fun with memes?
So, we're testing on Dreamwidth and I set up a post initially as a random 'fake' meme for us to play with. Well, then it turned into 'can we make comments thread'? Followed shortly thereafter by 'can we make comments paginate'? That was great - we got to page 3 or so. Well, then we decided we needed to test comment limits - aka: How many comments can we put onna post before it asplode?!

The dev's said that 5000 is the limit before the system makes you CAPTCHA each time you post (then it's 10,000, just like on LJ). So, inna IRC chat, synecdochic asked if I *really* wanted folks to spam that entry. I told her 'yes - really', so she posted this entry in her journal to start off some friendly spamming... then it was posted on lol_meme on JF, which means - yeah, LOTS and LOTS of comments!

To be honest, it was an amusing, yet interesting experiment to watch. I literally watched it go from 3 pages to about 20 in under 30 minutes. I took my dog outside for 2 minutes and came back to about 3 new pages. We got random shit comments, recipes, feedback on the site scheme and other aspects, number sequences, part of the alphabet, random facts, pieces of fanfic, questions about nothing, memers ranting about non-memers not knowing how to thread the meme correctly, synecdochic 's random graphs of the server output, cat macros, poetry, pages of lorem ipsum, you name it! It went on for 83 pages of comments. (And yes, I turned off e-mail notifications!) The only thing I didn't see was a Rick-roll and I was strangely disappointed by that. Then I got to page 83 and Rick-roll in text!

But, if you wanna know how to make play dough, you've now got the recipe! =)

They hit 5000 comments about 0500 this morning! (Me, I was in bed asleep!) And yes, I did scan through all 83 pages of comments - just to see what was there!

Folks can still comment if they'd like, but they'll have to CAPTCHA each time. Okay, that's not true - the system is currently set to max at 5000 comments. When we turn on the other limit, we'll get it going again!

All-in-all, a successful test - of a lot of things! The servers took a bit of a beating and we freaked out our sysadmin a little, but DW persevered swimmingly! That - that was fun!
