petitions, records and other bits of Atlantean law as he waits for his family members to arrive.

When they enter, Namor rises and comes around the table to speak greet them each in turn. His daughters receive kisses to the forehead and warm embraces, while Mac is favored with a nod and one Namor's rare smiles.

"I am glad that all of you could come. There are important matters to discuss requiring Atlantis and the future. Refreshments will arrive shortly. Please, be seated, all of you." Namor requests.

Namor looks at his family members in turn, before going to sit down at his desk.

"Please be seated. We have much to discuss."

He takes a moment to gather his thoughts, before speaking again.

"It appears to me that our dominion over Atlantis is in grave danger, made all the more grave by the fact that it appears that the three of you want little or nothing to do with Atlantis." Namor says.

"That is not an accusation, merely a statement of what I and others perceive. I do not fault any of you for not wishing to be involved with debacles like what occurred with Mason Jeffries; spectacles like those shame us all.

But I must know if any or all of you wish to cut your ties to Atlantis before we go forward. I must consider...contingencies for the line of succession if such is the case." Namor says, looking at each of them in turn.

Mac blinked. "No, Sir. I -- I mean, I obviously, I don't want to be heir; you probably know I never did. I'd rather not be in Atlantis full-time, admittedly but... cut ties, no. Definitely not." Blood is thicker than water and all that. He knows it wasn't an accusation but he doesn't want to let Namor and Grandmother and Mom down.

Kassia looks like she's been slapped and it takes her a few minutes to speak and when she does, it's quietly.

"I spent my whole childhood trying to get here and the first thing you did was send me back to the surface. You haven't even given me a chance."

"Kassia, I do not mean to say that you do not care for Atlantis, but...you have a human life that you must keep up, even more than Marrina. Your mother saw to that. I only want you to finish your schooling. When you've gained your majority, if you wish to return to Atlantis full-time, I will be the first to welcome you." Namor says soothingly.

"You have spent most of your life among humans, like Marrina and I must be mindful of this. Atlantis is very different in how it treats those like all of us. Hybrids, we are called politely." Namor says.

"MacKenzie, you are a credit to your mother and father, but I know that rulership has never been your desire. For a time, you were all that I had, but your burden will be eased somewhat. Still, I hope that you and Kassia will consider joining the military. Atlantis needs warriors like both of you, and you've both proven yourself capable of holding your own in a fight. It is an honorable thing." Namor says.

"Marrina has the most difficult balance here, as she is the first daughter and heir. But I know that you had a life before Atlantis, Daughter. I will not ask you to give that up. Morever, I do not wish for any of you to feel as though you are merely breeding stock. But you must know that there are rumblings, calls for a member of the royal family with blue skin.

Can you believe that there are those among the nobility that think I'm trying to turn us all into airbreathers?" Namor asks.

Marrina frowned, but her posture didn't change. There was some steel in the spine of the hybrid-girl, in spite of her usual pleasant and small town manner. When she'd finally had a chance to connect to her long-lost father, she hadn't known what to expect. Certainly, she'd never thought it would lead to the near death of the man she loved or the other trauma it would inflict upon her teammates. She still carried guilt for what had happened to Mel.

The concerns of Atlantis at large were laughable, but yet somehow understandable. None of them were full-blooded Atlanteans, though at least she herself was also largely aquatic. But her own DNA carried with it the blood of the Plodex, monstrous creatures, a monstrous legacy in her own body just waiting to be unlocked.

"Atlantis is my home," she said. "As much as the surface is. I'm not about to give up on it."

She frowned again. "But I don't know if I'm at all fit to lead. Don't know if I really have that kind of mettle."

"

Mac sets a hand on Kassi's; he can tell she's probably reading this worse than he is.

She frowns, a little.

"The color of our skin shouldn't have a damned thing to do with how 'Atlantean' we are. When the Doombots showed up, it wasn't blue that was running out to stand the guard."

"You are strong enough to lead, Marrina. I have faith in you. Your mother had many of the same fears when she and I married. She was afraid the people would not accept her and for a time, there was resistance, but she won them over with her courage, her heart and her determination. I have no doubt that you can do the same." Namor tells his eldest daughter.

It made Namor proud to see them all support and defend each other. Atlantis would be in good hands when his day was done. He was certain of it.

"No, it should not, Kassia, but even I must admit that Atlantis does have parallels to the surface world. Our family is more powerful than any blue-skinned Atlantean. We can breathe air and water without aid where they cannot.

They fear us because we represent change and evolution among our people. And unless certain...concessions are made, more people like Draconia and Vishni will be able to win over the hearts and minds of those who are not certain in their loyalty." Namor intones, looking at his family members.

"To that end, we must discuss what the future holds for our house. Mason Jeffries has won the right to be Marrina's consort. I would prefer not to sit through another two rounds of the insanity that we recently saw, so I must ask you, MacKenzie and Kassia: Are either of you in love with a surface-worlder that I should be aware of?" he asks.

Mac looks down a little. "We're still early enough that I'd rather ask her to dump me than put her through that, but there's this girl. She's on the Fantastic Four, and she's incredible. But if things don't work out in the long, I can resolve to just date blue girls. Keep it simpler."

Namor exhales deeply. It has come to this.

"I will not ask either of you to end your relationships for me. It will only weaken us in the long run. If any of you choose, at a later date, to reconsider your love lives, we will discuss it then." Namor says, leaning back in his chair.

"It falls to me to silence the voices of dissent so that all of you can live in peace. In truth, I should have done this long ago, so that none of you ever needed to worry what the future held." Namor says, bracing himself for their reactions.

"I discussed the matter with my newest vizier while you were all away.

I will take a wife from among the nobility of Atlantis. She will bear me a child, who will follow Marrina and Kassia in the line of succession, and hopeful put an end to the rumors that I am trying to turn us into a nation of air-breathers." Namor says stoically.

"It is the least I can do to give all of you peace."

Mac's optimism springs eternal. He looks at his cousins. "Aw, come on, that's not the point; it'll just put some extra gills in the family so people'll stop whining. Which'll be handy in case you two don't want kids! We've taken out the real traitors already; we can't have that much craziness!"

"MacKenzie has the right of my intentions in doing this. As I said, you two will not be removed from the line of succession and anyone trying to harm /any/ of you will still have to go through me.

But, Kassia and Marrina, this is where both of you must come into your own. You will need to win the hearts and minds of the people in order to secure the kingdom. I cannot do this alone any longer." Namor says.

"I am doing my utmost not to force any of you to choose between the surface and Atlantis, but you /must/ meet me on common ground here." Namor says.

Mac's comment about not wanting kids hit home for Marrina. Of the few things she was sure of, it was that her trying to have kids was in the bad things category. Not with her alien-half.

Namor nods at the words of both Mac and Marrina.

"Your cousin and your sister have the right of it, Kassia. Even more than they, you were born of two words. MacKenzie's mother lives here, and Marrina's adoptive parents understand that she is not fully human.

You, on the other hand, have been forced to hide your whole life. If Emma Frost's daughter vanishes from the public view, there will be questions that are not easily answered. Once you are eighteen, it will be easy enough to say you're 'studying abroad', allowing you to return to Atlantis full-time, if that is what you want." Namor says.

He looks at each of them in turn, trying to impress upon them the point of what he's doing.

"I am not trying to create a new heir and push any or all of you aside. Just the opposite; if the Atlantean people can see someone who looks like them in among the ruling house, it will allay the rumor-mongers and these vile 'Atlantis First' fools who are insisting that I'm trying to do everything from enslave those of blue skin to raising Atlantis from the depths.

Sadly, we are running out of alternatives in which to convince people of my sincerity." Namor says.

She didn't like anything he was saying. She'd seen the way people responded to the crap with "Doom" and she had a really bad feeling about what the reaction would be if suddenly there was a blue and less-likely to breathe air option in the Royal line.

She also worried about the relationship with said blue child. A child that would grow up with Namor. A child that would have his attention.

She was being exiled--that's how it felt--and Namor was getting another child he could bond with.

"Well, you're the king," she said quietly. "You have to do what you think is the right choice."

Kassi just wanted to go home now, but she wasn't sure what home even was.

Unlike Kassi, Marrina hadn't known her father until she was already an adult. She called the Smallwoods "mom" and "dad." Though she had dreamed of one day getting to know her father and to learn more of her mother, she had often felt unprepared for the world into which she had been thrust.

A little sibling who would grow up in Atlantis. Who would be more Atlantean than any of them.

"I'm not sure I like the idea of a child being used for politics like that," she said finally. "But I guess that's how politics works."

"If anyone has any better ideas that would ally the concerns of millions of people and the nobility speaking for them, I would love to hear them." Namor says sincerely.

"I only offer the suggestion that will be presented to me in absence of all others." he says.

"Yeah, it's admittedly awkward, Marrina, but plenty of kids have gotten by like that, and it's not like he or she's not going to have normal family support."

Speaking of normal family support, Kassi looked like she was taking this weirdness really hard. Mac's hand started to go out for hers.

He frowns. "I sure can't think of anything, Sir. I bet this stuff's a little easier in places with written constitutions. The rules right there where you can point to them instead of general feelings about cultural norms that everyone can just get nervous about." Sure, American politics were scary and fractured, but they at least had a few things nailed down on paper to settle some things.

Namor did not like the effect this idea was having upon Kassia, but he still had to consider the idea.

"For now, we will table this portion of the discussion. I will speak with my advisers and see what other ideas avail us." Namor says.

"In the meantime, I would like all of you to be present for the Annual War Games this year. This is an event our people believe in greatly, so I will ask that your significant others remain at home, for those who have them." Namor says simply.

"I will only ask for a few days of your time for the celebration and the feast that will occur afterward. When this is done, you may all return home. Can I count on each of you to be there?" Namor asks.
