The Character
Basics --

Full Name: Tamsin Jane Applebee.
Gender: VERY female.
Wand: Ash with Unicorn hair, 10 inches. Springy, good for charms.
Birthday | Age: April 23rd 1976, aged 22.
Blood Status: Halfblood, but it's complicated (see below).
Sexual Orientation | Marital Status: Most definitely heterosexual. Tamsin believes that what goes on in the privacy of a consenting adult's bedroom is their own business, but she just doesn't understand the idea of being attracted to someone of the same sex. Single, and looking.
Occupation: Reserve Chaser for the Wigtown Wanderers.
Appearance: Given that she is a semi professional sportswoman, Tamsin is somewhat on the short side, standing at a dainty height of 5'3. However, just because she is small doesn't mean she's a weakling - her playing trademark is the ability to throw the ball astoundingly hard for a player of her size, sometimes using so much force that the Quaffle pushes its way past the Keeper's outstretched hands, impossible to be caught. As noted commentator Dickie Chamberlain said, 'Tamsin Applebee is a girl who can pack a punch'.
She doesn't have killer curves like some of the other girls on the team, but she is pretty content with the way she looks. The amount of training she does means she is in shape and toned, which is all she really wants in that department. She has dark brown hair which she normally wears off her face - in a plait when playing to keep it out of the way - and those who know her realise what when the hair comes down, so do Tamsin's reserves and then it's time to go out to play!
She has dark blue eyes that she usually accentuates with a little makeup, tending to dress to kill when not working, although she never dresses 'like a slag'.
Played By: Phoebe Tonkin (alternatively, Gemma Arterton).
Journal Name: [info]fillefidele

History --
Hometown: Aspatria, Cumbria, England.
Current Residence: London, England. Don't get Tamsin started on her five-floo commute. NB - have put London as a temporary measure - Julie and I have to sort out the living arrangements fully. :)
[Former] House | Years: Hufflepuff, graduating in 1994.
Family -- describe every important member and your characters relationship.
Foster Parents --
Aunt: Cassandra Leonora Macnair (née Applebee). 53 years old. Her mother's sister, formerly of Ravenclaw.
Uncle: Elliot Apollo Macnair. 62 years old. Cassandra's husband of 30 years, a cousin of Walden Macnair, the Ministry's former executioner of dangerous beasts.
Character/Family History
When some people say that their family is situation is complicated, they usually mean that one side doesn't speak to the other due to some slight, real or perceived. In Tamsin's case, however, things are complicated and then some. First of all, she doesn't know who her real parents actually are. As a very small child, barely out of her toddling years, her parents mysteriously vanished before dinner one evening and were never seen again. This was around the time that Voldemort first began his rise to power, and given that Tamsin has no memory of the event - her aunt later admitted to obliviating her 'to save her from the pain of remembering' - and also that Cassandra and Elliott were later arrested on suspicion of Death Eater activity, Tamsin later began to suspect that her aunt and uncle were somehow involved in their disappearance. There were several years before she could do anything about it, however.

Following the disappearance of her parents, she went to live with her aunt and uncle as Cassandra was the sister of her biological mother, and thus her nearest living relative. She has not been able to find out much about her life at this time, as Elliott Macnair's contacts at the Ministry of Magic (he himself traded in magical housing and property) were able to destroy her original birth records. Following this, she legally became the daughter of Cassandra and Elliott Macnair as she had been in their custody for over a year at this point.

Elliott Macnair was a man of great ambition who tried to live beyond his means. He himself was a pureblood, although his line couldn't be traced back as far as he would have liked, and some squibs and Muggles along the way were mysteriously rubbed out of the family tree. As such, any strategy that he realised he could employ to become more powerful and high in status was one he would use. Through his cousin, Walden Macnair, he joined the Death Eaters and took the Dark Mark in January 1981. With all the zealotry of the converted, Tamsin was suddenly not allowed to play with, talk to or even go near the local Muggle children. She desperately wanted to attend the local primary school, a view supported by her aunt, but Elliott refused permission and insisted that she attended lessons with a private tutor, a witch. He expressed a desire for her to be taught by a teacher who followed his blood purist ideals, but to his own resentment, he could not afford the fees of the high class governesses that his associates employed. In June that year, the governess was sacked - ostensibly for reading the story of Cinderella with the young Tamsin - and her uncle insisted that her aunt leave her job in the Floo office to tutor their ward. Reluctantly, Cassandra also took the Dark Mark. It was not long after that Voldemort suffered his first defeat by Harry Potter, and not for the first time, Cassandra filed for divorce. However, this was not due to being forced to take the Mark against her will, but as a matter of secrecy, Cassandra wished to support the Dark Lord's aims without being caught. Eventually, though, the charges against the couple were dropped, as was Cassandra's divorce petition.

Life carried on as normal for the next few years until, at the age of 11, Tamsin received her Hogwarts letter. Being brought up in a blood purist household, Tamsin was puzzled. If her aunt and uncle were so sure of their own pureblood status, surely their reaction on learning their foster daughter was a witch should be pride, or to react as though it was no big deal, one more witch of many? Tamsin was old enough to start being aware of what adults may really be thinking, and she was convinced that the emotion they were displaying was relief. Little does she know, her biological father was a Muggle, and Cassandra and Elliott's relief was due to not having to explain away a non-magical child in their line.

Going off to Hogwarts for the first time was a revelation for Tamsin. Although she went by the name of Tamsin Macnair, and thus certain students responded either with fear or disdain, she found that school accorded her freedom she had never before had in her life. Despite being a disappointment to her family by an almost instantaneous sorting into Hufflepuff (something for which she was later much grateful, having learned of Slytherin's reputation), she really enjoyed herself. For once, she was allowed to fly, instead of watching Quidditch games from the sidelines, and she excelled quickly at this. Although only of an average intelligence, she proved herself to be a model student. She balanced her position on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team with decent grades, and all was well up until the beginning of her 6th year.

In September 1992, at the beginning of her penultimate year, the 16 year old Tamsin was sent back to school by her foster parents with worry in their minds. Whilst at school they had no influence over her life and behaviour, and they were becoming worried at her 'unladylike' behaviour of playing sports with boys and taking less genteel subjects such as COMC. Worried that she would shame the Macnair name, and knowing that she would become of age during the Easter holidays, they informed her of the imminent arrial in Britain of Johann Dolohov, a distant relative of one of Elliott's fellow Death Eaters. A tall, dark and handsome boy of 18 and a recent graduate of Durmstrang, his parents wanted him to make an advantageous marriage with a young English lady. Knowing that if she went home over the Easter holidays that she would most likely be forced to marry into a family whose values she had come to despise, (and not to mention never be allowed the freedom to fly or play Quidditch again), she immediately went to Professor Sprout for help. With the assistance of Professor Dumbledore, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, an emergency court order was granted so that the Macnairs couldn't force Tamsin to go home during the holidays. Finally beginning to feel safe, on her 17th birthday Tamsin's friends celebrated with her in the Hogwarts Great Hall, where she officially renounced her guardians and took the surname Applebee, after her maternal grandmother who had also disowned the Macnairs after the first time they were arrested.

Following her graduation from Hogwarts - with E grade NEWTs in COMC and Charms and A grades in DADA and Potions - she moved in with Elizabeth Applebee in Aspatria, where she had spent her early years. This being in 1994, she spent the next three years as a carer for the elderly lady, keeping her home spick and span and repaying the old woman for her care and respect by doing her best to keep her entertained. The money she did have she would spend on attending Quidditch matches together, and they bonded over following the fortunes of the Wigtown Wanderers, their nearest professional team.

In 1997, as we all know, things changed for the entirety of Wizarding Britain. A former classmate of hers, now at the Ministry of Magic, alerted her that her aunt and uncle had been seen back in the company of suspicious characters and warned her to get out of the country. It was with almost literally hours to spare that Tamsin and Elizabeth got out of the country, using Muggle transportation to head to France under cover. After two days of travel, they arrived in the village near Beauxbatons school, where a local witch managed to get shelter for them. Tamsin spent the year as a part-time English tutor at the school, giving the lessons in return for shelter for herself and her gradmother, receiving news through the wireless about what was happening in her own country.

Personality --
Patronus: Tamsin has never been able to conjure a fully corporeal Patronus, but under the tutelage of an advanced student at Beauxbatons, she has been improving slightly. When she eventually manages, it will be a European Robin.
Boggart: Her aunt and uncle, leading a pack of Death Eaters after them.
Magical Strengths & Weaknesses: Tamsin is an absolute whizz at household spells, and in that sense she makes an excellent housemate. Not only can she get them done quickly, she has nice finishing touches such as being able to get rid of streaks caused by using Scourgify on windows, and folding clothes so that they all fit in the appropriate spaces.
She is less skilled at spells that require a great deal of concentration, such as the Patronus charm, because her somewhat disrupted upbringing prevents her from focusing on the quiet and positive.
Likes | Dislikes: LIKES: Quidditch (especially the Wigtown Wanderers), old people (especially her grandmother), France, posh chocolate, bubble baths.
DISLIKES: Death Eaters (especially her aunt and uncle), bullies, not being able to concentrate, blood pops, boredom.
Fears & Goals: FEARS: That her aunt and uncle won't be punished for her crimes and they will try and take her freedom away again, particularly in the form of a forced marriage.
GOALS: To play Quidditch professionally and to become successful enough to provide for her grandmother.

Tamsin loves the great outdoors and feels most at home outside, although she believes that a house should at least be clean and tidy for the amount of time that one spends at home. As a result she is somewhat fastidious, but she is also massively keen on a party. As such she often has dramatic behavioural swings - from the ambitious Quidditch reserve player spending most of her time training, to the fun-loving, outgoing sort who stays out to the small hours and causes a mess on getting home, to the guilt-tripped home-maker who goes about the place cleaning in fastidious detail.

Her day to day personality is rather endearing, as she is polite and kind, without being overly intrusive in the business of others. However, she is sometimes afraid to do as she must for fear of reprisals. As a result of her changes in behaviour, her friends sometimes worry that she is overdoing the hard work and are trying to convince her to rest more often.

When it comes to men, Tamsin doesn't have a steady boyfriend although she does date. She isn't particularly chaste, either, and enjoys the occasional romance (for this, read 'fling') with an attractive male.

The War --
Affiliation? She did not actively participate in the war, although she desperately hoped that the Death Eaters did not win.
Role played in the second war: None - she spent the time holed up at Beauxbatons school and rarely left the village in which it is located.
Was your character injured in any way, either permanently or temporarily? No, although she found the entire experience very stressful and those who know her well will probably notice this.
Where was your character when Harry Potter won?In the Great Hall of Beauxbatons School, awaiting news of the end of the battle once word had filtered through.
How does your character feel about the end result? Mostly? Complete relief that she can go home so that she and her grandmother can return to a relatively normal life. The relief is so strong that she doesn't even want to think of the possibility of Death Eaters still being out there.
What now for your character? Her aunt and uncle were arrested in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts and are in a secure ward at St Mungo's for assessment, having pleaded that they were under the Imperius curse when they committed their crimes and that the Dark Mark was forced upon them. Tamsin hopes that they will soon be charged with Death Eater activity.
On a personal point of view, she is now due to start her first season as a reserve Chaser for the Wigtown Wanderers, having successfully tried out for a free spot over the summer following the retirement of their legendary top scorer, Daniella Simon. As a result she has reluctantly moved out of the home she shared in Aspatria with her grandmother, and is due to move into a flat with the Caerphilly Caterpults' reserve Keeper, Miles Bletchley [[NB - Julie and I have cleared this and just need to figure out that flat's location.]]. Now that she is closer to her team-mates and to the bright lights of London, she is getting used to a way of life that she never suspected she would be able to have.

Samples --
First Person:

[Private]
I'm not sure why Grandmother gave me one of these. I think she'd heard from one of the Healers at St Mungo's that a lot of people were using them as part of therapy and that's why she thought it would make a good housewarming gift, but as for what I'm supposed to write in the thing... I mean, I'm alright, aren't I?

[Public]
Wake up. Training. Nap. More training. Food. Rest. More training. Home.

They really weren't kidding when they said the new regime was going to be hard work, I think I've found muscles I didn't think I had before.

Third Person:

Tamsin arrived in the nearest Floo grate to her new flat, in the living room of one of the reserve beaters, and shook the soot from her training clothes with a sigh. She knew they were going to be a pain to get clean when she got back to the flat, but all she wanted to do was have a long, undisturbed soak in the bath with no work to do whatsoever.

Making sure everything she had carried with her - her equipment bag and day bag, in addition to her wand holster - had made it safely through the journey, she waved a brief goodbye to the boys and apprated out of their living room with a loud 'crack'.

That was a really rough day, she thought to herself on arriving in her new place, dropping her gear to the floor and having a brief stretch. I really hope I can do this. With a reluctant look at it all, she hauled it all up again and half dragged it to the safety of her bedroom, before flopping backwards onto the bed.

Peace at last.

GENDER -- Female
BIRTHDAY/AGE -- April 23rd 1976, 34
BLOOD STATUS -- Pureblood - at least, that's what she thought.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION -- Heterosexual. The idea of going with another woman just seems a bit... well, she wouldn't be comfortable.

APPEARANCE -- Given that she is a professional sportswoman, Tamsin is somewhat on the short side, standing at a dainty height of 5'3.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES -- Quidditch
personality
TOLERANT Tamsin is of the school of thought that suggests one can do what one likes, provided it doesn't hurt anyone. This also extends to unexpressed thoughts - there might still be the odd Voldemort supporter still around, but as long as they don't express their horrid views or carry out misdeeds, that's the main thing.
NEAT-FREAK Tamsin loves the great outdoors and feels most at home outside, although she believes that a house should at least be clean and tidy for the amount of time that one spends at home. As a result she is somewhat fastidious, but she is also massively keen on a party.
EASILY STRESSED Tamsin often has dramatic behavioural swings - from the ambitious Quidditch reserve player spending most of her time training, to the fun-loving, outgoing sort who stays out to the small hours and causes a mess on getting home, to the guilt-tripped home-maker who goes about the place cleaning in fastidious detail.
LOYAL A typical Hufflepuff, Tamsin is willing to see the good in people, and is loyal to her friends. Her loyalty is often misplaced, but she is usually willing to forgive if people are genuinely sorry for what they've done.
KIND She isn't close to many people, but she will do everything she can for the people she feels deserve it, such as her friends.

LIKES -- Her daughter, Quidditch, old people, France, bubble baths
DISLIKES -- Her aunt and uncle, blood pops, boredom, bullies, a lack of concentration
GOALS -- To make her name in the record books for a positive way before she retires.
FEARS -- That her aunt and uncle will be released from Azakabn, that something will happen to her daughter.
WHAT THEY ARE BEST AT -- She is amazingly tolerant about the less pleasant aspects of being a mum - the sleepless nights, the difficulty in having a social life and the other sacrifices that must be made. She's also damn good at Quidditch, of course, as the Wanderers won the league in 2007.
WHAT THEY ARE WORST AT -- She isn't very good at the relationship thing...
YOUR CHARACTER'S MOTTO, OR A QUOTE THAT YOU FEEL REPRESENTS THEM WELL -- If people don't like you, stuff 'em. If they do horrible things to you, destroy 'em.
First House: Taurus, the nature-loving bull, is a natural sign for Hufflepuffs to be born under. These wizards tend to specialize in herbs and nature spells, also in the husbandry and preservation of magical beasts. Their gentle good natures, open friendliness, hard work, patience, and politeness endear them to most everyone they meet. However, these Hufflepuff Taureans must be careful not to overwork themselves, lest they suffer breakdowns in health. (It has been noticed that Hufflepuffs born under the sign of Taurus swing wildly between overwork and indolence, the lazy periods being used to recharge their energy; they seem to have a problem pacing themselves.) They like their magical workrooms neat and tidy, and prefer peaceful occupations to dangerous or aggressive ones; most Hufflepuffs born under this sign wind up working as hedge witches, village herbalists, and midwives.

Secondary House: These wizards will be less hot headed and apt to charge at windmills than other Gryffindors, for Taurus is an earth sign, and the element of Earth adds a pragmatic streak to even the flightiest of wizards. As with all Taureans, though, if a Gryffindor Taurus is pushed hard enough, she will exhibit a volcanic temper. Gryffindors born under this sign will be exceptionally loyal to their friends, and will have high standards of personal integrity.
appearance
Nationality: British (English)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Build: Nothing out of the ordinary - more slender than average, but not noticeably skinny since she had her daughter.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Brown
Skin: A typically English complexion - not white pale, but prone to pastiness sometimes.
relationships
PARENTS -- Tamsin was raised by her aunt and uncle, Cassandra and Elliot Macnair, until she became a ward of court at 16. She doesn't remember her biological parents due to an Obliviate hex she sustained at a young age, but since their deaths (more on that later) she has since learned their history. Her mother was an Applebee, her aunt's sister, who gave birth to Tamsin as a result of her relationship with a divorced Muggle, two things Cassandra and Elliot did not approve of.
SIBLINGS? No full siblings, but following her aunt and uncle's imprisonment she learned of the existence of her half brother and sister, from her father's first marriage.
MARITAL STATUS/SPOUSE? Miles Bletchley - her daughter's father. They had shared a flat for three years in their twenties and become good friends, even after Tamsin moved back to Cumbria after becoming a starting Chaser for the Wanderers. Her relationship with Miles, the Keeper for the Caerphilly Catapults, was not serious and they are no longer a couple - but in the future, who knows? He is a good father and they have a good co-parenting relationship. Tamsin gets on well with his older daughter, Eleanor, of whom Miles has full custody.
CHILDREN? Millie Elizabeth Applebee-Bletchley, two years old. Her first name was chosen because Tamsin liked it, her middle name came after her grandmother.
OTHER: Elizabeth Anne Applebee, 85 - Tamsin's gran. Her biological parents are Jane Applebee and Michael Knight (see below)
PETS: A black Newfoundland named Nelson. Tamsin often jokes about the dog's lack of intelligence, but she loves him to bits and rather spoils him.

history
When some people say that their family is situation is complicated, they usually mean that one side doesn't speak to the other due to some slight, real or perceived. Tamsin spent the year as a part-time English tutor at the school, giving the lessons in return for shelter for herself and her gradmother, receiving news through the wireless about what was happening in her own country.

Following the end of the war, Tamsin returned to the UK with her gran and had something of an epiphany. With Elizabeth's encouragement, she tried out - albeit later than most - for the Wigtown Wanderers, where she gained a position on their reserve team at the age of 22. For the next couple of years, she shared a flat with Miles Bletchley, a fellow Quidditch reserve as they both worked to secure first team places. Finally, at age 25 and with a starting spot firmly under her belt, Tamsin moved back to Cumbria to be nearer the team, though she kept in touch with her former flatmate.

The interrim years coincided with some good times for Tamsin. Her aunt and uncle were firmly behind bars since their trial in 1998, her career was going well, and in 1999 she finally learned what had become of her family. Her grandmother had always been able to tell Tamsin her mother's name, but the Obliviate curse meant that Tamsin couldn't remember her, so the name meant nothing. There had also been no records of her, due to Elliot's efforts. However, some forensic accounting at the Ministry turned up her mother's will which led to the successful tracing of her biological father's family - to her surprise, he was a Muggle with whom her mother was living at the time of their deaths. Elizabeth Applebee and her daughter were not on speaking terms at the time as she did not approve of the fact that Jane (Tamsin's mother) had known Michael Knight (Tamsin's father) for so little time. A little detective work and she found that she had an older half sister and brother, who both lived in the Yorkshire town of Harrogate. They know and like their little sister, and she is relieved to have them in her life now.

The only other complication between the end of the war and the present day was the birth of Tamsin's daughter, Millie. Somewhat like her mother, Tamsin wasn't overly keen on the idea of marriage, and the fact that her aunt and uncle were the only model of marriage she had in her life as a young woman means that her reluctance to wed is unsurprising. She did, however, enter her 30s with a desire to know what it was like to be a mother. Becoming pregnant by her then boyfriend of seven months - Miles, with whom she had remained close and eventually got together - brought the reality home, hard. He was shocked at first, but agreed to stand by her, no matter her decision. The relationship fell apart fairly quickly, but they are oddly loyal to each other nonetheless and get along well for Millie's sake.

Pregnancy complicated her career, of course, and when she was pushed into revealing her impending motherhood at three months, with the season being about to begin, Tamsin couldn't help but feel a little sad at not being able to play. Her team-mates were supportive, however, and when Millie was born they lobbied the manager to allow the child's great-grandmother to attend training with her as a babysitter, so Tamsin could adapt ASAP to being a working mother.

She is now the team's most experienced Chaser, and team Vice Captain - and couldn't really think on how to improve her life beyond that.
