08;     first crush

"Now now, Grayson. Don't you think you're being the tiniest bit rash?"

From behind the protection of her elder brother, nine-year-old Juliana Wilkes peered out somewhat hesitantly. Thin hands clutched insistently onto the hem of Amery's jumper as he placed himself in between the fueding children, and--as far as Jules was concerned--into the middle of the lion's den.

To set the record straight, hesitance was most certainly not a typical emotion for Juliana to experience when it came to most anything that she had ever done to cross Grayson. In fact, one could safely say that she had indeed made a point of causing these sorts of issues, much to the disdain of all involved and not. It was, however, fair to say that she had never before done something to offend him on accident.

Ah no, and therein lay her current dilemma. You see, without premeditation, there was no chance to launch pre-emptive measures in order to assure a general lack of demise--or at the very least she could expect what was coming to her enough to rattle up a defense. But now was different... And really, if she had to choose, being caught unawares in the midst of chapter three of Ма́стер и Маргари́та and unexpectedly beared down upon in a furious tirade was not her ideal.

"Brother, get out of my way."

Grayson's insistent, petulant demand, accompanied by an attempted advance towards his sister, elicited a disapproving look from the older boy. Being the larger of the two, it required little effort for Amery to hold his brother back, then give him a proper nudge towards the library doors.

"Juliana is your sister, Grayson," he lectured, sounding very much like a kinder version of their hard-faced father in that moment. "I'm certain that she did not mean to cause you any distress; even if she did, you know better than to behave so violently."

Juliana watched the scene in front of her in nothing short of utter astonishment. While it was no new experience to have one of her brothers come to her rescue--even Grayson, at his best--, it was certainly untread territory to claim innocence and be believed. It wasn't as if she gave anyone any reason to think that she had not meant to cause harm with her actions, but for some reason, some way, Amery felt that she did not deserve the punishment that had been coming to her and was stepping in on her behalf. Even at the cost coming head-to-head with what they all knew was turning out to be a particularly frequent, particularly volatile personality developing within the youngest boy.

A frustrated noise accompanied the thud of a heavy volume against the carpet, and Jules glanced up to notice the eight-year-old Grayson with his arms now crossed, a copy of their mother's favorite Dostoyevsky novel laying splayed on the floor. A split second later, his foot connected with the book, sending it flying across the room and several pages fluttering loose.

"Fine," he returned with a hard glare, pointed directly at his sister. "But I'm telling maht' you just did that." Without another word, leaving only his stunned siblings in his wake, the youngest boy made his exit, not forgetting to slam the door on the way out.

New problems though there had arisen, Juliana could not help but to feel a wash of relief once Grayson was safely down the hall, his temper tantrum taken elsewhere. Her hands finally relaxing their hold on Amery, she leaned back against the arm of an nearby recliner and observed his back in something that could be called only starstricken admiration. If she was honest, it was a feeling she regularly experienced when she was around her elder brother. But it was especially prevalent at times such as this.

The way in which he understood and listened to her like none of her other siblings would... the way he would come to her rescue at first cry even when she indeed deserved her punishment... how very upstanding and handsome he looked when he stood tall and put himself in harm's way for her (whether that meant an irate Grayson or an imaginary monster in the closet)... She wasn't even certain that she knew how to recognize handsome in a man at her age, but whatever it meant, Juliana imagined that there could be no one moreso than her beloved brother.

Ah yes, Amery was her knight in shining armor; whether he knew it or not.

Amery let out a heavily discomfited sigh in the direction of the door. "He's not finished with you just yet, kiska," he muttered. With an air of knowing what must be done, he laid a hand on his sister's shoulder momentarily, and a quick peck to her forehead. "I will attempt to talk to Mother before Grayson gets too far."

She didn't say anything as he left, just watched him go, paralyzed by the tingling sensation that had rushed through her at the tiniest of kisses. It was hard to think, wasn't it, when you were so very in love with someone?

Sigh. Grayson could go on and dig her grave. It did not matter; Amery had certainly killed her first.

19;     bitchy (ft. grayson)

She was really rather rude, if he had to describe her.

Out of the corner of his eye, Grayson Wilkes peered disdainfully to his left side, catching for a moment the Cheshire cat smirk on his sister Juliana's face. Yes, she would be grinning, wouldn't she? It seemed to only cause the youngest Wilkes girl glee when she knew she had done something particularly conniving.

Entirely unperturbed by the mental glare she felt boring into the side of her head, Jules shifted just slightly away from Grayson and carefully brushed a hand across the shoulder of Amery, who stood just beside her in the line of teenagers waiting tensely in the large estate's entry way.

"Brother, you had a speck of dust on your robes," she confided softly, receiving a low sound of appreciation in return before she turned back to her proper position facing the grand staircase.

Grayson could have scoffed, but he was not nearly feeling the desire to allow her to know his frustration. Yes, of course let's make sure Amery is pristine and prepared, but let us deliberately hex to shreds all of younger brother's robes--

--and for what? That he had done the entire household a favor and rid it of that mangy, caterwauling feline she called a pet? Certainly, he did not understand quite how his deed warranted such extreme repercussions as this. Then again, Juliana had always been rather ... dramatic.

Clenching a fist within the pocket of his destroyed robes was the only way Grayson could think of to prevent himself from reaching over and wrapping his fingers around the blonde's neck right then and there. But no--he would already be in enough of a predicament when Mother and Father entered to see the peasantly state of his school robes greeting them upon their return from St. Petersburg. He did not need to add his sister's mangled body to the scene.

From somewhere above them, the click of heels sounded on marble flooring and he experienced an unfamiliar lump of dread form in his chest.

No, Juliana would live for now. But, perhaps after dinner...
