Narcissa. Come tell me the news. What says the birds?

Aunt Lucy, you know I shouldn't indulge too much.

And you know that it is always best to share your information, lest it gather as cobwebs in your mouth and you can no longer speak.

I only ask for the news so that I may spare you from such a fate, Narcissa.

Of course, Aunt Lucy.

Well, I saw the Greengrass girl and the Sewlyn boy kissing the other day. They didn't notice me. They were too preoccupied with each other's tongues.

Is that so? There seems to be an abnormal amount of coupling going on these days. It seems highly inappropriate.

This Sewlyn boy. Tell me about him. I cannot say I have ever understood the Greengrass way of selecting suitors before, but perhaps this one has improved the method.

I agree.

Oh, I'm quite sure her parents didn't choose this suitor for her. I don't know why they would, he's almost as bad as a Nott. I think his name is Michael? I have no idea. It may be Eugene. I haven't taken the time to learn it. In any case, Eugene as we'll call him is completely unsuitable for anyone respectable. He's short and pimply and a Sewlyn for Merlin's sake.

You don't say! What a ridiculous choice by the silly girl. Is there something wrong with her? I could say that the only acceptable excuse she could have is if she were deaf, dumb, and blind, but I will not say that, for that is something one keeps in one's head, and does not say aloud.

Narcissa. How are your studies coming along?

Well, she isn't exactly a catch herself.

My studies are wonderful, Aunt Lucy, thank you for asking. I am doing much better in Potions, thanks to the Snape boy. I just greatly wish he did choose better company. That Evans girl is No Good.

Snape boy? I have not heard of this Snape boy. Who is he? And who is this Evans girl? You terrible child, you tell me nothing. I dare say you are slipping in my favor.

Auntie Lucretia! I have told you about him numerous times. His name is Severus Snape, and he helps me in Potions. He's rather nice, and very intelligent. Evans is Lily Evans who is a mudblood that he insists on talking to.

Snape. Is he Pureblood? I cannot say I know that name.

Narcissa, he is far from intelligent if he is speaking with a Mudblood. I cannot say I approve of such relations for you if he continues to make such poor social decisions. Your parents have worked far too hard on raising you to be the pinnacle of respectability for you to toss it aside by a simple association with a Mudblood-lover.

He is in Slytherin, at the very least, so I think he's good enough.

But he hates cousin Sirius and that awful James Potter. He must be good, Aunt Lucy. I'm a wonderful judge of character, you know.

Do not speak of your cousin in my presence. Or ever. It is not appropriate.

Strange, then, that he chose to befriend someone as low class as this Evans girl. What is her appeal?

I'm sorry, Aunt Lucretia, it won't happen again.

I think he mentioned that they grew up near each other.

You are forgiven, Narcissa.

How unbecoming of this day in age to allow Mudbloods to live so close to Us. It seems completely distasteful, no?

I am glad to hear it.

It does. I simply can't believe it. I'll talk some sense into him.

I should hope you would, Narcissa. You have a very convincing way about you. He'd be a fool to not take your wisdom to heart.

I do approve of his ability to help you with Potions, though. That is good of him. And your other classes? I assume those are satisfactory? I ask these not to be nosy, dear, I do hope you do not mind.

He would be. And I'd ruin him if he ignored me.

He certainly has potential, I think. I know you are not being nosy, dear Auntie. My other classes are very well. Our Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is absolutely dismal this year. I haven't learned a single new thing.

Disgraceful what Dumbledore has done with that school. He finds the most hideous nobodies to teach. I remember my teacher was a fine Professor who had more knowledge than the whole of Britain. Where does he find these disgraceful replacements?

I have absolutely no idea. It's extremely disheartening, however, since the teachers can't seem to stay for more than a year.

Charms are wonderful. The professor is ever so competent, and wonderfully nice. And helpful.
