Fanmix: Dared and Done
Medium: Theatre
Fandom: The Barretts of Wimpole Street
Subject: Elizabeth Barrett Browning/Robert Browning
Title: Dared and Done
Warnings: Um. I make fanmixes about nineteenth-century poets?
Notes: Loosely based on The Barretts of Wimpole Street, with expansion into their later lives. What can I say, I find these two adorable, especially because, quite apart from their personal lives, Robert Browning was a huge ridiculous fangirl of Elizabeth's work and didn't care who knew it.

Theme For a Pretty Girl Who Makes You Believe God Exists, The Eels
[instrumental]
A nice little opening instrumental; their first meeting, mutual fangirling, and adorableness.

When the Day Met the Night, Panic At the Disco
Well he was just hanging around
Then he fell in love
And he didn't know how
But he couldn't get out
Just hanging around
Then he fell in love

Robert Browning was not expecting this. Neither was Elizabeth Barrett.

Song For A Winter's Night, Sarah McLachlan and Jewel
The lamp is burning low upon my tabletop; the snow is softly falling
The air is still within the silence of my room; I hear your voice softly calling
If I could only have you near to breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love on this winter night with you

Elizabeth is a little bit in denial, but she recognizes that she likes him, and loves being around him, and that he's good for her, this hurricane that's burst in on her solitude.

That's All, Michael Bublé
I can only give you love that lasts forever,
And a promise to be near each time you call.
And the only heart I own
For you and you alone
That's all, that's all...

Robert, on the other hand, believes denial is for wimps.

Sing You A Love Song, Of Montreal
Before the laughter and the cheer disolves into his memory,
Taste of vodka on his lips, and thoughts of murder and doom,
Her eyes appeared to bloom,
He wanted to touch them but was afraid she taken aback
Then what would he say

Subsequent meetings: Robert attempts to convince Elizabeth that he really really means this, no really, whilst Elizabeth remains skeptical.

Head Over Heels, Yiruma
[instrumental]
Elizabeth stops being in denial. And says so.

Corner of Your Heart, Ingrid Michaelson
There's a corner of your heart for me.
There's a corner of your heart just for me.
I will pack my bags just to stay in the corner of your heart.
Just to stay in the corner of your heart.

Robert's willing to give up everything for her, and she for him. So they elope. Because who needs Mr. Barrett, anyway?

How Do I Love Thee? The Merry Wives of Windsor
How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways...

Elizabeth's famous Sonnets from the Portugese. Their married life together.

Soon, Love, Soon, Vienna Teng
(Soon love soon)
We will find illumination in unnatural light
(Soon love soon)
You will travel a thousand miles without leaving my sight

Elizabeth is dying, and she knows it, but she had Robert for fifteen years, and that was all she ever wanted.

Magic, Ben Folds Five
Stars in your eyes
Free from the life that you knew
You're the magic that holds the sky up from the ground
You're the breath that blows these cool winds 'round
Trading places with an angel now

Robert Browning never remarried.

This is so freaking COOL. Historical OTPs, FTW!

I adore your fanmixes. They're always a perfect blend of songs I already adore and brilliant little discoveries. Can't wait to listen to this one.

Historical OTPs FOREVER. I'm working on a John and Abigail Adams one too. *shifty eyes* I hope you enjoy this one as much as the rest!

I honestly couldn't love you anymore if I TRIED. The Brownings are hands-down my historical OTP - I love their poetry, especially Elizabeth's, and devour any biographical information I can get my hands on. I actually wrote my final paper in women's lit on their courtship and how it played into Elizabeth's writing. Also, my favorite bio of them is entitled "Dared and Done," so...bonus points for that. And I agree with Robert being a total fanboy. Have you read his first letter to her? All ditzing out over the fact that she name-dropped him in one her poems (Lady Geraldine's Courtship). Too adorable for words. Anyway, basically, I love you and I love them, and this is magic.

YAY! I made somebody's day! Also, I love the phrase "ditzing out" like you wouldn't believe and am going to steal it.

I um. May have stolen the title of this mix from that biography. I'm not 100% sure because it's been a while since I read it, but it's possible. Anyway. You're not alone: I wrote my final paper in 19th Century Women on the Brownings, the Barretts of Wimpole Street, and companionate marriage and then decided I wanted to make a fanmix SO HERE IT IS. I'm so glad it made someone else as geekily happy as it made me!
