Giving Thanks
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." JFK

In America today is a day for being thankful for the things in people's lives. Today was a day to celebrate family, friends, prosperity and health with food, family and friends. It is a time to reflect on what is important us and to recognize the gratitude we hold for having those things in our lives.

Arthur wasn't one to adhere to surface customs or holidays, but Thanksgiving was one that he liked. It was all about the food.

So of course he was going to attend the JLA/JSA annual Thanksgiving dinner. He even sent a message to Mera to see if she would be interested. He'd use any excuse to see her.

Karen had been barred from the kitchen on account of trying to swipe a chocolate cream pie. She helped with the setting of the table, and making sure that there would be enough seats for everyone. They always expected a big crowd.

Barbara had sent out an email to Helena, Zinda, and Dinah, inviting them to Thanksgiving dinner if they weren't busy. Strictly out of costume, as she'd invited her dad over too. Barbara wheeled herself around her apartment, getting everything ready.

Helena showed up with an apple pie and a cherry pie from her favorite bakery. She also brought with her three four bottles of wine.

Zinda arrived with a couple of bottles for mixing later and a covered casserole dish. She loved to cook and her sweet potatoes were the best, if she said so herself!

"Did the dancing boys get here yet?" she asked cheerfully when the door opened.

After explaining to Ollie that Conner was just a friend, Mia dressed up in a black dress that she'd picked out with Dinah on a recent shopping trip, and got ready for Conner to pick her up.

She wasn't sure how many people the Kents were expecting, but she brought an apple pie from the bakery down the street from the apartment she where she lived with Ollie and Connor.

Conner arrives and introduces himself to Connor and Ollie, if necessary, trying not to stare at Mia.

Once they're out of the apartment, Conner looks at her.

"Um, you look great." he says. His phone rings just then and he takes it out and looks at the caller ID.

Cassie.

He send the call to voice-mail and puts his phone away again.

"You ready to go?" he asks.

"Well, you know what comes next, then. Just hold on to me and we'll be in Smallville in no time." Conner says, moving forward to scoop Mia up in his arms.

Once she's comfortable, he lifts off and flies them both toward the East, speeding up once he's outside of Star City.

Minutes later, they land at the Kent Farm in Smallville, in the loft of the Kent Barn.

"We're here. I have to split some firewood, but you can go up the house if you don't want to wait." he says.

"You are the first person to put 'Farmboy' and 'Glory' in the same sentence." Conner laughs, walking down the stairs the lower level and going to the logs that he'd brought in earlier.

He stands a log upright, then brings his fist down in the center of it, splitting it into with more force than a regular man could with an axe. he takes the two neatly chopped pieces and sets them aside, then grabs another log.

"I always wondered how Superman lived on a farm his whole life, but honestly...I can't see myself living any other way, really. The city is nice, but it's so...quiet here." he says.

Bruce
[info]thedarkknight
2010-11-25 03:37 pm UTC (link)
Tonight, Bruce Wayne is making sure that the Martha Wayne Homeless Shelter in Gotham City is getting hot Thanksgiving Dinners prepared for all the men, women and children in residence on this holiday evening.

Every year, his mother helped out at several soup kitchens while his father offered free physicals to any in residence. They would have dinner beforehand and then Bruce would choose which parent he went out with for the evening. Each year, he'd chosen his father, considering it the more exciting of the two tasks.

Every year since he came back to Gotham to begin his war on crime, Bruce has chosen to follow his mother's example, first by opening these shelters, and second by rolling up his sleeves and serving meals until 11pm.

Once he's done here, he'll hit the streets and make sure that every criminal in Gotham understands that Batman doesn't give free passes on Thanksgiving.

For now, though, he serves each person that comes through the line with a smile and a hot meal, and several of them blink in surprise that Gotham's Favorite Son would choose to do this for people he's never met. The press also covers this, and he invites a few of them to join in helping out also.

Few of them refuse.

"We /could/ go to the JLA/JSA Thanksgiving Dinner, if you like. Get everyone used to you being there and all. Or we can find a place that does Thanksgiving Dinner and just have a small dinner to ourselves.

Probably the last small dinner we'll ever have." Hal says.

Re: Hal/Carol

"Only six? I was aiming higher, like twelve. I mean, it would take six kids just to run the whole company after you've turned into the Billion-Dollar Princess. We'd need at /least/ six more to fly the planes.

Actually, we'd better just go for an even twenty to beat out the Duggers and make sure the planes are adequately staffed along with rotating back-ups." Hal says, trying not to laugh at what he believes is Carol's incoming expression of horror at the idea of twenty kids.

Horror is right! Hal looked far too earnest about the subject. Until he mentioned twenty. Even that was too many for Hal Jordan.

She elbowed him lightly. "Are you planning to have a few of these kids? I certainly can't have them all."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Re: Hal/Carol
[info]highballjordan
2010-11-26 09:16 am UTC (link)
Hal laughs aloud. "Okay, twenty might be a little much. One of the upsides to you getting pregnant at any point would be that you'd /have/ to hire another assistant, which you seem to be avoiding like the plague." Hal says.

He looks down at her with a serious expression on his face, putting all jokes aside.

"I've been thinking about kids a lot lately, Carol. I've been thinking about what I could teach a child, too. My dad didn't live long enough to see me grow up and find a woman who'd make an honest man of me. I love playing with my niece and nephew. It used to be enough to be 'Cool Uncle Hal' who took them to the park or out for a hot dog, then returned them home." Hal says, phrasing his next words carefully.

"That's not really enough anymore. I'd like to have big family dinners with my brother's family, my family and friends, and celebrate stuff like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Independence Day." Hal says.

"I'd like to have a family and I can't think of anyone better to do it with." he says.

"Girls? I think boys would be much more appropriate, don't you?" Hal asks. Girls would be karmic payback for his reputation over the years, which is why the idea of daughters scares the crap out of him.

"Oh, I don't mean they need to be here by next year. I'd just like that to be a consideration someday. That's all." he smiles.

"That's good to know. Even my organizational skills would be stretched for that timeframe."

"Honestly, I haven't thought about kids in a very long time. I wanted the whole package - husband, kids, company. Haven't had much luck with the first requirement." She smiled, indicating it was okay to find humor the idea. "But I can safely promise we can put it on the consideration list."
