The First Step on the Path of Destiny
Svalin Thorsdottir stood outside the massive entrance to Lord Odin's (otherwise known as Grandfather) hall. She had been grooming Tryggvi when she had received the summons to appear before Lord Odin within an hour. It was unusual to be summoned like this, or at all for that matter.

What could Lord Odin possibly want? Perhaps it was some sort of quest or maybe it was to help defend the Golden Realm. No matter what it could be, Svalin answered the summons and now stood at the base of the stairs leading up to the entrance to the hall.

She'd never admit it of course, but she was a little nervous.

Halbjorn arrived not long thereafter, still dirty, his hands bloodied from a successful hunt and the field dressing thereafter, and, as usual, wearing just his breeches and bearskin cloak. It wasn't that he lacked respect for his grandfather, just the opposite, but he just rarely stood... or even understood social niceties.
Still, on seeing his half-sister, he grins wide and waves cheerily. "Well met, Svalin. The day finds thee well? Knowst what this summons wast about? The vizier didst call me in from afield."

Asleif was the next to arrive, looking as immaculate as always. Let her siblings dirty themselves with adventures; she was above such petty concerns.

"Honestly, brother," she said as she approached. "You could not even clean yourself before coming? I do believe I could smell you a league away."

"For the meadhall and wenching, aye, tis things to bathe for. But grandfather ist a lord of the wild places and warriors as well. Ist there not glory and accomplishment in the hunt? Ist not the first thing he always asks o'er, when he designs visit, how goes the ways of war and the hunt? Ne'er hath I heard him enquire whether the children art well bathed, nor shown concern for well trimmed nails, else thou wouldst surely be grand vizier already."

The look she gave Halbjorn could well have stripped paint from walls.

"Grandfather doth understand that mine pursuits lie in a different direction," she said. "And doth well inquire after mine studies."

Even though it was quite likely that the All-Father already well knew the answer to that. He was not Omnipotent Odin without cause and she had long suspected he kept more careful eye upon her than her siblings.

"Well met, brother. Well met, sister," Svalin said with a nod to each.

"Grandfather cares not how we look, only that we uphold the honor and glory of the Golden Realm."

"Doth either of thee knowest the reason for the summons?" Svalin looked around. "And where ist Aridis?" At times it was hard to tell which of the four siblings were twins. Svalin and Halbjorn had more in common with each other than Svalin had with her twin Aridis. The same could be said for Halbjorn and Asleif.

Asleif shook her head.

"I know not," she said. "I am not her keeper." As if she'd want to spend her time keeping track of the little hellion.

"As for the summons? Who can fathom the will of our grandfather?"

Methinks the sun offends her, with the hours she keeps, but all the bartenders know her well."

"Hail, brother, hail my sisters," Aridis greets as she comes upon them. Her dog is at her heels as the pair make their way over.

Like normal Aridis is in high spirits when she is around them. She won't mention her latest tryst since it would bore them or embarrass them. "My apologies to thee. I was hunting for birds for their feather. Doth thou know the best place brother? I need to make new arrows for myself."

"Well met, sister mine," Svalin said to her twin. "Grandfather ist waiting for us." Always to the point and never one to waste time with words Svalin was.

Halbjorn falls somewhere between his half-sisters, all for the glory of Asgard and victory... and yet, all for the mead and song that comes from said victories. Likewise, hunting remained a passion he shared with Aridis. Really, its just his twin he has nothing in common with.
"Hail Aridis... and aye, methinks I know some places thou mayst find new fletching and sport whilst at it. Whate'er grandfather wants, we shalt then be afield and to the hunt thereafter."

Other than blood, Asleif shared precious little in common with her siblings. The glory of Asgard, well, that was secondary to the glory of herself. Even magics, which she shared some with her sisters, were not truly something in common, not when her own abilities far outstripped theirs.

It was little wonder there were those among the gods who questioned whether or not she was truly a daughter of Thor.

"Hail, sister," she said, sparing the dog a look which suggested it had best not come anywhere near her.

"Let us not keep him waiting then."

Svalin entered the great hall a step in front of her siblings. Nothing seemed different from normal and it made Svalin wonder why they had been summoned. Her father and two mothers stood next to the throne along with her grandmother.

She approached the throne where her grandfather, Odin the All Father, sat. Svalin stopped in front of it and immediately kneeled on one knee.

Halbjorn isn't far behind, settling onto one knee, head bowed, the usually boisterous warrior silent in respect to the line of Asgardian royalty before him.

Aridis is right behind her brother. Her head bends low as a sign of undying fealty to the All Father.

She doesn't find it uncomfortable to kneel on one knee as she waits for her grandfather to speak. To her showing respect is never tiring.

Let it never be said that Asleif is completely without respect for her elders. She too bows, head kept low. There might, perhaps, be just the littlest bit of waiting, as though letting the others go first, but that is all.

Svalin rose and listened to what her grandfather had to say. Migard? Why Migard? Each of them still had training to see to here in Asgard.

She tilted her head in thought. "Lord Odin," she said very respectfully. "What ist the purpose of this trip to Migard? Doth not Asgard have need of us to help defend the place of our birth from those who wouldst see it destroyed?"

Aridis would be sad to go so far from the places she knows so well but she will prepare herself quickly once they are dismissed. Deep down the idea of going to Midgard scares her since she is well aware of how much power she has compared to the people there.

Would she become a terrible thing of their nightmares? She hopes not. It would be better to be called a hero.

This? This is awesome. Frost giants and trolls are entertaining and all, but everyone has killed a giant or three. But foes like the Absorbing Man, Goliath, Count Nefaria... now that's the stuff big stories are made of that few others can match.
Halbjorn has never benn one for hiding his emotions, so his joy with this pronouncement shows immediately.
"I need but select arms for the trip, and I am ready, Grandfather."

This is going to be fun.

Asleif's eyes widen in disbelief. She simply cannot have heard what she thinks she has just heard. Tis some jest! Grandfather cannot possibly think to consign us to that mudball of a world! Yes, yes, tis some grand jest...

"Midgard?" she manages, after a moment. "All... four of us?"

"Just think, sister, what adventures we shalt find! The tales of father's exploits there art the stuff of legend, and now we mayst find such adventure ourselves. Surely this shalt lead to grand tales indeed."
Exactly why Halbjorn always seems to think his sister will suddenly come to her senses and appreciate these things remains a mystery, even to Asgard's greatest diviners.
Nonetheless, hope springs eternal.

Svalin bowed deeply. "Thy will shall be done, Lord Odin. We will not bring shame upon thy name or the Realm Eternal." Svalin was always one for formalities. She never called him Grandfather in public and always made sure proper etiquette was followed.

"Aye, thy will be done," Aridis echoes. At least she didn't have to pick sides here since there was no real side. It was just doing as the All Father wishes and the new possible adventures they could find.

That was something to look forward to.

"Will our father's friends on Midgard be expecting our arrival, my lord?" She didn't want their first meeting to end in astonishment. While they were truly fantastic she did not wish to be seen as intimidating.

It only took a short while to gather the necessary items and be transported to Migard. Svalin would have thought they would have been put down in New York, close to their father's friends the Avengers, but this didn't look like New York. They were standing in the middle of a field of grain.

Tryggvi pawed the ground nervously and Svalin put a hand on his neck to study him. "Methinks this ist not New York of Father's stories."

Halbjorn looks around, looking almost disappointed. Of course, his disappointment is more likely to be because a horde of supervillains weren't there to meet them.

"Nay... I do not recall the tales of New York having so much..." he crouches down, examining the field closer. "Wheat. Lots of wheat."

Somehow, great stories never mention fields of wheat.

"New York?" A figure steps towards them, regarding them through round darkened glasses. "My friends, you are quite a ways from New York. You are in the part of the world the mortals call 'Oklahoma.'"

"Well then good Sir Amane, we shall place our good faith in thine hands." Aridis was decked out in her best gear for the trip and her hound looked freshly groomed.

Asleif would rather be just about anywhere, up to and possibly including Aunt Hel's realm. Midgard. Bah. Who needed the mortal realm when the other worlds of Asgard were so much more interesting? And cleaner.

But she will follow for now, at least. This looked to be a truly dreadful place to get stuck in.
